This is part 02 of my series Dream Garage, transforming a garage to a professional looking shop. This episode covers installing a shop hoist and hanging 1-5/8" uni-strut track, hangers and trolley wheels to allow X, Y and Z movement within the garage. This is a huge upgrade if you have a hard top you need to remove from a Bronco, Jeep or simply want to move heavy objects around. Subscribe to the channel to follow my Dream Garage Series!

@@jacobsupgrades yes, it is very satisfying to have your wife helping you in the things that you have to do my wife. She has literally help me put gutters work on foundation welding you name it she is a true ride and die chick. It seems like we get closer every time we do things like that together. Anyways, have a great day and thanks again for the video. What is the lifting capacity of it? I was wondering.

Nice! I love having the hoist and rails. I've even used the rails to set up a kids swing in the garage when I'm not using it.

Hello. First of all, congratulations on your great idea, I would like to know if you know what is the maximum weight you can lift with the structure you have set up. A greeting from Spain Francisco.
@jacobsupgrades
@jacobsupgrades 7 месяцев назад
@franciscosali8268, Great question! It's best to look at the cut sheet / spec sheet from the uni-strut manufacturer you plan to purchase from. They provide uniform load ratings for structural spacing. My structure is spaced 32in on center at the joists and spans 7ft between rails. The 7ft span can carry a uniform load of 483lbs but the hoist rating is 440lbs under a double line pull. I didn't want to go any higher in weight because I don't know the designed floor load I'm attaching the structure to above and wanted to stay in a safe working range. I visited Barcelona, Spain years ago and loved it! I'd like to make it back again some day.

My question is how smooth is the XY travel. Does the in between rail move smoothly or does it drag/ bind up on either side? Problem not addressed.
@jacobsupgrades
@jacobsupgrades 3 месяца назад
@oliviaolsen7157, great question, it can still bind up if the hoist isn't centered in the single track when moving side to side. When I get a chance I plan to run a second parallel rail and weld them together at the ends then weld up a bracket to mount the hoist in so it can run between the two rails and sit up higher giving me more lift height. This should help with binding up as another viewer has mentioned.

Loved your video. I’m thinking of doing the same thing, but on a slightly smaller scale (I only have a 1 car garage….but 12 foot cielings) Did you have any concerns about going straight into the studs? You’re not at all worried that over time, those screws into the studs may pull out? What size screws/bolts did you use? Thanks
@jacobsupgrades
@jacobsupgrades 6 месяцев назад
@michaelspellman5171, thank you, this is why I was so careful with locating the joist locations and verifying that I'm hitting them by pre-drilling I didn't want any pull out. This is also why I spaced the hangers every other joist to give more re-enforcement. I used 3/8" x 7" lag bolts - amzn.to/3vmQJu8

I need some engineer advice if you don’t mind. I’m trying to figure out if the ceiling I have in my garage will hold the weight of the strut channel system, the electric hoist and the weight of the hard top to my Jeep wranglerMy garage ceiling is 12ft high, it’s a finished ceiling with no insulation and there isn’t any bedrooms or other part of the house above the garage. The joists run perpendicular to the length of my garage and not the length of it. I’ve searched the internet to try and find how much weight each joist can hold or max weight if I spread it out over 5 or 6 joists, but I have not been able to find any answers. Do you think the joists would hold with no issues? I really do appreciate your time and assistance with this.
@jacobsupgrades
@jacobsupgrades 6 месяцев назад
@@michaelspellman5171 do you have access to the space above your garage? If you do sistering up the joists would be a good idea to stiffen them up and make sure you get a good bite with your track hangers. Those jeep tops aren't too heavy, if you disperse the load over 6 joists just make sure you hit them square. Once you get it set up test the hoist with some light loads first before you lift your top off.

When you have lifted the item, how do you move it on the Y axis and ensure it's moving uniformly across the rails ? I would think that one end might be a bit off from the other at times and you have to do minor adjustments... No ?
@jacobsupgrades
@jacobsupgrades 6 месяцев назад
It helps to move from the center and to push from the unistrut to ensure you're not torquing the hoist sideways.
@lys1805
@lys1805 6 месяцев назад
Ok, but overall it's riding smoothly you re saying. Thanks a lot.
@jacobsupgrades
@jacobsupgrades 6 месяцев назад
@@lys1805 overall it does move smoothly but it can get hung up on occasion from moving one side of the track quicker than the other. I'm within 1/32" of parallel but it still can bind up especially if the hoist is not in the middle while moving the load around. I love it though we use it to lift our Bronco top and platform / awning on my truck.
@lys1805
@lys1805 6 месяцев назад
Good to know. I think am gonna use something similar to hoist my snowblower on a shelf high up when not in use. Probably on a single unistrut. Thanks a lot, you guys did good work. It takes so much effort to hit the center of the joists and get the alignment correctly. I use a laser level for my projects and it's been a gamechanger
@jacobsupgrades
@jacobsupgrades 6 месяцев назад
@@lys1805 a single uni-strut run will be the smoothest way to move your hoist and objects around. Good idea on the laser level I'm sure it would be very helpful for this project! Good luck in putting your project together.

I am trying a similar system, but the hoist connects to a hanging chair. The huge frustration with his 2 direction system is the trolley wheels bind. When moving on the upper rails you have to carefully pull from a center position or it goes askew. How did you avoid this major problem, which nobody mentions?
@jacobsupgrades
@jacobsupgrades 7 месяцев назад
@Kevinbrandon25, this is a difficult part of the system is finding out where to move it from to prevent it from binding up. If the 2 tracks aren't perfectly parallel it will cause it to bind. I leave the trolly wheels tight enough that they won't come off but loose enough that they can move some to help prevent binding. Also if one side of the track gets ahead of the other it will bind up as well that's why it's easier to move from the middle.

I would have welded 2 parallel unistruts so that there are 2 pairs (4 wheelsets) about 1-2ft apart so that you now have a rectangle, so it is much harder to pull the lower unistrut unevenly.
@jacobsupgrades
@jacobsupgrades 4 месяца назад
@@rezenclowd3 great idea! I've been thinking of switching it up and doing that same thing. Also welding up a cradle to hold the hoist between the rectangle up higher to give better lifting height would be nice.
@sigel376
@sigel376 2 месяца назад
Easier than the rectangle idea, just use two sets of wheels spaced about 1ft apart in each track, then for each pair connect them with a short beam and attach the cross bar in the middle of those, so looks like an 'H', that takes out the shearing.

Nothing wrong with the content but great example of how to make a 5 minute presentation into a 15 min one.Edit! No one cares about how to plug an extension cord in or the inane conversations bwtween the presenter and his wife. Lastly the acoustics inside an emptry garage are terrible. I'd record the video the lay an audio track down on top of it.
