Can't thank you enough. As a night photographer it is important to not leave the LCD screen on once you've composed the shot - the light screws up other photographers who are exposing. The R6 does not have that feature other than the customize button to switch LCD and VF. Life saver!!

I just shoked how stupid are default settings for buttons on R6/R5 - like disabled by default joystik and wasted SET button for same function which joystick click does.

What is ZOOM TELE? in the custom menu under video it's available BUT I can't find anything online on what it does. I've tried it and see nothing happening
@PointsInFocus

Zoom/Tele only works with lenses that have an optional power zoom module. So right now it's the RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z with the optional power zoom moudle, EF-S 18-135 w/ the power zoom module, and I believe (but don't quote me on this as I can't afford them) the EF mount Cine Zooms that also have power zoom modules.

Just curious why you didn't mention there are some important customizing options like "Mode" that are not available in the R6. Also no C1-C2-C3 for video in the R6.

I apologize for the confusion. This video, as with the others in the series, is primarily intended for the EOS R5, not the EOS R6. However, since the two cameras (and the rest of the EOS R series) share most of the underlying software this means that most of the big picture things will be done the same way between the two cameras, but sometimes the details will vary (such as the ones you noted). I do try to delineate when other EOS R series cameras differ from the R5, but since I don't shoot with anything other than the R5, sometimes I miss or forget to include them.

@@PointsInFocus going into this, I was ok giving up resolution to save $1300, but lack of customization for two extremely important functions like mode and video is disappointing. When I reached out to Canon today they said the R5 and R6 are very different cameras with completely different functionality.

Can you pls explain the RAW/JPEG one touch button? Using the Q, I can't see that it does anything but maybe I'm doing something wrong. I tried keeping it all in HEIF and/or JPEG and using that button to move to RAW but it does nothing. Thanks - really have learned a lot from your videos!
@PointsInFocus
@PointsInFocus Год назад
The RAW/JPEG function switches between whatever you've set the camera to (e.g. through the Q menu, the shoot 1 image quality settings menu, and the RAW/JPEG configuration you've set in the button's customization options (press info while setting up that button function to change the settings). For example, if you set the button up to use RAW+JPEG Small, and your camera is normally set to RAW only, then when you press that button it will change the image quality between RAW and RAW+JPEG Small. The new image quality will be briefly displayed at the bottom of the live view image, and the quality settings will change and blink in the advanced shooting info overlaid on the display when the camera is using the settings form the button function.

@@PointsInFocus Thanks so much for the detailed info. I just can’t get it to work for some reason but will keep fiddling. Am in Av or Fv mostly in case that matters. The image quality button works fine, but the one touch seems to do nothing. Maybe it’s bc of HEIF. Anyway thank you

If anyone can help me with my problem, then it's you: In the m-fn menu (if you press the m-fn button), the dials to change the settings are orange colored, so they have to be customizable. Years ago I saw a video and changed that setting and now I want to change that back again, but I don't find that option in the menu...
@PointsInFocus
@PointsInFocus Год назад
As far as I know what the dials do in the dial function menu can't be changed and I can't say I ever remember seeing a way to change them.

@@PointsInFocus Thank you for your answer. I guess I just have to reset the settings then.
@PointsInFocus

Do yourself a favor and save your camera settings to a card before you do that. That way if it doesn't do what you're expecting, you can at least quickly get your settings back. As an aside, on your camera which dials are doing what in your dial function menu? On mine, the main & top dial changes which setting is selected (e.g. ISO, AF, metering mode), and the rear dial changes what that setting is set to (e.g. ISO 100, 400, etc.).

Billy 1 second ago I'm having a weird problem. I have the R5C, I set the custom button on the video menu and they are fine. I just set some on the photo menu and they are set but the moment the camera goes to sleep or I turn it off, it resets them. I have no idea why or what I'm doing wrong.
@PointsInFocus
@PointsInFocus Год назад
Is your camera set to a custom shooting mode (C1-C3) when you're changing the button settings?
@Billy-py7zi
@Billy-py7zi Год назад
@@PointsInFocus I believe it was. But I figured save the settings. Wipe the camera, and start again and that actually did the trick. It could also be that I was in C1. Thanks for the reply. Appreciate it.
@PointsInFocus
@PointsInFocus Год назад
Yea, so the custom settings save their button functions separate from the main button function settings, and if the custom settings aren't set to auto update or manually updated, then when the camera sleeps or powers off, they're reset to the saved settings when the custom mode was created.

@@PointsInFocus Aaahh, that's good to know. It's always frustrating and sometimes the mind goes to "is my camera broken" haha. Good thing it isn't

Can you make a custom button to switch between clog / clog3
@PointsInFocus
@PointsInFocus Год назад
Unfortunately no. The best you could do in that respect would be to add the clog settings menu to your “My Menu” for easy access.

When customizing buttons while you are in a video mode, say C3 Video, what does the photo column of buttons actually do? I am seeing that it does nothing. The settings seem to be ignored. Instead, when you flip to photo mode, it will honor your settings in C3 photo mode.
@PointsInFocus
@PointsInFocus 6 месяцев назад
For the custom modes, they're just ignored. My guess from an embedded systems engineering perspective it used less space to have 2 different sets of UIs one for the normal modes with both the photo and video options, and one for the custom modes with only one, and the associated logic to store things properly. Than it does to have just one UI, and store the extra settings that subsequently get ignored. It can all be the same code path, there's no need for any special case logic.
@rcrinsea
@rcrinsea 6 месяцев назад
@@PointsInFocus - They are ignored for all modes, not just the custom modes, in my experience. I just got off the phone with Canon support after about 90 minutes and they couldn't help me. To allow a user to configure something and then to ignore the config and not even explain which modes are supposed to work is very surprising to me. Can Support doesn't even know why the column is shown.
@PointsInFocus
@PointsInFocus 6 месяцев назад
Re: "They're ignored for all modes." No, they're not. If you put your camera in aperture priority in photo mode and change a video mode button function, that change will be reflected in all of the non-custom shooting modes in video mode (P, Tv, Av, M). I'm not 100% sure what auto does, since I don't use it at all, but I think it always uses the default Canon button assignments. The camera has 7 sets of saved settings which include the button functions. 1 for each of the 6 custom shooting modes (3 in photo, and 3 in video) and 1 for all of the non-custom exposure modes in both photo and movie mode. With few exceptions, anything you set in an C mode will be only saved for that C number in the photo or movie mode where you set it.
@rcrinsea
@rcrinsea 6 месяцев назад
@@PointsInFocus - I have discovered that what you say is correct only if you're configuring buttons while in a non-custom mode. If you're in a custom mode and configuring buttons, your configs have no effect for the opposite mode type. Another way of wording is this: "If you are configuring buttons while in any custom VIDEO mode, no changes you make to any button config in the PHOTO column has any effect at all". And: "If you are configuring buttons while in any custom PHOTO mode, no changes you make to any button config in the VIDEO column has any effect at all."
@PointsInFocus
@PointsInFocus 6 месяцев назад
To be honest, it seems to me like your confusion over this stems from the way the camera handles custom user modes not the button settings. All of the custom user modes on the camera store their settings separately. When I say all here, I mean that C1 in photo mode is not the same as C1 in movie mode. In other words, think of the camera as having 6 custom user modes, not 3. Changing a photo mode button setting in a movie custom user mode, doesn't have any effect in the photo custom user mode not because the camera ignore the settings, but because the photo custom user mode has it's own completely separate set of settings that are loaded when you switch into it. This is true for all of the settings that are saved by the custom user modes too, not just the button configurations.

Hi, Thank you for this. By any chance, is it possible to customize any button to go directly to the WiFi/Bluetooth Connect mode ? I like to download the photos I took to my iPhone, and getting to that menu is a huge number of scrolls . If there was a quick way to jump straight to it, it would be so useful.

I think the button function you're looking for is "Wi-Fi Function" it'll be the end of the list.

It would be nice to have a faster way to switch between the subject to detect settings, unfortunately, there's no button option for that. The best you can do is add subject to detect to your "My Menu" and set the My Menu as the default screen that comes up when you hit the menu button.
