They're not exactly hunted except by other animals especially dogs, many are hit by cars and trucks. But their biggest enemy is the govts who allow developers to wipe out their habitats. I guess they don't pay taxes or vote so they have to go, a very sad situation.

I held a koala once when I was around 12 yrs old or maybe younger and it was the neatest experience. I love how low key Johnny Carson is with the koala and gentle.

Johnny is so real and contemplative in front of a camera. He knows when to make a joke and when just letting things happen on their own is entertainment enough for the viewer. NO ONE...not Leno, Fallon, Colbert, Letterman, Kimmel or Conan are capable of doing this kind of human and animal interest segment without trying to fight for the spotlight with some stupid comment or Joke. Late night television took an irreplaceble hit when Carson retired. I retired from watching Late night talk shows with him.

Joan Embery was one of the reasons I loved tuning into Johnny Carson late at night. She really takes care of herself and is so very poised. The koala is very cute also!

They're actually constantly drunk on eucalyptus leaves. That's why they are slow and drowsy. They are quite bulky to hold too. Heavier than they look. But oh so cute!

Bingo Bongo Apparently we are both wrong. It's a common 'myth' they get drunk but it isn't true, and it is not a narcotic either. Read up about it. Here's an excerpt: "Some people think that koalas sleep a lot because they get drunk on the eucalyptus oil in gum leaves. That's not true! Koalas sleep or rest for up to 22 hours each day because their bodies need a lot of energy to digest the gum leaves and when they are sleeping they save energy."

Continuing my comment above: Joan is also an environmentalist and an award winning equestrian. She has received a great deal of recognition and multiple honors over the years of her career. Joan was always a ray of sunshine and goodness on The Tonight Show. Johnny Carson admired and respected Joan a great deal, and clearly he loved sharing the stage with the many fabulous animals Joan brought with her. I was lucky enough to have watched Johnny interact with Joan and the zoo’s animals on many occasions. I’m grateful that RU-vid helps me relive those memories.

Ms. Embrey's appearances on the Tonight Show were always fun and educational, but if you pay attention you'll see that Mr. Carson ALWAYS interrupted her in mid-sentence to ask questions, or to show that he had some knowledge of the animal being presented. I always wanted to scream at him to let the woman speak already!

True. Conan O'Brian is even worse though. They can't seem to just shutup and let the handlers present the animal. They insist on cracking unfunny jokes constantly. Listen to Johnny go on and on about the koala's expression. What does he expect? Would he say that about a rabbit or a snake? Animals are generally expressionless.

When I used to watch Johnny Carson burst out every night from between those multi-colored curtains, I thought everything was right with the world. That was back when talk show hosts were apolitical, or at least parked their partisanship to one side to concentrate on diverting the public's attention away from the horrors of the world. Where has that unique and special talent gone?

Personally I liked the earlier (70's/80's?) Jim Fowler animal segments better...Jim was a bit more adventurous with the animals he would bring on...I remember he even brought a giant eagle on and had it flying to Johnny right on the stage....I still remember his segments on Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom...Jim did some crazy dangerous interactions with animals in the wild on that show.

The babies can't chew the tough leaves yet. And it's not straight poop, it's something else that the mother excretes for a certain time after the babies come out of the pouch. They have no other way of surviving.

Don't know why I thought about this when I saw it, but I remember one night Johnny Carson told the audience that Kokie, the Koala Bear, was found dead in his cage last night. They said that he committed suicide. Don't know why that is funny, but to me it was back then.

It still breaks my 💔 when I see these cuties and think back to those wildfires during Covid. I believe I read that close to a billion animals burned up. Not just koalas but all different kinds of animals. All those RU-vid vids of wonderful people stopping their cars to give an animal a drink from their own water bottle. 😢🙏

Fun fact: Koalas have smooth brains. This means that they are... err... dumb. This is apparent when feeding time comes, and they only eat the leaves from the branch, meaning that when you feed a koala, you have to bring the branch with you or else it won't eat it. Another fun fact: Koalas are marsupials. Herbivorous marsupials eat very tough plants, so each has a special kind of tooth to cope with this. What do koalas have? Their teeth wear down and then fall out. It's as if they evolved just to die.

I thought Johnny was being rude at first, but I’m pretty sure they were short on time. He keeps interrupting her and glancing awkwardly off to the side, probably at the producer. A shame because that was a very interesting segment and should have gone longer.
