Best of luck. Since you will likely be unable to use your fly tying equipment or materials after your wife finds out, may I suggest you donate them to a youth or other charity that teaches fly tying & fishing?
It is very satisfying to blend your own dubbing. I picked up a coffee grinder about a year ago...it is much easier than blending by hand. Thanks for sharing Mr McPhail
That was very useful, Davie... thank you. Part way through I was thinking I'd ask you what kinds of things you do with the cheek fur. Got that answered a little bit later. And thanks for that, too. Mike
Abs brilliant Davie 🙂 Hares mask has to be one of my fav dub materials. Would never hav thought to use a coffee grinder to mix it👌 . Could be handy to mix even synthetic dubbings aswell .
All these videos on dyeing and blending are excellent and quite necessary. I personally would LOVE to see how you dye some darning yarn that… fantastic… VENIARDS SUNBURST color that makes your flies pop with that rich golden color. L👍🎣👍
I love making my own we blends and it's that easy to do that sometimes I make very small blends that I just want for flies that I'm tying at that time, I like a squirrel one I done a few months ago from a road kill.
Hi Davie. Any chance you could do a video on preserving patches of feathers and furs? I’ve sourced a few birds from time to time but would like to know how to preserve the hide patches for the long term.
Any keen coffee fan will confirm that this type of cutter 'grinder' is the worst possible way to process decent coffee beans, however you brew it. They cannot produce the even sized particles needed for decent coffee. You get large lumps, fine dust, and everything between. If you use one, get a decent burr grinder for your coffee and use the cutter one for your dubbing instead. Its a win/win - your coffee will improve vastly and you will also have superb dubbing.
Thoroughly enjoyed that Davie!! I got myself one of those coffee grinders last year and it makes mixing the dubbing so much easier!! I'm looking some good quality fox squirrel dubbing, I love the leggy look it gives, any recommendations?. ATB Chris.
Hi Davie - another great video! With that being said, I would strongly suggest you improve the sound level of your voice as it's much too low on most of your recorded videos. You could use an inexpensive Lavalier mic or if you're recording on a DSLR or any other device that has an input for a 3.5mm jack use the Rode VideoMicro on-camera mic (around $55). One has to dramatically pump up the volume on your videos to hear what you're saying and it's a shame because it's mostly interesting 😁
Cheers Davie, do you mix different types of fur i.e. seals fur and hare, fox and rabbit? I find dubbing seals fur difficult to dub but when I mix it with rabbit fur I can dub the mix quite easily. Thanks for the video. Regards Jimf
Outstanding davie you never seize to amaze me is there a gadget in your house that you haven’t used for fly tying? All the best pal 🏴🏴🏴🏴👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Sam, I like seals fur but on the bigger flies I'll mix in the underfur from arctic fox tails especially the fibre close to the bottom of the tail as it is normally not very good for the flies I would use the fox for, it helps cover the body really quickly and saves using up the seals fur...I have also attached a link to Michael Frodins SS dubbing which I like to use as well..I'm glad you enjoyed the video.. All the very best Davie.. www.frodinflies.com/collections/sss/products/sss-dubbing
Thank for this video. I recently got a new blender for my wife, so I could use our old one for making dubbing. I haven’t needed to use it yet but expect to use it soon. By using the large scissors, are you able to cut close enough to the hide so you aren’t leaving hair behind? Are you using the large ones to avoid wearing out your tying scissors? Do you see any value in saving the whiskers for leg or tailing material?
Hi Flytyer1948, Many years ago I used to blend a lot of dubbings and I found the lager dress making scissors did a great job so I still use them as you saw in the video but if I need to use a smaller pair to get much closer than I would use them especially in small skins like mouse and mole..Yes I have used the whiskers on a few old patterns in collections that I have done in the past and they make great tails for dries.. All the very best Davie..
@@DavieMcPhail Followup to thank you & maybe give you a smile. I’m blending maybe the seventh round of hares mask dubbing. I like add some good pinches of matching or complimentary Antron yarns & some pinches of finely chopped Krystal Flash or similar flash material. The Antron addition is based on suggestions from Gary LaFontaine in a class I took with him in the 1990s. The amusing thing is while I’m happily using our old blender on a regular basis, my wife has yet to use the fancy, somewhat expensive new blender even once. Ah well, it made her happy, & if she’s happy, I’m happy & have a lot of dubbing. ;-) Be well. -Bob
Hi Bruce, I use Veniard dyes and as they are a wholesaler you should be able to find a shop near you that stocks their dyes but just incase you can't I have attached a link to the shop I bought mine from.www.fishingmegastore.com/fly-tying-dye/veniard-dyes-for-fly-tiers~480.html I'm glad you enjoyed the video... All the very best Davie
Again a nice video Davie. My wife might not be happy when she our 3 dogs naked, after using their fur for dubbing ;) You can do the same using Masonry cord or any other thin cord. Cut it into smale pieces and blend. That will give you cheap synthetic dubbing.
Hi David, I use a Krupps coffee blender to mix the dubbing though many moons ago I did use a food blender..I have attached a link to the one I use for you to see... @@DavieMcPhail Davie, thank you so much for the fast reply , i will be getting one of those , i was amazed how quickly it blended the dubbing and how nice it looked thank you , great videos , really help full . all the best , David.
Hi Robert, It's perfect for any type of fur, I have attached a link to another video I did for you to see and I was using seals fur...ATB Davie... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mqGckr7TrcE.html
Hi Neil, I have blended many a pine squirrel as it is a great dubbing to use on nymphs. I am also a great fan of the American red squirrel especially mixed into some hare's body fur...I'm glad you enjoyed the video.. All the very best Davie..
Morning Daniel, Sorry about the delay in getting back to you..I buy my peacock directly from Veniards in bulk packs of 100 extra large peacock feathers so that I can select the feathers I want, so if you know a shop that stocks their materials ask if they can order them for you.. All the very best Davie..
