Cut Bottles into Glasses - Cutting wine and beer bottles to make drinking glasses. Step-by-step tutorial on how I make glasses out of bottles. This is just my process and the way I like to cut bottles into glasses. * UPDATE* We've also published another new short update video showing a faster way to break the bottles by spinning them in the ice water.
See our latest short video update for a QUICKER WAY TO BREAK THE BOTTLES - After dipping the bottles in the hot water for 5 to 7 seconds, immediately immerse the bottle in the ice water and SPIN the bottle in the ice water (doesn't have to be fast, just a little spinning seems to make the score line cold enough to break). I recently started doing this and am getting perfect breaks and almost complete separation on the first dip into the ice water. I did 15 thick wine bottles yesterday and almost all broke after the first dip into the ice water with spinning. Several bottles completely separated in the ice water while spinning the bottle. None of the bottles broke badly. Just make sure you have lots of ice in your cold water container and that your hot water container is slightly simmering.
How-to repurpose wine and beer bottles by upcycling them into glasses or vases. Step-by-step instructions include everything from scoring the bottles and breaking them to sanding the edges smooth.
This video is kind of fast in order to keep it under 6 minutes. Just pause when you need to read something. Thanks for watching!

Thank you, Heather! I've actually done several Grey Goose bottles, and they've been my favorite so far (given how thick they are, they look really pretty). I did make a rather heavy score line on them. But the most important thing I've found for thick glass is that the temperature difference between the ice water and hot water needs to be significant. When doing thick glass, I make sure I have lots of ice and the water is super cold. I also get the hot water slightly simmering. When I get low on ice, that tends to be when I've had problems breaking the thicker bottles. Hope this helps. Thanks for viewing my video!

James, Thanks for watching! I have changed my procedure since the video was posted (see the info section). I definitely need to do an update video. I now dip the bottles for 5 seconds in the hot water, then spin them in the cold ice water and they separate immediately. Takes about 10 seconds total per bottle. I've found that to be much faster now. Before coming up with the procedure I use, I went through so many ways of trying to break the bottles. Leaving them in the hot water for long periods actually caused the bottles to break badly (ie the bottoms would just come off if there was a seam, etc). Thanks again for watching! :)

Great video! You helped me speed up my process greatly!I had an elaborate setup for sanding, using my slow wet grinder, and it would take only slightly less time than hand sanding! So using the higher rpm drill sander is a revelation, thanks!

I like seeing the process all the way through, especially appreciate the tips on fine-tuning. Please extend the duration of time you will allow the text to remain on the screen. I had trouble reading the text completely while also paying attention to what you’ve demonstrated. Maybe give it all a column to the left, White background with black to text? Easier to read. It can stay up while that procedure is taking place and the other 2/3 of the screen. Sometimes, I wished for a little better angle. Your video is among the ones I liked the best, and I like the way your project turned out. Thanks so much for filling these to me. I wanted to do this for a long time, But didn’t know how to get a great result!

I have had that issue before on really really thick bottles or bottles that have defects in the glass (hand blown, etc). One particular bottle I get asked to do a lot is a blue Mexican Tequila bottle that's just beautiful. But the glass is so thick that I usually get 1 out of about 20 to break correctly. My record has improved with the spinning in the ice water technique, but I still lose a lot. Thick Grey Goose bottles (or I even did a super thick Maker's Mark bottle once) seem to break really well. Sorry I don't have more help! Good luck!

I was able to get many bottles to separate after just pouring freshly boiled water from an electric kettle over the perimeter, and then pouring a strong stream of cold water from the tap - in a single cycle. Still, I can almost never get them to separate evenly, but that's nothing a sander won't solve

Hey Holly, what speed do you have your large drill on when you're evening out the top of the glasses and what speed is it on when you're smoothing the outer and inner edges? Thanks!
@hollysoapmaking
@hollysoapmaking 9 лет назад
Thanks for watching my video! My drills don't really have a speed setting. When I lock them down to stay running, they just go at full speed. The cordless drill is actually too slow for me. Sometimes I'll just work on sanding all the glasses flat, then switch out the bits on my non-cordless drill and do the edges with it, too. Holly

+Holly Shelton (Kápia Méra Soap Co) Sweet thank you! two more questions, how long does a disk work before it gets clogged up since its not a wet sand? and the results you got was from just the 220 grit? nothing higher?
@hollysoapmaking
@hollysoapmaking 8 лет назад
+Josh Boggess I can usually do 2 glasses per disk. I did try a higher grit, but it seemed to remove too much glass and left the edges looking pitted. Maybe that's due to it being dry. A guy just posted a comment here who uses a great method for sanding (+EvilSpinner posted a link to his Dad's video about 2 days ago). I'm not sure how expensive his setup is, though...looks pretty simple.

Hello : ) Great video!!! when I sand my edges they turn out frosty. How do I (if possible) make them look nice and shiny again??
@hollysoapmaking
@hollysoapmaking 9 лет назад
Hi. Thank you for watching my video! I've actually never tried to shine the frosted edges. But I have read where other people used a very very fine steel wool to buff the frosted edge to look shiny again. I think I read that they used a 0000 steel wool maybe. The next set of bottles I break into glasses, I'll try to buff the edges back shiny again. It may be a while, but I'll update the video with that info if I figure it out. Thanks again! Holly

Hi Holly, What if the bottles don't crack all the way around the score? Do you keep going with the hot/cold water? I heard the cracking noise and stopped the hot/cold process, but I'm having trouble with the tapper, it's not continuing the crack like on your video. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
@hollysoapmaking
@hollysoapmaking 9 лет назад
Hi. Thanks for watching my video! Since I started spinning my bottles in the ice water (see my new note in the info section above), they seem to be breaking along the score line almost completely. After removing the bottle from the hot water, when you first dip the score line into the ice water, spin the bottle as best you can. Mine are breaking almost 99% now. But if the complete break doesn't happen, I will dip only until I get a break (even if just a short one). If I continue to dip the bottles after I get a small break line, I find that, more often than not, the break line runs up or down the bottle. So after I get a small break, I use the tapper to tap inside the bottle. You have to tap directly in front of your score line and make sure it's lined up well. Use a light overhead to see the break line, if that helps. Good luck and thanks again for watching!

@hollysoapmaking
@hollysoapmaking 7 лет назад
I've never tried that method. But it does look like it will produce a nice clean break almost every time. My method is probably only about 95 to 98% successful when I spin the bottle in the ice water. Sorry I can't be of more help. :) Thanks for watching.

Kapia Mera Soap Co I asume you saw the post? (If not I can link the somewhat vague steps) I dont really have the specialized tools you use, as much as a better result that would produce. After seeing your video, Im not convinced the simpler one would work, too sudden break and may not be hot enough, thats why I ask. If you say it works, I trust your word
@hollysoapmaking
@hollysoapmaking 7 лет назад
I meant the "lighter fluid - cold water method" in general...I've seen several videos using that method and they seem to work. But I have no experience with that method and can't say for sure. Maybe the person who made the video could help. It also depends on the bottle you're trying to break...thickness, age, flaws, etc. I just like the hot water/cold water method...that's just what works for me. Thanks and good luck!
@texteel

Tim Shaw Hi. The tapper is a metal rod with rubber or plastic ends that comes with the G2 (Generation Green) Bottle Cutter. I have looked everywhere for just the tapper and have even tried to make myself one, but I had no luck. The only place I've found one is the G2 Bottle Cutter kit.
