How can we protest Changing the FRA for future generations. We need to protest these changes, as our children and grandchildren need us to stand up for them now.
How about if they cut SS they should cut all government workers the same amount. We don't need half of them, way too many over paid Chiefs and not enough of them giving a full 8 hours work. If the government workers were as a public company they would have been out of Business years ago.
There is no "your" money like an individual retirement account. Social Security is a pay-as-you-go system where current workers pay taxes for the retirement benefits of current Social Security recipients. Thus it is an entitlement program subject to the whim of politicians. We are down to three workers for each retiree compared to thirty workers for each retiree. Sooner or later you run out of other people's money.

Social Security has certainly diminished their customer service. I tried for 2 hours to get in touch with a representative and never did get any answers. This is a disgrace.
Don’t believe what they tell you. They told me wrong until I got someone higher up. They were telling me I could not get Medicare part B because I got my Medicare part A only and kept working after 65 using my federal Blue Cross which was primary except hospital cost When I retired at 71 they told me no I could not get it. Two told me this. Finally I got some one higher up that knew I was right. I got Medicare Part B the same month I retired at 71. Many working there are not well trained and should not give out bad advice.

Don't blame it on Ukraine. The problem is and always has been the gradual decrease on the percentage of income the wealthy pay. In my lifetime there was a time when the wealthy paid more than 50% of their income on federal tax. Not really sure what they pay now. But I do know that there are so many tax shelters and breaks that I've seen happen in my life and it's infuriating to see the effect on average Americans. While you're at it, don't blame it on welfare or SNAP recipients because you'd really be surprised how little they receive. I know we all admire a self made millionaire story. But the percentage of their income which is taxed is much lower than a middle class couple. And that also infuriates me.

My solution is to cut Senate and House pay as well as payroll in government agencies. Cut benefits for illegals. Cut snap for those over 300 lbs. Cut government period.
Only legal residents may collect benefits... Social Security can only be paid for those who WORKED and PAID into ssa. Even Supplemental Security Income benefits may only be paid to elderly or disabled legal residents.
The United states Government is a Disgrace to the people, i am just glad i have already locked my benefits in early, i will just have to learn to live the rest of my life on what i get, it is enough to survive, but barely, at least i am not living off the welfare program, that would make me sick if i had to do that, i earned my SS retirement money and am dam proud to say that.
I worked my ass off and paid into the system as long as I could but I became disabled at the age of 45 so I did not get the benefit of the maximum Social Security benefit. I am only getting a total of $960 split between Social Security disability and SSI and it is definitely not enough to survive! I need a raise .. no one should be living underneath the positive level on less than minimum wage!

Some seniors are barely getting by. Cut their pay 13% and they're in real trouble. If you get $1,000 a month, that'll cut your check $130 per month. With insurance and utilities rates soaring, many will be in serious trouble.
True. But did you know that when the program was first started life expectancy was 64. Retirement age was set at 65. Let that sink in. They did not intend for a fair share of the population recipients to live long enough to collect much if any. If they started the program today full retirement would be set at 78. So to take our eyes off the looming short fall they decided to magnanimously passed legislation allowing for IRAs, 401k and similar plans to encourage people to save money. I don’t recall if they set up a separate federal employee retirement plan at that time, or if it came later. I believe that plan is more generous than SS.

Project 2025 authors have endorsed and supported plans to cut Social Security by raising the retirement age, and their ideas can be found in the two most recent budget proposals put forth by conservative U.S. House Republicans - both of which sought to increase the Social Security retirement age from 67 to 69.

The taxation of social security benefits is one of the most egregious parts of the tax law. The $25,000 (single) and $32,000 (married) income thresholds where taxation starts has never changed since taxation started in 1984 or so. Inflation-adjusted that would be $75,000+ and 96,000+ respectively in today’s dollars. If they don’t eliminate taxation on SSB’s entirely, it should at least be indexed to inflation each year.
I doubt the income tax raised by taxing social security has been used to save Medicare or social security funds. Probably just went into the general fund.
Total agree with raising the cut off earnings for taxable social security. . And the max percentage should be only 50%. We already paid taxes on the employee side of the social security contributions when we paid them! They always seem to figure out ways to reduce benefits or claim back a portion your earned benefit. These changes, and rate hikes happened in the 80s. I was in my early 20s. As a post 1954 boomer, we’re were hit by the rampant inflation of the late 70s & 80s, when we entered the workforce and struggled with near poverty just paying rent and groceries, let alone, trying to buy a house. The point being, who at that age and condition was thinking about retirement?
If you don't know about Proyect 2025 they will cut your Social Security payment. You pay Federal Tax on Social Security (up to 85% can be taxed) depending on how much you make. You do not pay FICA tax on Social Security Earnings. So none of the tax on social security flows to the FICA trust. (which is a myth because Congress will not leave the funds in a trust they spend it)

Totally agree Dr Weir. As mentioned in a previous comment, with triple attack of the 13.7% decrease related to the FRA age change, the lack of colas keeping up with true costs, and the taxing of 50% to 85% of social security due to the income limit still back at 1983 levels. With these three items, I figure at least a 25% drop in social security check purchasing power compared to my parents, grandparents. Another issue is with the raise of minuimum wages. Used to be a Social security check was roughly equal to a minimum wage job. Now with minimum wage doubling, and social security checks no increasing proportionally. Recipients of social security checks are harmed. Prices around them got up and up. Such that a social security check is worth less than half of a minimum wage job. Can you do a video post discussing this disparity? Thanks. It’s no wonder retirees are having a hard time living on their checks. Capitalistic society simply isn’t built so everyone has abundant 401k balances. Their will always be the top tier population and by normal distribution, there will always be the bottom tier population Sad but true.

Many seniors already are dead before ever drawing one cent of their benefits. Many More will be DEAD before retiring if these Trump Republican con men get their way. Harris said the Rich Must Pay their fair share as workers have for years! Warren Buffet said the Rich MUST pay their share and when they do SS will be sound for the next 100 years without raising the RETIREMENT age to the DEAD AGE. I want a President who knows the truth! Not a President who holds the record for the most LYING fact checked President in our history! We need a cleansing of Trump Republicans who want to stick it to the elderly and the working class. Then these SAME TRUMP Republicans blame Ukraine, Workers living too long, Immigrants, and anything else they can throw at us as a smoke screen to keep us from seeing the REAL TRUTH!
I just started getting SS this past September. Once they automatically take my Medicare payment out, and I pay my RX co-pays… my monthly check doesn’t even come close to a supplemental income. The only reason I’m not that worried is based on my family’s history I most likely don’t have a long life expectancy. The golden years suck!
What do you think is happening to the current workers paying for your benefits? More of their income is subject to FICA r=taxes and they did not receive the same COLA increases in their jobs and they also have increases in health care costs.
@@williamrogers1219 Is this a serious question? I stated working at age 15 years old until I was 66 years, and 6 months, and had the maximum income taken out to pay for my SS benefits. During that time the laws changed and I also had to wait longer for full retirement age. I paid into SS which went to the previous generation so they could collect, and now when I qualify someone is asking me about the coverage for the younger working generation’s future benefits. Unlike a large % of people young, and old I knew SS was just supplement income for retirement, so I gave up a lot of things to save while many others blow their money to have fun. People need to be more fiscally responsible, and get involved in politics if they are concerned about their future benefits.
@@williamrogers1219 No one is paying for my benefits. I worked for over 40 yrs and contributed the maximum amount to SS until Full retirement age, which was increased so that there would be money for the previous generation. Unlike so many, I also made a lot of sacrifices over the years to save money knowing full well that SS was only supplement income, while I watched people of all ages burn through their money so they could have fun. I think the current generation is well aware of the problems with SS so they should start saving little by little investing, and also become more active in politics. Just a little advice…don’t tell a senior citizen that has worked their entire life since they were a teenager, and paid towards SS that someone else is paying for their benefits…it just makes you sound bitter, and ignorant.
I did a google search and I found if the tax cap was removed completely only 5% wage earners would be affected yet by removing the tax cap it would maintain social security benefits intact for decades.
Born in 1953. Had been designated disabled, but when my husband passed away in 2016, benefits changed to spousal. I have no other income, but a small pension he had.
The income tax on SS benefits was originally designed to affect only high earners, but it was not indexed for inflation and now affects very average individuals. It needs to be eliminated or at least indexed to inflation going backward to when it was originated. The best way to keep SS solvent is charge the FICA on ALL earned income and to non-earned income such as capital gains and tax shelter income over the median for all individuals and index that for inflation. It may be hard to to figure it out, but it might even be possible then to lower the tax rate.

How can you call something a cut that you have not even received? In government speak, cuts are defined as reductions in desired increases in the federal budget, instead of an agency getting a 10% increase in their budget they got last year, and this year they only get a 5% increase, their budget was cut in their definition.
@clagueb3686 Raise the cap. This means those making over $400,000 also have that income taxed for FICA. This is the democrat proposal. Republicans want smaller government. That always means decreasing or eliminating benefits, agencies and programs. Their plan is to allow corporate America to manage Social Security, Medicare and the US postal service, to name just a few. We can see these changes already with Medicare Advantage plans frustrating consumers and the significant negative changes to the post office since DeJoy was installed.
Raise the cap. It’s ridiculous to have it capped at 160k. If the wealthiest people pay their share we will be fine. Guess who lives longer? Yep it’s higher income recipients.

In the United States we are allowed to retire at the age of 62 but we are not allowed access to Medicare or Medicade until the age of 65. At what point in time is this issue going to be addressed?
The politicians, who took money out of social security, don't want to pay back social security, therefore, the social security recipients pay the price.
Or, or, or if the current work force were to have earnings inflation adjusted to 1990s equivalent their FICA withholdings would be more supportive of the COLA adjusted SS benefits. I realize worker pay is a private sector issue that isn’t a legislative issue EXCEPT if Federal Minimum Wage was inflation adjusted to catch up with losses since the 90s it would indirectly cause push ups in higher level jobs.

I am confused. If you are born before 1960 (e.g. 1956) your FRA is 66 and 4 months but you start collecting SS at 70, what happens? And if you continue to work till 72, what happens?
Let me tell you something about COLA. Let's say we are due for a 10% increase. When they raise your wage, they also raise your medicare premium which usually cuts your raise in half. That's correct. 10% becomes 5%
Some companies file bankruptcy and long time workers lose their retirement. The only money they have is social security and a small amount from the government Pension benefit guarantor corporation. How can people live and have health care. Most people never earned enough to save.
I turned 65 this year, and planned to work 5 more years. Now I got laid off , had severance pay for 6 weeks ,Now I applied for unemployment, the max amt won’t even cover my mortgage - can I take social security too or should I wait ? While I look for work ( I’m divorced and have no other income ) I dont want to lose my home😮

I took my SS at 62. My husband passed and I receive survivor benefits from his account. I was not told I would lose 30% if he were to die and had more benefits. When I later asked about this I was told SSA does not give financial advice. I believe that would have been info so that I could have made an informed decision.
I will be 65 in March 2025. I need the insurance.Will be applying this Dec 2024. I also plan to continue working until my wheels fall off. I make $39,000 a year. I can't live off ss alone. I have been trying to find out why for the past 3 months I have not gotten my usual amount of $1051.00. I've gotten $701.00 , $825.00 and last time it was $876.00. I don't know why. This didn't cover my bills. I had to park my little truck due to no insurance. I live about 25 miles from the Walmart. I also didn't get any notice that this would happen. I'm on SSDI less than 1,000 a month and struggling. I started working at 16 a public job and worked until mid 30's and have never thought my benefits went along with my work credits. I didn't file hoping to get better so I could go back to work but unfortunately my health continued to decline as it still does. Does this cut effect me or the cost of living raise? I'm struggling surviving as it is supporting two on my income which causes going without our needs.
No. It's not money that will be taken away from what you are already receiving. It's 6.5% that will be taken away for every year they raise the SS eligibility ages. Not to get political, but the truth must be heard. One party wants to raise these eligibility ages. So that doesn't happen. Vote Blue🇺🇲
