If you want a better option for a blackwash, switch out the paint for acrylic ink. It tends to work a lot better for washes and tends to come out to about the same price.

This is kind of a random thought but how cool would it be to have a mannequin and weapon plaque in the background of the set to show of what was made in the episode and as you make new things for your larp costume you can add it to the mannequin and we can literally see the progress in each episode. Not sure why but my ADHD brain keeps looking in the background thinking a mannequin decked out in your gear would look good there lol.

another cool rivets trick is to use googly eyes. for foam, you can use a wood burning tool. If you want to do wood graining, that is cool because it gives the foam a neat texture and grooves that aren't all the same size.

You're just going to casually announce a new branded colour scheme without ANY talk of the significance to you?? 😂 The shield turned out so good!! ahhh this is so cool! I made a tower sheild similar to this years ago out of eva foam. Something I would love to see is your take on a larp safe Crossbow with foam. I know you've made a really nice one in the past with wood that was pretty neat. In most cases wooden ones aren't safe for larp but I would be super interested in what you could come up with but in foam. Keep up the great work.

Oh man king, I’m coming out of my lurker hole for a HOT contact cement tips. I’m a full time LARP and cosplay maker, and in my “free” time at events for the last couple years I’ve been making shoes as practice for leather fantasy boots. After my first pair or two, I found a magical concoction that has forever replaced contact cement. The stuff is called Aquilium 315. It is water based so there’s pretty much zero fumes (I use it in my living room even 😱). It’s the same hold I get from stinky cancer contact cement as it’s made to hold on shoe soles while you wander in them day after day. It’s even water proof as far as I can tell, I’ve used it to patch a lot of my linen shirts and heavy cotton pants that wear out constant wear at events. Actual life changer, using that hoop inside without a mask and not being afraid of it touching my skin is a real game changer. Hope you can get your hands on some and try it out!
@Johny_5
@Johny_5 9 месяцев назад
Ooh! That says it actually works on PU! I've cast flexible PU for my boot soles, but I keep having adhesion issues with the things I've tried so far. The "proper" neoprene shoe/boot contact adhesive gets close but doesn't handle stretch well enough. I've ended up resorting to 5-minute Liquid Nails construction adhesive but it expands and bubbles aplenty, though the adhesion is great. I've bookmarked the Aquilium 315 for next time I'm doing something like this - thanks for the recommendation!

If you don't have access to plasty dip or other flexible base coat, you can always mix white glue, water and some acrylic paint to make a cheap alternative. It's not perfect, but is works pretty well. You can also use it without paint as a finishing layer to protect your paint job (but it will give it a shiny-ish look, that might not work for what you wanna do. Baby powder is useful to get rid of the shine, but works a bit too well)

A good alternative for beginners is a large plastic container lid, most lids have a shallow region in the middle that you're gonna wanna put a few layers of cardboard in that way your arm doesn't feel 100% of every impact it takes, you can use duct tape as customization and straps, and if you preserve the clips you can use the shield as a lid and put your larp stuff in the container.
@serfington3137

You did a wonderful job on this! Not that I have any room to talk really, but one thing you might want to consider for your next one is adding some sort of hard rubber or plastic material ( think a spool shape) for the holes that the strap goes through to prevent them from cutting into the foam. Probably not a big deal unless you're into heavier combat larps but definitely an easy way to make it last longer and makes it easier to replace the straps.
@serfington3137
@serfington3137 9 месяцев назад
I should clarify, This is to help with the inside of the holes since the leather strap moving around can work a lot like a rasp, especially if the foam gets wet and dries out.

Made a LARP shield a few months ago too. Base and fomework was the same as yours but i used latex milk mixed with acryllic paint for coloring and isoflex (similar product also for sealing roofs) for sealing. It survived LARP and heavy impact extremely well. But it also needs something to relove the tackyness. I used talcum powder for this since I didnt mind dulling the colors a bit and liked the smooth finish. But silicon oil spray works as well and keeps the colors mostly intact with the drawback of beeing a bit oily to the touch

Nice work! I've made a round shield myself using a plastic hubcap as a core, it even comes with holes for your straps ;) And instead of plastidip I used hexflex paints, it's like a rubbery acrylic and they have a transparent paint that works as both primer _and_ clearcoat!

@drvenisporet3395

Great video, as always. I jut thought to add a method for making shield straps that might be helpful to people making their own shields. I saw this method used by some people in buhurt circles and they claim that it's the best method for a shield that's going to get hit and abused a lot (and if buhurt doesn't qualify then I don't know what does). Anyway, it's made kinda like the top strap that Cl3ver made here but instead of the metal rings being attached to the handle the rings are attached to the shield directly on both ends of the strap and the same thing is done to the bottom strap. A lot of times people don't even use leather but just permanently fix them to the shield and then use rope to connect the two rings and make a handle that way. Maybe this method doesn't look glorious as the leather stuff, but functionally it has more benefits: you can easily tie and untie a rope to configure the strap size to whatever fits you best, you save time and money because you don't have to work and deal with leather, you don't need to make any belts and buckles, you don't need to maintain the leather and finaly, if it breaks it's much easier to replace a piece of rope than to replace a leather strap. Hopefully someone finds this method useful and levels up their shield-making skill 😉

Just a quick comment about having the Tree gold on silver (Skill Tree Tree or on field argent) in terms of Heraldry. In basic Heraldic rules, a metal never goes on a metal. The gold on teal is fine, as metals can go with either colors or furs. This is oversimplified, of course, but it’s still the basis of the rules. I thought y’all would want to know! That being said, I think the shield turned out great! I can’t wait to try it myself! I just love your channel and watch every video as soon as possible! Keep up the exceptional work! Godspeed, Rev. I don't usually make things like this, but my one suggestion would be to reinforce the holes in the canvas a bit more by hand-sewing around the eyelet (I know it's not circular, but the same technique or a similar one I'm not aware of may be useful there). There may be a need for a curved needle with the way the shield was made, but it may be worth it. Anyway, the main reason to reinforce that area more is incase someone does decide to go punching things with the shield. That would be so funny to see as well.
@DH-xw6jp

The hand sewing technique you are thinking of is a button hole stitch, it's used for re-enforcing slits and oblong cuts.

For anyone copying this: beware of adding metallic acrylics on to foam. You need to check the copper content because it can eat the foam and won't last more than a couple of years, sometimes less. It can make the foam turn to goo and ruin other kit too.

For LARP and fantasy do what you want. But I just wanted to point out that from a historical point of view, that shield design would not be made of wooden boards with chunky grain. That style of shield would be a single piece of wood and the grain would be tight and all but invisible once painted and probably covered in canvas anyway. Also real shields also didn't have metal rims, rims were typically rawhide. Though I have seen a few places saying later period shields did on occasion, but still very rarely, have metal rims. But I've never seen any period evidence for it... But for LARP and fantasy. Do what ever you like. Not here to bash on other peoples fun, just sharing my understanding of the historical side for anyone interested.
