About us:
We're Jack & Megan, and in late 2020 we sold our belongings and packed our lives into our 2005 Toyota Troop Carrier to travel Australia. Our original plan was to complete a full lap of Australia and return home to Perth to resume our 'normal' lives. We decided we wanted to document our lap for the future and began sharing weekly travel vlogs of our life on the road and fell in love vlogging, filmmaking and sharing our lives with you. We completed our first lap and couldn't imagine living any other way so we decided to continue travelling and calling the Troopy home. We have gone on some crazy adventures since then and it is all thanks to you tuning in to join us every week.

The reason they're called floating floorboards is because they float, they expand and contract with the temperature, you can't butt them up against anything, you have to leave a gap and then you use an angle nailed into whatever they skirt vertically to conceal the gap... and whatever you put on top of them can't be connected to them or they'll warp ;-)

Make thicker ply covers so they just cover the dowels for the bed head and router the underside edges so they locate within the dowels. This would protect the top edge of the dowels.

Few things.. To prevent the bed head top from bowing, use Velcro or a single timber strip in the middle. Fill in nail holes with wood putty for a cleaner look. When cutting multiple pieces, set up a stop on the drop saw to streamline the process and avoid measuring each piece individually. Came back cause I realised how that all sounded, but it was because of your drop saw comment in the video. I’ll shut up now 🥰

21:29 With the half rounds, I’d cut all the vertical pieces and do a 45 bevel on the top edge before nailing them on. Then finish by adding another piece along the bottom as a skirt/kickboard.

I've had my Cruiser for 19 years, done over 450K in her, and have never found a name ... originally it was the "Horse With No Name", but she's now "The Old Girl". Am thoroughly enjoying the series. You are an editing talent Megan.

you could frame those sliders on the bed with aluminum top and bottom, it would add structure and style.

Use Velcro around all edges of top to hold bedhead tops down, ive done similar in Troopy build. Drill a finger hole in each top to lift out. No hinges needed.

To fix your beading length mix up, run a piece of beading horizontally across the bottom. Cut a piece as a spacer and use a multi tool to run the blade across the top of your bead spacer to trim the bottom off each piece of beading. I'm surè you got one in your Ryobi kit. If not, buy one you won't regret it. Stain your horizontal piece and install it below your neatly trimmed ends. Yippee, in building to hide something, you make a feature of it.

Oh my gosh, how hard is it, I mean really...we are doing our own Van build, he's a Toyota SLWB Commuter and seriously we get to the end of the day and hi-five that we didn't kill each other, there is soooo much detail and soooo many moving parts! Super fun tho and great to see progress. The bedroom area is amazing 👏 love ❤❤

@JulieRyan-wl8bc
@JulieRyan-wl8bc 3 месяца назад
Try small magnets on the under the sliding part with the magnet on the frame these are often used on wardrobe doors etc. depending in the size you may have to chisel a small piece out of the frame to inset them. This will also make them secure while travelling 😎😎😎

How about Ashley as it is the colour of ash. Love what you both are doing with the van. Also a little tip Jack not that is much of a problem because you seem to be doing ok but some times if you put a piece of sacrificial wood behind when you cut small timber it is easier to cut

To stop the thin ply from bowing, you could use rare earth magnets, recess them into the base and stick them onto the ply to snap down tight
@Kristina_Australia

Use magnets on the bedhead ply to stop it from bowing and also to hold it in place. It's something simple but you will appreciate it. The bedroom is coming together nicely. 👏
@hiltonr1845

Re the bed head , maybe glue timber brace underneath the ply and that should stop it from bowing. Not sure there is a way to skid it , but might be better to drill 20mm hole in the centre of each one and use that to lift up to get access to the storage area.

Cut a piece of thicker ply or pine to match the opening of your bed head and the clamp & glue the ply on top of it. Then it will sit in place without moving and will also prevent bowing. Drill a 32 or 40mm hole through the middle as a finger pull

Bertie and Mertle. There. Car named! 😂 Guys hope you have done your calculations on weights with the van and Bertie combined mass etc. do your homework or you may be leaving no capacity for your travel gear inside the van or even the car for that matter. The feature bed piece looks ace but that is a weight penalty. Less is…. Well, less!…. Saves fuel and makes the van more drivable on the road. Loving the series can’t wait to see her all finished and on your new adventures.

Do some Small pine pieces under your thin ply to use as locator pieces for your bed head. They'll not only stop the bowing they'll also prevent them moving around whilst you're travelling.

Congratulations on the progress. 👍 Since your LandCruiser is a 100 Series, why not call it "Sir John" (or for woman's name, "Dame Nellie"). I can just see it now, Sir John and Mertyl cruising down the highway (or Dame Nellie & Mertyl). 😁

So glad you got the drop saw. I know there's a limit to how many tools you can buy, but for cutting sheet material ( even drawer parts, ) a track saw is the perfect solution. Deadly accurate and very easy to use. I've recently built a drawer system for my 4x4 and bought the cheapest track saw I could find because I only needed it for this project. It's an Ozito which comes with 2 x 700 mm tracks then bought an extra 1400 mm track. You can join the tracks together to form a2800 mm track for your full sheets of plywood. With Ozito, you just need to make sure everything is calibrated correctly, throw away the blade and buy a quality one. BTW caravan project is coming along beautifully. Cheers, Jason

Suggestion for dowel meets floor gaps. Lay a 3mm packer or similar on the floor and cut with multi-tool. The even gap will allow for thermal and movement expansion and solve the visual irregularities.
