The worst thing is... the pill can actually stop menstruation completely, but obgyns decided to not do that and add placebo pills so women still experience the joy of periods. Some brands are "extended" and will only include placebos every 3 months, and a few have existed which don't use placebos at all and were sometimes branded "continuous". From my understanding these are mostly prescribed to women with problematic menstrual symptoms e.g. endo or debilitating period cramps (dysmenorrhea).

To be honest I think every guy should learn about stuff like this. Its natural body functions, but it is importent to know what your partner is going through when she has her period, and why it can be such a problem for women with heavy flows (though that isnt really touched on here).
