Thanks for the video Pete, I've been going through the same sort of stuff recently. As I said to you, some customers are like children. Some think you are a peasant. Only about 10% are absolute diamonds. For me, I find male customers are always the best - always the most understanding and appreciative... I suppose because they know what it's like?

I try not to get into shooting matches in the fear that they'll start a social media warpath. Had one with dog poo and mentioned I wouldn't be returning. Three days later recieved a message saying. "Thanks so much you've allowed me to find a better gardener, theyve done a great job today." To which I replied, "That's great news I'm glad your gardens looking so nice, have a wonderful evening. Regards, James". Passive niceness is the way forward in those situations for me Lol

I’ll try the being polite first but if they carry on then that’s when the line has been crossed and feel the need to have my say then walk away as it’s not worth the stress I agree with what you say tho mate I think I should try the passive niceness and just say thanks for your time and walk away with a smile on my face and replace them Have a good week mate thanks for checking in

Recently had a job expensive property expensive cars.Put forward a quote which they where happy with then on a regular basis they wanted cheap I said no then walked away.

Hi pete, your video resonated with me deeply, i've had nightmare customers over the years, & it's only took until this year for me to put my foot down. An example; we turned up to a recent garden where he had already let us down recently & not been in... same thing happened again this day, I texted him & told him my worker was there, his reply "come back in an hour" as you can guess, I couldn't delete his number quick enough. I wouldn't go back again if he paid me £100 instead of the usual £20, totally wipe my hands of them now. Keep your head up

My Rule of thumb when taking on clients is in initial discussion ask why they need you...as in is it due to the previous gardener retiring or moving etc.....if their response is a bit evasive....such as oh we just had different ideas etc ....that's when my alarm bells go off. Hi Nancy exactly it’s such a shame we have to deal with people like this All we ask for is alittle appreciation it’s amazing how far that goes sometimes The best customers and most reliable are the old lady’s they value your work and appreciate what you do for them These are the ones I’m happy to make time for go the extra mile for and be that person that sits and has a cup of tea with them. So they have someone to talk to That can make a huge difference to their day as they don’t always get visitors Thank you for watching I really appreciate your time to watch the videos 🙏 have a blessed week

Hi Pete I replaced three contract jobs this year for different work more local been there for years and years I gave them notice in February to leave end of march on on all of them did not get spoken to by any of the residents for the rest of the visit some people just can't please run it for you 👍

I do exactly the same. Keep the Friday free if you need it. Also helps with the bank holidays! As for the difficult customers. I have a league table. If you find yourself at the bottom you are at risk of the chop!!

Hi mate firstly well done for starting up so many people say they want too but don’t take the plunge It’s well worth it I’m now 6 years into my journey and you will have so many different experiences good and bad Don’t let the negatives put you off it’s a shame you’ve already been messed around but it shows you that people can be hard work sometimes Customers come and go so don’t feel bad if any go Better clients are just around the corner and that’s how you’ve got to look at it buddy Keep up the great work your doing 💪🏼💪🏼 Have a good week mate

yes Pete mate scrap the crap i had one end of 2022 season the fella said his work was slowing up his wife texted me your work not up to standards and been slipping all that i didnt even respond to her message didnt go back spring 2023 he was texting me can i get on with the job lawn need sorting all has got messy over winter. my response to that was simple the slot has gone he came back with happy to have another slot to suit i simply said they have all gone as i am on high demand as we all are i always say in my planning that we need a work flow and i always say 5 jobs a year will go ive lost 7 jobs since 2020 and taken on something like 35 jobs and and just this weekend 4 more calls have come in so planning staff but its staff lol the joys of being a self employed gardener hey haha all the best to you mate

Some clients seem to believe that gardeners want/need every job we look at. They think your success depends on whether or not they "give you" the job. Sometimes they get a shock when it is the gardener turning them away lol.

Hi Adam I’ve got a few at the min that are driving me insane it’s just mad how people can be so unreasonable given the weather we’ve had We can only but do our best some people expectations are just too high. They expect too much for very little. It’s funny they grumble about our prices for grass cutting and stuff. Yep they don’t grumble about the prices of energy bills or food prices in the shops. They just pay the price

Yes my man. It’s tempting to get into it with them, and I hear ya, but I take more pleasure somehow replying “Yes, ok no problem, all the best” something like that 😂 because I just know it really winds them up. The one that irks me is when they question an invoice.. oh that sounded a bit high etc we don’t see it could have taken so long etc those ones.. they still disturb me. Occasionally I’ll get those.. I had it the other day.. “me and my husband thought that was high for just mowing the grass” cue my rage 😂 in those instances instead of getting irate I’ll just plainly outline what I did. I told her.. “I didn’t JUST cut the grass, the grass was left to get long.. I mowed lawn twice, strimmed edges and details, leaf blowed etc and took excess grass away.. these are specialist tools not JUST run over the grass.. she was stumped and paid up 😂❤

This sounds like a job I did Friday the grass was long they’ve got round slabs that they wanted shaping and the top of a hedge shaping I did the grass strimmed slabs done edges weeded beds gave them an invoice then got high pete can you tell us what you did Friday? So questioning what I’d done when it would have been so obvious I sent them two more messages on WhatsApp two blue ticks no reply and still haven’t paid me I’m going back Tuesday with big AL and we’re have the money for last visit and that visit before we get any tools out

why dont you get into doing lawn renovations, you say the lawn was full of moss why not scarify it, aerate it , overseed and top dress. in a few weeks when the grass comes through you can fertlise it and it be striping up like wembley.

Just keep your head down and F people like that. I've had a couple of those type of customers in the past, you do Everything for them, hit any problems, keep them well informed and the they still screw you over. This is one reason why I've gone Full Commercial and Stately Homes and the like. With the Commercial type clients, as long as it's a Genuine reason and communication is kept up, they are all good. I do get the odd Farm Estate that gets a little disappointed if things aren't done to a timely fashion, but as long as it's a genuine reason and I'm not messing her around, she is totally fine with delays.

I’ve got a good mix of commercial and domestic Most of my commercial sites don’t like me filming so don’t at those The domestic gardens people seem to be ok for the best part But I like what your doing communication is key i agree bud

The WhatsApp thing is so bloody annoying... Always I'm taking time to estimate, to write break downs of the job and send the quote and... No reply back...so frustrating! Some people are not treating us, gardeners as we would deserve.

@@THETATTOOGARDENER83 All good down here our Autumn is very mild and winter looks like being Mild as well , normally our busiest time but Mate age is slowly getting me at 70 next birthday , my Mum is 93 on 50 acres and still going and believe it or not a Summerset lass came to oz in the early 50s !

Aw Pete mate unreal some of them. I had a local Karen. She wanted weeding done so messages saying yeah 15 quid per hour. Yeah sure no worries when can u start. Tomorrow is good. Okay come tomorrow I won’t be home but come round after when I back from work and I’ll pay the. Sure no problem I’ll get it done and send you the pictures when finished. Okay no worries thanks. 3 bloody hours on man hands and knees for this witch. Sent all pics of start and finish times 3 hours 45 quid right. As you say mate seen no reply. So messages later asking if she was in. Again seen no reply. So went to her house knocked on the door. She answered saying 45 pound are you mental. I said but that’s what we agreed 15 per hour and it took 3 hours......oh no I’m not paying that you said 15 for the whole thing to be done......well...as you mate not a bad bone in this broken temple of a body....but this boot...just made me go hulk mode.....I took all the weeds from her bin and launched them all over her “prized” flower bed 😂😂. No longer a customer let’s say ...just riles yer up dude. But hope all is well with you and fam buddy

My god she got a great deal £45 for 3 hours graft is cheap mate She’d have hated my price it would have cost her £90 I’m £30an hour now The going rates £25-£40 an hour The women you dealt with was living in cuckoo land I’d have done the same as you mate well done for walking away Where about’s in the country are you James I’m sure you could easily get £25 per hour mate I want all my fellow gardeners to be earning well we all work bloody hard If anyone knocks you down don’t take them on better ones are always just around the corner Keep up the great work your doing James 💪🏼

@THETATTOOGARDENER83 Thanks for answering pete....I'm in Central Scotland. I've commented on a few vids especially weather ones 🤣🤣. Ooft mate I think your customers are awesome and know your worth and therefore pay for the work carried out. In saying that....I've had customers where I'm like...mmm big jobs ...big pay and wow sure enough ...happy with prices quoted and pay up when jobs completed.... I once quoted a "pilots" garden or so he says. But the garden was massive 3 tiered size of football pitches . Swimming pools....whole 9.yards. now this garden would've needed strimmed and cut probably twice...itbwas a full days work as he had no refuse bins so would had to take that away. Anyways as said full day. Weeding strimming cutting hedges the lot. Quoted £400. Told me to GTF basically 🤣🤣. Its true what they say. This is how rich people stay rich. They want to pay peanuts for massive jobs as I call them chav cuts.....bottle of el dorado and a half gram 🤣🤣

@@davegill7614 todays raining down south it’s horrible I’m fed up with it My mates got a lawncare company and he’s finding it harder and harder now he’s considering selling up and moving away and doing something different The weather being poor and clients have high unreasonable expectations for such little money is so sole destroying But for now we keep plodding on and doing all we can to keep the few decent ones happy they are what makes it worth while
