Just watching him grin when the throttle was hit even put a smile on my face just like the days of of past did with BMX bikes, go karts, Atari’s, and swims in the creek.
Right, that’s all I see these days! Although I ain’t gonna lie, the thought has crossed my mind, to pull my 109 and pack her away with 24k on it and drop an ls to go racing. But probably won’t bother.
@@Theyoufeelme Probably so but there are also 8 second daily driver combo for these cars and they still pull decent MPG if you stay out of boost. My Dad had one he had built and finally sold a few years back. Biggest issue is stock electronics holding it back.. they really need a FAST or some other EFI controller to get the most out of them. The 1987 computer is to slow and has issues.
“Man your shits running good you’re about to have a good weekend” that’s a mechanic I’d want working on my cars lmao none of that “it should be good” bs
1987….the one year a stock Buick V6 made more HP than a stock Chevrolet 350 small block in the corvette. And it was awesome. Always loved the GN’s & GNX.
Maaaaaan, I still have mine fully built with 52k original miles on it! Really clean and looks bone stock, but ain't shit stock about it but the look! Love these GN's man!
Damn.... I can only IMAGINE the excitement the days leading up, and then the day going to get it... Then getting laid that night. You have a GN back then, even an ugly guy was getting laid !
Dropped out of college and started my shop before I was 21. Its been an amazing 20+ years. Stick with it. Savor EVERY vehicle you get blessed to be trusted with. Let the BS of the bad customers are detractors slide. Take plenty of pictures and make a log Enjoy your path. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and go sit in the middle of my shop trying to chase some of the memories and remember the struggles that happened along the way trying to recapture some of the magic Took some time off from touching customer cars and am JUST starting to do some stuff for legacy customers but most of all, working on my own stuff having spent decades being to tired or bored to touch my own collection Congrats
That torque does it, Skip felt the G’s. Very classy touches, nothin over the top. That’s the essence of these collectibles. Great job, super clean all around.
I seen that and a lot more...dated a lady who lived in Pontiac Michigan back in '87 and when I would visit her she knew how much I loved muscle cars so she would take me by the Plant that these bad boys was made at and just an amazing site...rows and rows and rows of these turbo Buick's whether it was the Grand National or T-Type...those was the BEST DAYS
Welll...I was 18 when the GN came along, and it was a unicorn. It was weird (V6 turbo? WTF?) and wonderful (fast.) But at the time, there were fast American cars everywhere, in particular the Mustang GT (and the great LX notchback 5.0) along with the GM F-bodies, and even the GN's little brother, the turbo Regal. But at that time, turbos were NOT cool with the 'merican car club boys. Too euro, too Asian. The Mustang SVO was uber-cool, but no V8 meant nothin but hate. In this mix, the GN was a low volume oddball only true enthusiasts recognized. It by no means represented a return of 'merican muscle. Just a neat experiment GM signed off on. In fact, I knew "poor kids" that drove new Monte Carlo SS's who thought they were the shit and had no clue those monotone black Buicks were king of the hill. I drove a Grand Prix but did always prefer the Regal looks. Interesting to think what might have been if Pontiac got the GN treatment.
I bought 1 from a gym buddy back in 1992 for 8k , with 50k miles on it , I had it for a couple years until someone stole it , It was a fun car to drive one of my favorites, but it was a headache in terms of keeping it running perfect , with no internet back then it was hard to find shops / mechanics / hi performance parts to get it done right, we used magazines and word of mouth , the car with all its sensors was ten years ahead of its time back in the day , happy to see you keeping them alive
Yes, luckily we have been able to gain a lot of knowledge of these beasts and have had the innovative available to really keep them running good and 21st century technology
My uncle had a 87 Monte Carlo he bought brand new stolen from in front of his house years ago. It was all white. Pretty quick car. It was a shame they never found it.
@@mickeyd4012 im saying the one shop that was king dick for GNs in the late 80s,90s and early 2000s. Conley was one of the first super fast turbo Buicks.....he went in the 7's (with a green car named "Tweaked") with the electronic fuel injection Turbo V6 based off the ones that came in the GN before anyone else did it. His accomplishments with the EFI turbo V6 in my opinion is probably in the same league as the late Buddy Ingersoll.
Dude seems real happy with his car now. Grand Nattys are such a treasure…I got myself a 19 TourX I’ve ECU tuned and put a k&n in. Still warrantied so can’t go too crazy, but she’s a pretty legit spaceship on the highway!
Yeah, that's plenty fast! I gotta say, love these Grand Nationals. A true man's car. It ain't no hype machine, but it's nothing boring. Like a perfect medium, not a kid magnet, but nothing women would shy from. Makes you wonder if GM doesn't do this again because they know they'd hurt Corvette sales further than the hypercar thing they did last...
Several years ago I spotted what looked like a GNX, in mint condition. It was quite badass, & sounded absolutely amazing. The fella said he paid $88K for it, which seemed like a steal, considering how few of them were made. But, it had a landau top. Homie got played BIG time!
Nothing like a clean black GN that hauls ass still!! I still have my 87 GN fully built with the Turbo 6 still in it. Very clean car with 52k original miles on it, looks bone stock but nothing stock about it but the look! Glad the customer is happy with his car in this video!
Super nice. I've wanted one of those for a long time. Back in the day I bought a trashy 78 Gran Prix and my buddy got parts and pieces from an 85 Monte Carlo, and suped it up. He kept talking about getting a turbo for it, I was happy blowing the doors off the tricked out Hondas that are around here.
Grand Nationals will always have a place in my heart, it was a car that got me lots of skins in high school in the 90's (and it wasnt mine!). They used to be all over here in Michigan back then, but sadly I rarely see them anymore.
Hell yeah man. I had a ss camaro back then and got my ass handed to me by some old ass nerdy guy in a grand national while we were cruising gratiot. Let’s just say that embarrassment ended my night early
Haha this popped up in my recommendations u guys are like 20 minutes away from me ..all my aunts and uncles and cousins live in Brookfield...i even noticed you drove past irish times there on ur test ride lol good shit
7:35 MAN that was my view to school n work 30 years ago! 1981 Buick Century estate car - no, not Estate wagon, but someone who died and left their estate up for sale. I got this granny Buick Century for $1,500 back in 1990, only 4,000 miles on the clock. Just needed new tires and alignment, and off I went, for the next 7 years of ownership! Took it up to college with me, loaded five college buddies in it and we went off campus, to the mall etc. That Century and the car in this video would be considered large sedans nowadays, and something to treasure! Nice work on the Regals!
1990s I had a boosted 347 stroker Mustang. It made a ton of power. The only cars I was concerned about taking my money were the GNs. One GN had "Stang Bangin Buick" on the spoiler. Those 6 bangers surprised everyone!!
The V_6 3.8 was geared weird too. My parents had an Oldsmobile with that set up. It was super quick off the line. Add in the turbo boost and your moving.
When I got mine brand new It ran great! Then 4 months later it had a bad torque converter. my dealer sent the car out to a local transmission shop and I ended up with a lousy stock transmission that didn't chirp rubber any more. Then It started breaking up at high rpm. I left it with him for a month and he couldn't figure out how to fix it so I took it with him saying I shouldn't! Gave him the middle finger and went to another dealer. They fixed it the same day with a new distributor coil cap. Ran good again. They got me a new GN trans too all free! Ran it with High octane aircraft fuel and 21lbs of boost and slicks beating everything on the street I could find till someone stole it from me.
I'm so glad I got to drive an 87 GN. This car is the reason I drive a 2016 F165. (F150 with the 2.7 ecoboost 165 cuin twin turbo v6). My truck even sound like a GN sometimes.
You lost me when you got in the drivers seat of the owners car when he came to pick it up, bro never ever came across that in my life of cars and mechanics😆
Back in the day. North side of Milwaukee all the G bodies used to go hard at the races. I remember the turbo Honda’s and the turbo G bodies always going at it.
Almost got one of these when I was a "kid". It was all good until my dad floored it while making a u-turn on the test drive... I heard that turbo spool and I knew it was all over. Only time I've heard my Mom say the "F" word.. as in "F no! Take this back to the dealership, now!!!"
Man your the best for turbo regal. Sounds like you know them better the the engineers that built them new. I thought you guys was going to break the seats when you launched it from a dig! That car is living its best life. I enjoyed the video! Later man✌
One of my dream old school cars to own and it's the most under rated muse car I mean Richard petty won 2 Nascar championship with this car 1st generation I think he had in 82
The grand national is definitely in my top 5 favorites. What happened to the American auto? They don't make awesome affordable cars anymore, it is sad.
The 1987 Buick GNX was around $30000+ msrp back in 1987. By today’s dollar, that around $73000. So $45000 for a new Mustang GT is a better deal overall than it would be to buy a new GNX by today’s money. $73000 gets you a C8 Corvette which is a better car than the GNX would ever be. So fun cars are still out there and cheaper comparing when comparing the dollar back then to now.
I know it feels like it, but that's not really the case. The GNX was about $65,000, adjusted for inflation, when it was new. Current starting MSRP for a new C8 Corvette is $61,000. Now, whether or not people have more disposable income these days to actually buy this stuff... .That could be debated for sure.
Not reality whatsoever. We are living in the pinnacle of muscle/performance & it’s not even close. You realize while I type this you can buy a DODGE DURANGO 3 row SUV w/ AWD & God damn 710hp & a warranty that can tow friggin 9k lbs for around $80k? Now consider that adjusted for inflation a GN turbo back in late 80s was more like $75-80k+ a markup on top of that….
Man, I never knew about the Buick Grand National until I saw it on an episode of Junkyard Digs. You ought to hook up with him and do some episodes on the BGN's. He would geek out hardcore on these. Of course, he would beg to own one lol...
I remember in 1987, when we saw one of these 1st show up in town. An Air Force guy brought it to town. People not "in the know", mostly old dudes laughed at it until it started smokin' the shit outta nearly everything it raced on the weekends. Thats when they found out that there was in fact a "replacement for displacement".
U wanna run that grand national? 😆 such a badass car....i wanted 1 so bad when i was growing up! I remember when people used to get Monte Carlos and make them look like a GN 🤣!! Clean af car bro
I had a 1970 Roadrunner. Vitamin C Orange, Air Grabber, Nitrous in the trunk 500 horse. This Damn Buick was the only one on the strip to smoke me every time!🤣
