An ultra rare Curtis P-36C "Hawk" was featured at the Planes of Fame Air Show 2015. This is one of two flying P-36 Hawk's in the world and this video is the first time cameras have been mounted on the outside of the aircraft during flight.
So come along with Steve Hinton as he fly's the P-36 in formation with another unique flying aircraft, the Seversky AT-12 "Guardsmen" from the Planes of Fame collection during the Missing Man Flight segment of the air show. AT-12 piloted by Johnny Maloney.
Only at Planes of Fame can you witness such a rare flight as this flight which also includes the worlds only flying P-38J, flown by Chris Fahey and one of two flying P-47G "Razorback "Thunderbolts" flown by Kevin Eldridge.

I absolutely love the Classic pre-war P-36 Curtiss Hawk. It is an unjustly maligned fighter for many people's personal points of view not for its capabilities. let's compare 1941 stats; The A6M2 type "O" model 21: loaded weight 6162 lbs. Nakajima 14-cylinder 980 hp. radial Max speed: 346 mph, Range: 1939 miles, Service ceiling: 32,810 ft., Rate of climb: 3,100 ft./min, Wing loading: 22.0 lb./ft² ., Power/mass: 0.18 hp./lb., Weapons: Two 7.7mm cowl Mg's and Two 20mm cannons in wings. The P-36A: Loaded weight 5650 lbs., Pratt & Whitney R-1830-17 Twin Wasp radial 1,050 hp., Max speed: 313 mph, Range: 625 miles, Service ceiling: 32,700 ft., Rate of climb: 3,400 ft./min, Wing loading: 23.9 lb./ft² , Power/mass: 0.18 hp./lb. Weapons: one Browning .30 cal. / one browning .50. cal. in Cowl. One Browning .30 cal. in each wing. The two aircraft outside of the A6M2 better range/armament were virtually equal in a dogfight. The P-36A had better rate of climb and far better split flap/ailerons allowing for a faster roll-rate at either high, or low speed. According to former Japanese Zero pilots The A6M2 had inordinately long ailerons which were great at low-speed maneuvering, but very hard to move at higher speeds. The only combat by U.S.-operated P-36s took place during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor Dec 7th, 1941. Five of the 39 total P-36A Hawks at Pearl Harbor, delivered previously by the USS Enterprise in Feb, were able to take off during the attack and were credited with shooting down two Japanese Mitsubishi A6M2 Zeros for the loss of one P-36 to friendly ground fire. Models used by the French and Finnish Air Forces had Six 7.5mm FN/Browning MGs were used to murderous effect against both the Germans and Russians. I believe had the P36 started life with the then proposed super charged 1200 hp. R-1830 engine, Four Browning .50 cal. MG's, and the bubble top canopy and redesigned tail section like the razor-backed P-51 Mustangs and P-47 Thunderbolts got (think XP40Q-2A) it would have had a much longer service life with the U.S. forces.

"The Finnish Hawks were initially armed with either four or six 7.5mm machine guns." ... "From 1942, the State Aircraft Factory replaced the fuselage machine guns with either one or two .50 in (12.7 mm) Colt machine guns and installed two or four .303 in (7.7 mm) Browning machine guns in each wing. The 12.7mm Berezin UB or LKk/42 heavy machine guns were also used.[10] The installation of heavier armament did not change the very good flying characteristics of the fighter, but the armament was much more effective against Soviet aircraft. The Finnish Hawks were also equipped with Revi 3D or C/12D gunsight." www.wikiwand.com/en/Curtiss_P-36_Hawk#/Finland

There were never more than two mg's per wing in the Finnish Hawks, according to Keski-Suomen ilmailumuseo.

What a beautiful example of 1930's fighter aircraft design, flown by the man, the legend, who has been the envy of all of us, who have looked skyward with the desire to fly! Thank you Steve Hinton and the Planes of Fame Air Museum, for all you have done to preserve our aviation history!

It was excellent to see the "Hawk" flying, especially with a legend at the controls, but I noticed {especially by the silhouette on the ground when flying over the airfield} how much the "Guardsmen" shows the early family lines of the "Thunderbolt". Great vid, thanks for posting.

The P-35 / AT-12 were the grandparents, so to speak, of the P-47 Thunderbolt. The P-35 led to the development of the P-43 Lancer which primarily saw service with the Chinese Air Force and limited use with Claire Chennault's Flying Tigers. Although considered unsuited for USAAC service, the P-43 was further developed into the highly effective P-47.

So cool! It's like an early, radial-engine P-40. Sensational airplane and great flying video;
@TheDustyShredder
@TheDustyShredder 5 лет назад
that is exactly what it is. The p40 kept the airframe, but curtiss slapped an allison v12 into it, and modified the cowl. unfortunately, that modification with the same airframe made the plane awfully nose heavy, so it was not as agile as it's predecessor. In War Thunder (which is probably the best world war combat simulator ever), the P-36G can out turn a spitfire from a later date no problem using its combat flaps, but the p40 would have great difficulty getting the spit off its tail. I've been wanting to find the G variant to restore for my own personal use, but it seems I'm gonna have to build one from schematics.

Awesome, considering such a plane was first to take out an A6M Zero at Pearl 76 years ago this month! Not only that, the plane actually landed after being shot up with like hundreds of rounds..

What a beautiful aircraft! I've often wondered the outcome if it had been fitted with the version of the R-1830 used in the F4F Wildcat with its great 2 stage/2 speed supercharging system. that seems to have have been as easy as fitting the Allison to the airframe. That certainly would have transformed its capabilities at higher altitudes.

I noticed that the P-36 had US insignia on all four wing surfaces. This was changed to only one such insignia on the bottom of the right wing and one on the top of the left wing at some later time. This arrangement persists until the present day. I wonder exactly when this change occurred and why.

I’ve been in love with the P-36 ever since I put together Academy’s 1/48 scale of her. I read about a couple of P-36s getting up in the air during the Pearl Harbor attack and I thought that was just awesome. I know they didn’t stand a chance against a Zero one on one, but just the fact that a couple of U. S. pilots held their own in them is just extraordinary. Hell just look what the AVG did with the P-40. I know they were obsolete during WW2, but they proved that they were more than capable with an experienced pilot. That’s my 2 cents of the day.

The Curtiss P36 was use in the battle of France during WW2 under the name H75: this aircraft was obsolete in 1939 (similar performances to the Morane saulnier MS406), but was reliable, easy to fly and very agile, so the french pilots like it despite the low speed and the low armament (only 4 x 7.5mm machine guns), and the french ace Edmond Marin la Meslée did shot down 20 (16 confirmed, 4 probable) bf 109 whith a H75...One H75 is restaured under french colors
