Thank you for doing these videos! I have only tried once to redo the face on a Tangkou? Several years ago, but I was too timid and didn’t really know what I was doing. She looks lovely with her eyes shut but when they are open she just looks startled, lol. I think I’m going to have to have another go. I recently, thanks to the encouragement from watching your videos, ordered and replaced the body of a Blythe doll I bought a while ago and now I’m thinking of getting a complete bare doll to attempt customising again. It’s great that you share where you get your tools and the products from that you use since, where I live in Scotland, it’s hard to find these things. @BethRamsden

Thank you so much!! I think I was too heavy on the grit when I sanded this one, so would say something like 400 and up? The ones you can use wet are great, and they get very high grit numbers, which you'll want to use for smoothing everything out. I've been recommended to use the Magic Erasers (wet or dry) for finishing off too! ^_^

yes im a bout to try my first Custom of a: Wednesday Adams Blythe - so i have the main doll kit set sorted so-far - but yes i see they give you a decent amount of plastic in the thickness of the face plate around the nose and lip area there, to sculpt the nose or lips - aside from using/ sculpting with Epoxy Putties like milliput - which is what i usually customize Action Figures with or Tamyia Epoxy Putty. but yes indeed i have my own dremel tool and tool bits there to give things a go with ☺

Excellent!! I loved customising my own Wednesday ^_^ I recommend holding the face plate up to a light periodically while sculpting, so you can see the thinnest/brightest areas to be careful with - but as you say there's always epoxy! Hope you have fun with her! ^_^
@masterversal-toyhunter
@masterversal-toyhunter Год назад
ahh yes indeed - i saw you do that in one of your other videos there, yes with thin plastic in some areas you can run out of material fast. but indeed to build areas up in other ways - say building up the bridge of the nose higher there's your epoxy putties, or for filling in any miss haps, i suppose☺

Hello Beth, I have just discovered your videos and find them inspiring. I want to learn how to customise my own 12inch Blythe doll. I been on to the Ali Express website But can you please suggest which kit I buy to start with. Which body is the best ? I would also like to buy spare face plates to practice on as a complete novice. It would also be good to get one with all the components so I can practice taking it apart. I would be most grateful for your advice. Kind regards Lorraine

Hi Lorraine! I have a FAQ here that has links and answers some of your questions: bethramsden.com/faq Personally I would advise getting a Blythe on a jointed body, like you see in this video. I'd avoid the very cheap ones (£4), as I find the eyes impossible to remove. The ones that are around £17-30 should be just fine. The shop I link in my FAQ sells face plates, eye chips, all the individual parts! Hope that helps for now! Best of luck and I hope you have fun with it!! ^_^

@BethRamsden

Thank you! You’ll need to remove all the marks before varnishing. Use increasing grit numbers, finer and finer until the face is smooth. It’s the most tedious part of the process unfortunately! Once smooth, you can wash and prep the face for colour 😁👍🏻

Hello! I've watched your video because of the very specific problem. My Pullip doll arrived and after unboxing there was a shiny patch on her forehead, probably from the age of the doll and the box. The question is - can I use the same sanding method like you use with Blythe? Will it help to achieve this beautiful matte look?
@BethRamsden
@BethRamsden 6 месяцев назад
Hi! I don’t have a Pullip doll myself, but I’m guessing the plastic type is very similar? You could try using a ‘magic eraser’ first? It’s a kind of white melamine sponge, that is a bit like a super-super fine sandpaper. I have seen the maker of Smart Doll recommend using them to remove shiny spots from vinyl dolls. If you do choose to use that or sandpaper, try it on an inconspicuous area first, and make sure it is very very fine grit (over 1000 by our measurements) 🤞🏻 I hope it works out!!

@BethRamsden
@BethRamsden Год назад
Hi! I think I showed my method in the 'customised sad faceplate' video if it's not in this one, but I used a tiny bit of vaseline on a cotton ball to wipe and remove the sanding debris from the tan colour faces once they've been sanded. It's possible you'll need some even finer sandpaper if you can see little scratches on her cheeks now, but if you can get it super smooth, then clean away the dust (and gently wash the faceplate after), then you'll just need to re-seal the whole face, this will hopefully even out the finished texture all over - you can use matte Mr.Super Clear or equivalent, or a satin or gloss varnish if you prefer the shiny look. Hope that helps! ^_^

Ah yes I know what you mean! I am certain I mention it somewhere in another video, but I was told after this video to try using a 'magic eraser' sponge (I think it's a melamine sponge?) wet or dry, or both! after rubbing a small amount of vaseline all over the face. apparently the vaseline grabs all the fine white dust from sanding, and the sponge helps to clean it all away. you can give the face a wash in soapy water after that too. It seems the white marks are a problem when sanding darker skin, but this tip should really help you ^_^

I’ve no idea what the brand is sorry, It’s a pretty basic airbrush and compressor though, nothing fancy! 😅

@@BethRamsden thanks for taking the time to answer I was amazed at the finished result I think it’s one of the most beautiful types of crafts you can do, I like to design and create there clothes. One day soon I will try to customize a factory doll like you do.

I’m an artist and I’m obsessed with these dolls they cost 400-10000 usd. So I figured why don’t I make them myself

@@catgrluvr2003 Ahh sorry! I have shown some fully painted ones before (In my first series of customising videos) but also a couple of ways to re-use existing eye chips in my Mermaid custom Blythe video, hope that helps for now, but it’ll definitely be something I show again in the future (I have a new silicon mould to try making resin eye chips from scratch!) ✨😊✨

I know this is an old video, but I saw you used a special mask when you were applying the sealant. Is it toxic? Do you have any recommendations for nontoxic sealants so I don’t have to use a mask?
@BethRamsden
@BethRamsden 2 месяца назад
I don't know of any sealant spray that's advisable to use without some sort of protection, I would simply advise a good respirator mask, and a well ventilated area - or do it outside if the weather allows?

Can’t you just remove the glaze with acetate?
@BethRamsden
@BethRamsden 5 месяцев назад
Acetone is often used on vinyl doll heads like Barbie or MH, but Blythe heads are a different hard plastic - Acetone could melt it, so it is risky!
