How much can your Surfing improve from getting top level information and training at the wave pool?
If you've been following the vlog then you'll already have seen what is possible for on water riding progression in only 1 year of training, but if you're new to the channel and are curious as to the benefits of the wave pool then this channel is for you.
I've recently been getting some video analysis of my sessions from some Pro Surfers and Pro Level Coaches and been trying to work on the points they have given me.
In my humble opinion there are 2 key points to learning any skill and they are getting the right information and then going on out and trying to do what you've been told.
The list is ever growing but what has been amazing is that actually there has been some amazing progress and even for us normal surfers, learning some really important core fundamentals does have a massive impact on our Surfing.
If you are curious as to what the points are that have helped me progress and see a side by side comparison of the progress then this vlog is for you!

You’ve made so much progress! These videos are great for the everyday surfer whose never been comfy in big waves or gotten coaching growing up around people who’ve surfed forever. I had a pretty spooky experience getting caught on the inside last winter and my confidence was destroyed. I’ve been afraid in the ocean in small surf but don’t want to stop surfing. I think the wave pool might be a good way to regain confidence without fear of the ocean’s unpredictable-ness. Thanks for the inspiring and informational content! Catching a tube (of any size for even a second) is definitely on my bucket list and I was so stoked to see you get it.

Thanks for the comment and support. Wave pool seems to be a great gym to work on techniques. Sea 🌊 will always be the real thing, but as you can see from the videos, a middle aged average surfer can benefit a lot from training at the pool. Glad you’re enjoying the vlogs, thanks again :)

Of course privately it’s great, but the vlog isn’t a vanity piece, it’s just about sharing useful info that us normal people can benefit from

Exactly, video playback is essential. And spot on with everyday surfing. Just a regular bloke like 90% of the surfers out there ! Thanks for the support

Great video! I said it before, your surfing is improving a lot, but your videos are also improving (you could also put a video side by side from your first ones…). I’ am average joe surfer but I only surf in the ocean. Thanks for sharing the insights from the top coaches of your surfing, I am a surfer of the nineties, I never had a class, or a coach (there were no surf schools back then in Portugal), and the common surfer had no possible review of your own surfing and it’s mistakes. Your insights of hand positioning are very useful, as well as your thoughts on trunk rotation/chest vs arm rotation. My biggest progression jumps came from surftrips, surfing warm water pointbreaks with lots of time surfing on the wave face. I find surfing two times a day surfing in warm water for a few days, made me improve a lot (the wetsuit limits your movement range, as well as the cold water). Indonesia islands in the off season, like Lombok or Sumbawa, or the Maldives (not in august) have gentle, forgiving surf, with manageable crowds. If you are serious about your pop up, I believe it’s probably the best maneuver to work on dry land. I also struggle with the the pop up. I have a desk job and sometimes I can be away from the ocean for weeks. When I go on those surftrips I start to practice at home a couple weeks before, and I find it very helpful. My favorite youtube channels for learning are: @martindunn8017 : the first one and still one of the best @aprimoresurf8313: Yago’s Dora dad, only in Portuguese: check the cutback video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VDMmkqcapt0.html If you don’t mind the language barriers check this Japanese surf coaches videos, especially the first one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BDTMnqzY19M.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vF4aneTAoyc.html

Thanks for the reply! we are just the same as many surfers who started in the nineties but never had coaching or input. The coaching culture just didn't exist and review of your sessions wasn't possible. No big issue, didn't change the fun factor, just a different time. It makes total sense that your progression was greatest when on surf trips: lots of consistent surfing and accumulated time. I'd love to go to some of the places you mention, they must have been fantastic places to visit and surf. Will check out the RU-vid channels you mention, that's a big part of the purpose of the channel, to share decent info and places to find good technical info. Thanks again, great post :)

If you focus on steering the turn with your lead arm (left arm if regular) it will let you open your body and drive with your chest much more easily - if you just think about your chest leading alone you will only rotate so much before your lead arm counteracts it instinctively, therefore I find focusing on that arm, rather than the chest is much more beneficial. Opens up your whole torso into and throughout the turn. Thats the biggest mistake I see people make when trying to do cutbacks (lead arm in entirely wrong position/ preventing full turn motion) 👍

Love posts like this. Everyone has phrases or pointers that lead to breakthroughs so thanks for sharing your thoughts. Ironically it's all been back arm but of late I've been thinking about the front arm a lot more, particularly as I'm starting to play with the final part of the turn. Thanks again for the share, really appreciate it!

@@jamesbayliss6794 anytime we are at the wave, happy to meet and chat. Getting the info is a tricky one. It’s really hard as there are lots of trends, bad info and everyone has opinion. Certainly not “my” info but some of the stuff I’ve been finding from pros and good coaches have been game changing. It’s like the difference between having a bad session and then someone helping you with just a small detail and suddenly it clicks and the session is then good.

Thanks mate. Unfortunately I don’t get in the sea that much. Would love to but I’m just based in a city. Ironically it is faster for me to fly to the Canary Islands then drive to Cornwall or Devon to surf. Go figure.

That’s a tricky one to answer. To get to the level you see in this video or overall?

@@averagejoe6355 I would say overall based on the wave settings. Thanks

@averagejoe6355 Месяц назад
@@nanay7701 It’s not that easy to say but I started with a very basic level of being able to catch waves on the advanced setting (wouldn’t catch them all) on a foamie then within a year I had done the first session on the barrel setting. I’d say at least 3-4 sessions a week. Are you a total beginner thinking of going to the wave pool or are you starting with some level of surfing ? What’s the context ?
@nanay7701
@nanay7701 Месяц назад
@@averagejoe6355 thanks, not a total beginner. Waikiki or Intermediate wave current level. Just curious to know how regularly you have to go to develop as I know if you are an infrequent surfer, it takes a while to re-orientate yourself.

Do you recommend any of the advanced coaches at The Wave?

@averagejoe6355 11 месяцев назад
The Wave is starting to make a lot of changes. New management seem good. I haven’t personally used any of the local / wave coaches and don’t know which members of staff are doing it. That said, the staff (unsurprisingly) are surf nuts and would be helpful.

out of curiosity, what board are you using? as you may know there's a tradeoff between easy paddling vs manoeuvrability, i'm sure the guy at 5:33 won't be able to pull that turn with your current board, have you tried his once? my 2 cents, kudos to your progress though!
@averagejoe6355
@averagejoe6355 11 месяцев назад
Indeed. More rocker = more displacement of water / snow shovel / pushing water out for be way. Flatter boards less coefficient of drag / pushing water out of the way. Board choice is a black hole and an internet favourite. But staying open minded and enjoying discussions / people’s input is right up my street, so please share more thoughts, I’m interested to hear your opinion
@dncrht
@dncrht 11 месяцев назад
@@averagejoe6355 I encourage you to try a smaller board, like 8 litres less, a radical departure from your current one. You'll immediately notice the difference for good and for bad, and you'll see what you're lacking and what you need to focus on. Maybe try it in the sea, so "missing waves" does not feel like burning money. Make up the lack of flotation with more intense paddling, you'll spend more energy and your sessions won't last more than 1 hour but eventually you'll build up muscle. I believe that if you're after turns you must get a turning board, not a "distance covering" board.
@averagejoe6355
@averagejoe6355 11 месяцев назад
@@dncrht wow, I was not expecting that 😂 Normally it’s the opposite and rather annoying argument, foam is you friend (true), Jamie O’Brien surfs pipe on a foamie (also true), and classic arguments such as you’re not good enough or have the right to be surfing board “x” at your level….. basically all emotional and virtuous signalling messages !
@averagejoe6355
@averagejoe6355 11 месяцев назад
@@dncrht these opinions are actually very interesting because you’re starting to touch upon what type of a surfing a person wants to do, what they are currently able to do and even that there are different types of surfing. 6-12 pocket surfing with a pointy board and lots of rocker is great for a comp surfer but clearly not great for someone who isn’t able to stay on rail and move between them. And conversely having a board built for speed and distance isn’t going to work for that comp surfer Think there are some super interesting points in that last message. Only caveat is that going with a smaller board sucks in the sea IMHO. I need to get around the break, build up the pictures and responses, and just focus on catching waves vs what I can do on them. I’m really that incapable in the sea….. But perhaps that is also supported by your comments around short durations of session to start with until the muscles are there….. 😂
@dncrht
@dncrht 11 месяцев назад
@@averagejoe6355 adding foam helps to learn, but once you pass the basics, decreasing foam is actually helpful. Notice how JOB can use a 8ft foamie in Pipeline, but he would resort to the 6ft thruster for competitions. He sells fun, foamies are fun, but Pipeline on a foamie is a stunt he can pull, not everyone. In any case, you need to try different boards to find the one that matches your style and goals, and that takes time. Maybe a fish for wide turns is your thing, maybe you have potential for roundhouse cutbacks, but you won't know unless you try! And you got the basics, so it might be the time for that. I'll be watching 👀😀
