Let's put it to the test and gauge artist by artist, year by year, and see what we get. We're starting with the first 5 years of the 90's because.... WHEW do we have a lot of material for this.

The Grammy Award for Best New Artist has been awarded since the 2nd Annual Grammy Awards in 1960.[1] Years reflect the year in which the Grammy Awards were handed out, for records released in the previous year. The award was not presented in 1967. The official guidelines are as follows: "For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist." Note that this is not necessarily the first album released by an artist; for example, Shelby Lynne won the award in 2001 after having already released six albums over 13 years.[2]
The Best New Artist award has a reputation for being given to artists whose music industry success ends up being short-lived; it is sometimes asserted, with varying degrees of sincerity, that the award itself brings a curse.[3][4] This viewpoint was expressed by former Starland Vocal Band member Taffy Danoff in a 2002 interview for VH1's 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders: "We got two of the five Grammys - one was Best New Artist. So that was basically the kiss of death and I feel sorry for everyone who's gotten it since."[5]
The category is also notable for being the only category in which a Grammy Award was vacated; this occurred in 1990 after it was revealed that winners Milli Vanilli did not contribute their own vocals on their album, Girl You Know It's True.[6] The award was not then given to another artist.[7]

Thing is with Milli Vanilli - in Europe we'd been doing the whole "session singer or sample for vocals, put a pretty model out front to pretend to sing it" for years before and continued to do so afterwards. Most europop and eurodances acts were like this, especially in the 80s and 90s. We Euro-folks were over here wondering what you Americans were making such a fuss about. The big question is how they won Best New Artist in the first place. Their songs were crap. However, don't be talking no smack about Neneh Cherry, "Buffalo Stance" is a banger.

I never got it either, and im american. thats what dance records were back then, and not just european ones. a lot of latin freestyle songs, for example, changed out session vocalists. in the 1960s, it was also pretty common in american pop music with all those vocal groups. sometimes a song would be credited to a completely different group than who performed it.

I'm guessing why Milli Vanilli got the shit they did is because no one in America really attempted such a trick before. Most American "fake bands" before 1989 like The Monkees and The Partridge Family at least had the actual people playing and singing music. Milli Vanilli was trying something bold for Americans, and it failed when they were found out

So to add what you said about the 1993 award, as Todd in the Shadow pointed out in his Trainwreckord episode on Zingalamaduni: what's probably most unfortunate with Arrested Development's particular getting cursed is that they were a group out of Atlanta, Georgia, a city now known for being the center of southern hip hop. Not only did the love for their debut record disappear, their initial landmark achievement of putting the ATL on the map went with it. Outside of any sources talking about the group or their lead, Speech, directly, the history of the 90s hip hop scene has been rewritten to pretty much remove all mention of them or their impact on rap, Outkast is now being given credit for getting Atlanta known.

Rob and Fab really got a raw deal. That album they made with their real voices is actually fantastic, and had it not been for the controversy, I think it could've been a big hit. Imo it proved that all they needed was a little more time for vocal lessons and practice in order to hit their full potential. I wish retellings of the Milli Vanilli story didn't constantly treat it like an afterthought.

I was thinking the same. It's About Time is one of the most lauded albums from that era in R&B at least. "Weak" is a song that seems to never disappear. Yes, they were not as notable but I am thinking label politics are the only reason that they didn't fully break through. "Anything", "You're Always On My Mind", and "Weak" speak for themselves and are way bigger indicators of why they were there. My personal favorite from their debut is "It's About Time" . And at that, Toni's self-titled album was a great project as well. "Spending My Time With You", "Another Sad Love Song", "Love Shoulda Brought You Home"., and the original "How Many Ways" are some great songs. I do agree with it being a safe choice to a degree though.

Milli Vanilli's big album, GIRL YOU KNOW IT'S TRUE, is actually pretty enjoyable if you accept it for what it is: pure, uncut Europop designed in a lab to be fun. Music critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote an excellent review of the album, and this sums it up pretty well: "Anytime Milli Vanilli had to be before the cameras, there they were, since producer/songwriter/musician/all-around mastermind and mad genius Frank Farian knew damn well that nobody would want to buy the record after seeing him or the middle-aged studio vocalists that sang on the records. So, he did what any self-respecting Euro-dance producer would do - made his record the best he could, then got somebody to act as frontman. Farian wasn't doing something unprecedented here, since there have been many acts throughout Europop history that either didn't sing or didn't sing well - they were just figureheads. The problem is, he did this at a time when acts were more visible than they ever were [due to MTV]... "As soon as the news spread, America was shocked - shocked, I tell you, shocked! - that those pretty German boys weren't actually soulfully singing in flawless English on those impeccably constructed dance tracks, and immediately shunned the duo, burning the records in some cases. Which is sort of like gazing longingly at a Playboy centerfold and then being so horrified when you learn the photo is airbrushed, you lose all interest in sex. The fact is, with dance-pop (especially Euro-dance!), just like Playboy, artificiality is the name of the game, and that's what is good about it. It's the distinguishing characteristic, its identity, the core of its being. On that level, it's hard not to listen to GIRL YOU KNOW IT'S TRUE and marvel at the level of Farian's studiocraft, since it doesn't even sound like he programmed a computer to make this music; it sounds like something the machine wrote on its own accord..."

I think that's the funny thing about europop, especially Eurodance is how easy it was for many DJ's to have breakout hits but couldn't follow the traditional model for what an artist was (at least at the time). Now a days people like David Guetta, Daft Punk, Calvin Harris, and so forth can enjoy having a massive career and being able to perform their hits to millions of people, but back then it was such a novelty idea for a DJ let alone a producer to be considered an artist. I think that's the loophole a lot of them used, having a model to be the star is no different to what Gorillaz would do with their animation band. But for the average person they couldn't care less, most of europop to them (excluding ABBA) was middle of the road bubblegum pop that was easy to ignore despite how massive they were. OF COURSE and I'm laughing as I type this, but BOY hindsight is our friend ,because the entire late 90s, and early 2000s pop scene would be defined by europop, and even the past 20 plus years of pop music has been shaped by it ESPECIALLY in dance music. God it's weird to say but Mili Vanilli could had worked in this day of age more than they did back then because now people don't care how their getting the music. I mean now you really could have a act that is just a front for the real band so in a way I feel bad for Mili Vanili because even though in Europe it was normal to have models pretend to be the singers, and have session singers to do all of the work (though I guess for a europop act Milli Vanilli was bad but still), Americans were PISSED about it. But I mean to be fair we let Paula Abdul and Jennifer Lopez slide as well so honestly....on behalf of the hindsight police I want to issue an apology to Milli Vanilli for how they were treated by the American media.

Well, who could hear that voice and not immediately understand? Also, Mariah was all of 19 or 20 at the time, so there's that too. It just made sense from nearly every angle. Add in Tommy Mottola steering things in the background and there's no way she wasn't going to win, but even without him pulling every string known to man, she genuinely deserved it. It's one of the few instances where a black female artist DIDN'T get shafted by the Grammys.

@@scottlarson1548- People were so naïve back in those days that they didn’t even know Freddie Mercury was gay. As for lip syncing, most people can’t tell even today when someone is lip-syncing. They don’t seem to realize it’s the exact same version they’ve heard on the radio. I guess some people’s brains just don’t process the details of songs in that way. It’s easy to tell for those of us who really pay close attention to music. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen Stevie Nicks doing Solid Gold, but she’s one of the few singers that didn’t lip-sync. They appeared as Milli Vanilli, promoting the Milli Vanilli Do-It-Yourself Kit, where you get to be Milli Vanilli. Complete with language tapes, mop heads, terrible outfits, and basic, terrible dances to do at the nightclub.

This reminds me of a livestream/podcast series I used to listen to back when it ran by the animation reviewer PieGuyRulz called The Award Show Audit, where he looked at the nominations for the Emmy for best half-hour (and hour-long) animated program. Historical lookbacks of media like this have always really interested me because you get to compare the content that got this kind of recognition to other stuff that was out at the time and stuff that's remembered more today. Especially with how definitive of a moment a time like the early 90's was for pop culture.

Lots of genuine surprises and laugh-out-loud moments! I'll try to restrain myself for looking up the nominees and winners for the subsequent vid. Also I knew Vision of Love was Mariah's first song, but I would've sworn the other hits on that album (like Someday) was from her subsequent album Emotions. And after seeing Mariah Carey snubbed for so many years, I kinda would like to see your opinions on big artists who've never won or even been nominated.

I was five years old when that first album dropped and even before Emotions her music was all over the radio. Recently “I Don’t Wanna Cry” was stuck in my head and I bought her first album and it certainly does sound like 1990 but in a charmingly dated way. Also I’m not a soccer mom!!!

You’re right about Mariah Carey’s self titled not being very well remembered, but she topped the billboard top 200 albums for 11 weeks and had 4 number 1 singles off of it. I think 1990 just wasn’t a memorable year; not that it wasn’t a very successful album.

Considering how many current artists use backing tracks/lip sync during performances, I say we give Milli Vanilli their awards back. Although I suppose that wouldn’t help Rob Pilatus these days. For the record I’m more of a hard rock/metal guy so, I’m not saying this because I’m a Milli Vanilli fan, more just because of how “common” that sort of thing happens these days. At least as far as the tape screw up goes “Girl You Know It’s… Girl You Know It’s… Girl You Know It’s…”
