The shocks aren't 'soft', the angle of incident is excessive. At 20deg, the downward force is multiplied by three At 15deg, the downward force is multiplied by four At 1deg, it's approaching infinity. Seriously, take a class in trigonometry.

Ethan! I enjoy fabrication myself. Built my own race truck. One suggestion I haven't seen mentioned, perhaps get a tire tread cutter and "shoulder" the edges of the tires for a rounder profile. It'll help immensely with leaning and turning!!! Love the videos! Been watching since the beginning.
@Weezel13
@Weezel13 5 месяцев назад
I was thinking the same thing. Having such a squared off profile on the front tire and how a bike (actually turns opposite from the direction of handlebars) leans will be something to address. But boy what an EPIC build!!! Ethan your not alone in the OCD with overkill and details!

When you have the engine running, put the rear of the bike on a stand, and cut/ shave off the square edges of the tyres/ make the tyre profile much more round. It will significantly improve overall handling of the bike.

Honestly, I believe everyone is overthinking this. This is not going to ride anything like a traditional motorcycle. I would imagine the majority of its life will not be on pavement. So are the shape of the side lugs really gonna make that much of a difference ? Ever ride a bike with a 300 rear tire ? They have a rounded profile and handle like absolute garbage.

The problem with suspension is that if you for example have 3:1 leverageratio in linkage/ swing arm, then the actual spring rate at tyre/ wheel axle is spring rate divided with 3^2=9 -> spring/9. Or if leverage ratio is 2:1, then actual spring rate is spring/2^2= spring/4. That is one thing what most of the people, if "any", knows. And that is why typically these trial and error fabricators end up doing way too soft suspension. (Typically 600/100 street bikes have 2:1 linkage ratio, so when you use those shocks, keep that in mind). And also, if you want to use stiff spring, and you want to suspension to feel soft, then you just have to revalve compression damping and decrease compression damping, and suspension will feel soft even if you have (very) stiff spring.
@robertwilk-WabbieWasabi666
@robertwilk-WabbieWasabi666 5 месяцев назад
@@deadslow201 this comment is more about the tire than the suspension, there’s not really any safeguard keeping the rider from falling between frame/tire and becoming paste. That knobby tire gets you at any speed at all and it is all over. They need a backrest or a fender there.

I worked in the Marine Propulsion industry for a few years as a mechanical designer. We used to have bearing surfaces fabricated in to our input pinion shafts for the bow thrusters we manufactured from scratch. After initial machining of the pinions shafts from bar stock, post-spline work, etc. was done we'd ship the shaft off to have the bearing seat chrome plated, then grind the chromed bearing seat to .0005" press fit. Worked really well.

Looks sick so far!!! just FYI, the reason the suspension is a bit soft is because of the massive leverage that the front and rear swingarms have. In a normal motorcycle, they are more like 1.5-2ft long, and this is like 3-4ft. Longer levers mean more leverage on the springs.

A thing I noticed is that the front suspension has a very very large degree of geometry change through the suspension stroke do to it using a knuckle design combined with a single pivot swingarm. If you look at the Bimota/Vyrus system, they also use a single pivot, but the axle is floating with a rod leading back to the frame so that the steering angle of the hub remains the same as swingarm angle changes. Other systems like the ELF Honda use a knuckle kind of like yours/a car, but are a true parallelogram setup (like a double A arm car) so the steering angle is also fixed.

I've built a few funny front ends on motorcycles. What Ethan is making will be just fine. "Good enough" front steering geometry is very forgiving. (while "perfect" geometry is super picky) The high pivot point for the front swing arm annoys me more. It will make the suspension Harsh on bumps taller than about 12"...

Yes he will have caster change as the suspension travels. Not sure if that's an issue on bikes but some older cars like 1st gen broncos have a huge caster change as the suspension travels and it's a non issue. Come to think of it a Ford twin I beam has caster change too

need something between the back and the tire. that looks deadly but sick lol

I think it might get harder to lean with the tires actually spinning because you’ll have to fight that gyroscopic force from the huge rotational mass of the wheels…but I could be wrong.

Not sure how I stumbled on this channel - but I'm glad I did. Truly a master and artist at work! Tube assemblies are one thing I never really learned, but you make me want to!

Considering how much weight you're going to add to the center, I think you should double the springs front and rear. Don't forget that you won't always drive on flat roads!
@deadslow201

The problem with suspension is that if you for example have 3:1 leverage ratio in linkage/ swing arm, then the actual spring rate at tyre/ wheel axle is spring rate divided with 3^2=9 -> spring/9.

Cant wait to see how this turns out. That back wheel looks scary close to the rider though, what kind of plans do you all have in mind for fenders if any?

Was thinking the swing arm should be a foot longer at least and then a full cowl fender ….

Incredible idea, I love this thing, even gives a purpose to those giant chopper back rests; keep your back from getting ripped off by the tread.

I was a little bit sceptical about this build in the beginning, but now I totally love it. Everythink looks amazing and work that you put in is pure quality. It will be interesting how much dirt and rocks will this two huge tyres throw in a rider's face and back, haha.

Seat tube - back tyre. Just be sure when the tyre expands at speed and the seat is at full droop that the bike doesn’t try run over itself. I love that RU-vid recommended me this channel.
