For today’s custom, Vick is going to be making a custom Nike Dunk inspired by one of the rarest pairs of sneakers of all time, the 2003 eBay Nike Dunks…of which only two pairs are known to exist.
Ironically, the base shoe Vick's going to be working with is a 1 of 1 Nike ID pair of Dunks… that he found on eBay. They already have the general eBay color scheme going on, so they should be a great base to work with as we move through this sneaker customization.
After removing the laces and insole, Vick taped off the midsole and got straight to painting. Because this pair of Dunks isn’t real leather, we can skip the typical acetone prep work. Vick used standard white paint to cover the toe box and top portion of the upper and then moved on to some other colors.
With more tape firmly in place, we can lay down some yellow paint. The original yellow on these Nike ID Dunks was a little too dull for Vick’s liking, so he brightened it up a bit with a fresh coat.
Just as he did with the yellow, we’re going to make the red portion of the shoe brighter by adding yet another fresh coat of paint.
With that out of the way, it’s time to take these over to Julian for a permanent tattoo courtesy of the laser engraver. For this eBay Dunk custom, Vick chose to engrave the phrase “Reselling since ‘95” on each of the shoes. As with any custom sneaker, the personal details make the shoe, so shout out to Julian for the help, he came in clutch with the graphic design and laser engraving skills.
For yet another eBay inspired touch, Vick removed tags from eBay branded dust bags and glued them to the collar of the Dunks. These dust bags come straight from eBay when you purchase an authenticated shoe without a box.
Now we can touch up the blue swoosh with some brighter blue paint, and cover up any white paint we got on the swoosh and collar area from our earlier paint job. The last color to repaint is the green, which Vick did use an airbrush. With the paint job now complete, we can add some custom tongue tags designed by Julian.
And because these bad boys are going straight to eBay headquarters, the custom designed insoles include a nice ‘Thank You’ from the Reshoevn8r squad. The pattern is inspired by eBay and was created by our Creative Director, Eric.
What do you guys think? Vick took an already awesome silhouette and colorway from the 2003 eBay Dunks and put his own twist on it, and they turned out awesome.
Let us know down below if you think our friends over at eBay are going to be excited to see these…we think they’re going to love them.
