Thanks, was wondering how to do this for a project of mine requiring 4 identical pieces like this; made a taper guide from some scrap strips of 3/4 plywood, adjusted it to match the line I wanted to cut, clamped, screwed -- presto, worked! I was cutting 3/4 ply; after aligning my cut-line with the saw, I made a mark on the taper guide to the end of my piece of wood to match my next piece to; then used masking-tape to tape the guide to my ply, I didn't want it shifting off of my mark.

Hello. Your approach sounds like a good one. If you wanted to improve the jig for accuracy and consistency you might want to attach some setup blocks in the appropriate positions, rather than using tape. But if you are careful, as it sounds like you were, you can achieve good results using tape and a careful setup process as well. Thanks Paul-Woodworkers Guild of America

I bought two of these jigs at estate sales. Both were set up differently. After using and more careful inspection, I realized the manufacturing set them up so you could use it to the right or left of the blade depending on which side your fence is on. I was cutting a table leg and the handle was set on the same side as the stop. It scared the shit out of me to have my hand that close to the blade. I realized I needed to move the handle to the fence side. Here's the thing though, if you go on line, you will find it being sold either way.

There are lots of ways to cut angles on the table saw. Your technique may work, but it’s hard to beat the accuracy that comes from a good miter gauge.

Thanks for the easy way! I think I remember enough trig to calculate the angle, but skipping that step is definitely more reliable. If ANYONE cares, If y is the distance the line moves towards or away from the fence over a distance x, tan(angle) = y/x So arc tangent ( y/x ) = angle Yay for my minor in math!

Why measure? Just sit your workpiece against the fence, rotate the taper guide 180° and sit it on top of the workpiece, also flush to the fence. Now you can open it up until it aligns with your pencil line and lock it. Job done.
@bandrada
@bandrada 8 лет назад
He needed to measure 90* from the fence to each end point of the pencil line (or two points equidistant from either end) to get a more precise transfer. That's why the cut is off at the end. I would have used a straight edge site the saw blade, also.

Will that work if the wood is alot longer than the guide. I guess the but of the material could be 2-3 ft off the table.
@samanderson7745
@samanderson7745 6 лет назад
You would probably be better served if you got a longer fence guide for a circular saw. Set it up so the saw is aligned with the line and make the cut with the circular saw instead of a table saw. Unless you have a long in feed table on the table saw. Even with that, for how short the guide is, tiny movements at the ends of the guide would be much more noticeable if the material you're cutting is several feet longer than it.

Why not put the work piece against the fence and flip the taper guide 180 degrees (the complimentary angle) and align the taper guide to the blade? This makes it perfect and requires no tape measurements where a mistake is likely.
@auxpower13
@auxpower13 4 года назад
To be clear, the taper guide would touch the blade and the other side would be lined up on your cut line. You have already done the measuring when you drew that line. Measuring another angle and then hoping they compliment or cancel each other out is circuitous at best.
@Wwgoa

Could you not just temporarily clamp a straight edge to the right hand side of the saw blabe then just line the cut line up with the line on the board instead of all the measuring?
@Wwgoa
@Wwgoa 7 месяцев назад
Sure, that would be another way to accomplish getting the blade aligned to the cut line. Be sure to unplug your saw for safety while you are doing that. Paul
@bmcgar
@bmcgar 7 лет назад
Why not raise the blade, set a straightedge against the blade, line it up with the mark on the piece, then adjust the jig angle and fence to make the cut (lowering the blade, of course)? Am I missing something?
@Wwgoa
@Wwgoa 7 лет назад
Hi. That can work too, although it requires getting a straight edge (you probably already have a tape measure in your pocket), and you should unplug the saw before setting something against the blade, so it might take longer than what George is demonstrating here. But if it is quicker for you, then by all means use that approach.

@Wwgoa
@Wwgoa 5 лет назад
If you can't find a stock jig that will do it, you might have to build a simple jig for these cuts. If it only has to cut at one specific angle, the jig would be pretty straightforward to build. Just tack a cleat to a piece of plywood at the desired angle, and add some hold-down clamps such as these amzn.to/2J71ZPz Thanks Paul-Woodworkers Guild of America

I can do this in 5 seconds with NO measuring. 1. Move fence over to the right. 2. Place taper jig against fence. 3. Butt work piece against taper jig. 4. Place straight edge on pencil line on work piece and adjust jig so straight edge is also in line with tracks on table saw. 5. Move fence back to left to desired position It takes WAY longer the read what I just said than it does to do it. 5- 10 seconds max. Zero measuring.

Hello there. I say, wouldn't it be easier to butt the plank against the saw guide, then present your jig reversed (hinge on the far side). One branch against the saw guide too, and the second adjusted along your score line. This is called simply "reproducing an angle". Correct me if I'm wrong. Your jig is fine anyway, and thank you for posting.

Typical of guys like the bearded one with the glasses, he can do, but he can't talk. Here is one sentence that sums up what he is trying to do: "The pencil line that you draw on your board must feed as a straight line through the cutting blade of the table saw." Once you know that, you know exactly what you are doing with the taper jig. In fact, if the worker's fence is high enough, it is possible to lay the straight edge of the taper guide against the fence, & then, rotate the angle arm to the cut line. That will work 100% of the time. Now, here's a bonus tip: always remember that the largest width of the finished cut is away from the wood worker. Now, I think the video has an adequate explanation.
