I heard you liked ASMR, hand tool woodworking, artsy fartsy filming, and my daughter's perpetual nonsense, ... so here's an extra dose of all of that!
Don't miss the sound test!
• Quick SOUND TEST of my...
This is what happens when I can actually go to the lumber store and buy wood: I don't use my furniture to turn them into music instruments.
So ... here's my 4th guitar build, it's a custom shaped, neck through, offset semi-hollow body (or heavily chambered? thinline ? I do'n't know...), with P90 pickups, handcrafted in Belgium.
This took me 2 months to make, while working extremely slowly for various practical reasons. The build itself wasn't particularly challenging as it only consisted of combining, on the same instrument, a series of stuff I've already experimented with in my previous builds (a thinline body, a neck through, bound fretboard, I even re-used my own custom body shape, I already worked with all the hardware, and all the wood species). The only novelties for me were the use of P90's from Lollar, the wooden knobs and switch tip, and the 24 frets.
Oh, and this is part of the Great Guitar Build Off Unofficial Challenge 2020 !
Specs are:
- 5 piece center piece laminate (mahogany - wenge -walnut)
- walnut wings, wenge top, ebony fretboard, mahogany and wenge knobs
- 648 mm scale, 24 frets
- Lollar soapbar P90's
- Schaller Bridge - Kluson tuning machines - Graphtec nut
- finish : tung oil and polyurethane
- the pre-wired harness comes from nebulabelgium.com
Here comes the moment where I thank you all for making the Electric Shelf 335 go viral (the name was an idea I picked up in the comment section).
It makes my hobby seem a little less extravagant to me (as well as my friends and family ...) and keeps me motivated.

However, your work would command a very high value, especially when you document the build like you have. Truly exceptional work. Plus your filming and editing skills are great. I think you have woodworking in your blood. Not sure what you do for a living but really enjoyed this video. Many years ago I signed up for a adult woodworking class they taught at a local high school. The teacher was a guitar builder for ernie ball. They were making the eddie van halen guitars at the time. It was such a change from working all day. Of course I suck but after a long day of work nothing like a band saw spinning at a million miles an hour to help you focus your thoughts. Seriously you made my day and your talent is memorizing...keep spreading the joy brother🙂

I had made a couple ones already and it's very rewarding even when the result doesn't turn out exactly as you expect. To build a musical instrument from scratch is an unpaired experience. The best part is that it's a very straight forward job which ANYONE with minimum woodworking experience, a small set of tools and some patience can do over the dining room table.

I know that you don't build guitars for sale, and I think I understand the reasoning behind that. I will not try to convince you otherwise, but I have to say I would rather pay two to four thousand dollars for a work of art such as you have shown us here (or that wonderful 335 though I think I like this one more) than any mass produced guitar on the market today. You are creating things of beauty not only to the ears but to the eyes as well. May you long continue to make art such as this!

Thank you so much. I don't sell guitars for now because my priority is somewhere else, someday maybe :) but I'm quite a perfectionist and hate the idea of not being able to deliver something that's perfect to my eyes (and so far I haven't been able to even approach said perfection :p )

@@tchiksguitars I know what you mean, I build guitars for myself and people tell me I should sell them. The idea of perfection is so subjective, I feel that my guitars could be better, but your guitars are better than mine. You as an artist will always find fault or imperfections in your own work. I see things in my own work that others would not even notice. Just food for thought. :)

@@JHPRS I can blow a tune on a mouth organ but I couldn't manage to get one out of a guitar, just too many strings to get your fingers on.....I have five fingers on one hand and there are 6 strings????..... somebody got that wrong somewhere....so I bought one on EBAY, one that had all that whirly sunburst pattern and it came with an amplifier and a bag........now it sits in the corner of my bedroom and that is as far as I think it will get.....the DVD I got last Xmas did help and I managed to tune it or so it seems with the electronic tuner thing but getting a tune out of it is like going to the toilet with your hands in your pockets in the dark.....I did manage to play Old MacDonald and Baa Baa Black Sheep using just one string, the string next to the second one, but with the rest they all sound different.......as soon as the grooves in my fingers heal I'll try another tune.

I don't typically watch videos that have no commentary but it's an absolute pleasure just watching you work, and involving children in wood working always warms my heart. You do beautiful work and I wanted to thank you for this video 👍👍

This is by far the most in depth guitar build that I've seen. Without all the annoying audio in stupid music use in the background of most of guitar build videos I see I actually learned things about the guitar today and how they function this is pretty awesome.

I like to pride in the fact that I don't skip any (critical) step, I've been doing that since the very first video I posted and I thank you for noticing !!

@@tchiksguitars could I ask a follow up question? What kind of plane are you using at around 3:10 where you are cleaning up the band saw scarf cut? It looks like it’s maybe about 12-14” in length. But it’s hard to tell. Is it a normal “Jack Plane” or is it a specialty low angle plane?

your radius router trick was really a great idea. All really well done -- thank you! Also the way you did the glue up between the two pieces and the neck was very helpful too!
