as a hairdresser my only critique is: if you usually cut your own hair at home, you should get some good hair scissors, cause paper ones really facilitate the split ends to show up
I'm not sure if they'd qualify as good enough, but couple years ago I got a set of goody scissors from like target, those are unbelievably sharp, and definitely far better when my bangs got long (I have fairly curly hair so a wet cut vs dry appearance are 180 off, and it's fairly forgiving for minor bang discrepancies)
do you have any recommendations for basic hair scissors to buy? I tried to find some but got overwhelmed by not knowing which were genuinely alright quality for a reasonable price, cheap shitty ones or being forced to spend a ton on those recommended for actual hairdressers.
Actual professional hairdresser here, I love the message this video conveys. I would love to experiment that much with my hair, unfortunately I'm bald lol.
I think that the funniest thing about „Hair IS everything ANTHONY” speech from Fleabag is that it's existence is based on the fact that Claire is afraid of the societal pressure, her husband's opinion blah blah blah, but in the end she embraces it, stops „hiding” it behind the wig, and the pencil cut (as I like to call it) is the symbol of her not giving a damn about others, as she finally puts her own needs before everyone elses'.
I like how her hair went through all the decade style, starting from 30s then 40s, left out the 50s, jumped to 60s 70s 80s-90s and even the currently popular mullet was presented. very historical hair you have!
Karolina reminds me of my great grandmother. Her facial structure, body type, hair. And I mean this in the best way. My great grandmother was always my fashion icon growing up. So needless to say I love the haircut, it’s beautiful!
Deeply appreciate your philosophy on hair! When i was growing up, my family had no money for hair salons or anything like that. Fortunately, my parents had very permissive ideas about letting their daughter get free-spirited with the kitchen scissors. Did I have a lot of bad haircuts? Absolutely. Did i have fun and learn a new skill along the way? Definitely. It was worth the occasional "oh no what have I done" to experiment with my hair and learn not to worry too much about whether it was all done "correctly"! It grows back and no one worth your time is worrying about it.
I think I know why you don't find cutting your hair a big deal while a lot of people do, that's cause your hair grows super fast (for a lot of people regrowing bangs is something that can take well over a year). I also have fast growing hair and used to think cutting it was really no big deal, and then I started to care for my curls and now with the shrinkage I hate cutting even the ends 🤣
I was thinking that too, as someone with naturally curly hair which never looks long, I HATE cutting my hair because it looks like I lose so much. ( ・ᴗ・̥̥̥ )
I have curly hair too but right now I'm keeping it short and I've learned it grows about half an inch a month or so so I need a cut every few months to keep it at my desired length. Otherwise I end up looking like a Hanson brother really fast.
I don't have curls, I have straight hair and I've only had 'layers' and bob and straight-plain-hair, a dipdye in black and no other style. People say big curls would look cute on me, but it takes me ages to get used to something like that and I've just always been with the same hairstyle and the middle-parting, it'd be weird to suddenly do something different. Not to mention, my hair (my hairdresser refers to it as ribbon-hair) is so smooth that everything falls right out, from hairclips to pins or sunglasses, it doesn't stick. I do have wigs, that I like to wear to an event or a special occassion, that are curly or brightly coloured, like copper-red or blonde. But I always feel relieved to take them off again and recognise myself in the mirror. I would perhaps like to try an uneven (what is it called?) bob one day, one that's longer at the front. But not now, I'll save that for the future.
I also just cut all of my hair off! I now have shorter hair than I’ve ever had before, and I honestly love it. It surprises me how many people are so invested in me not “ruining” my hair. Like, I had long hair but it was looking absolutely tragic anyway so what am I ruining? Hair grows back, so why not experiment!

yess! also why is short hair automatically “ruined hair” and long hair, even when it’s severely damaged, frizzy and dry with split ends is considered better than healthy short? 😩
Yes I hate this! When I had hair down to my butt as a tween people freaked when I wanted it in an A-line bob to the point the hairdresser just... Wouldn't. Gave me shoulder length and refused to go any more. I looked awful too. I'm thinking about loping off my stupidly long hair but I know I will get these comments again (mostly from older people). But if it's so annoying that I just throw it in a bun every day then I ask WHAT'S THE POINT OF HAVING LONG HAIR?!?!? You're giving me courage 😁✂✂✂😁
As long you don't work in a job with certain requirements for clothing and hair (these are still existing) go for it. Your hair, your choice. Cut it, dye it, bleach it, do everything you wanna try.
It's annoying how invested people are in others hair. Through my life I've typically rotated between really short bobs, through the grow out, to really really long. I'm now on the other side of your experience where somehow having long hair makes you/you look immature. I'm now in my early 40s, ever since my mid 30s people hint or directly say I should get a 'more mature' haircut, i.e. anything but long, and were super thrilled a few years back when I got a Pulp Fiction bob. Now, I'm just enjoying having it super long like a hippie and ignoring the hints and comments. Here's to enjoying whatever makes ourselves and others feel good in themselves 🙌🏼
I stay most of the time at home and even with that my mom doesnt want me to "ruin my hair" by cutting it when literally nobody will see it??? Also short hair is easier to deal with you take less time washing it and drying it and you can just do a small ponytail easily
I am a full time hairstylist and I approve of this message! I always adore your hair Karolina! I love that you actually STYLE your hair- so many don't and I think you have much to teach others. Thank you thank you for your videos!
I came into this world with naturally curly hair so watching people put curls into their hair _on purpose_ is endlessly fascinating to me. I've been cutting my husband's and my own hair for probably about 15 or 20 years. These last eight years I've had my hair up in locks, so for the first time ever my hair is down to my waist. I'm planning on cutting it in early December. It's time, I can show you on the length where my parents were still alive. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
Hi there, I would recommened that you donate your cut hair, if it is long enough. They can make wigs out of it for people who would love to have a wig after illness or other reasons. Anyway, I totally feel your fascination. For myself, I also have curls and it is odd to watch this endless process. It reminds me, how my friends in teenage years once tried to straighten my hair at a sleep over party. They totally hated their straight results on me hahah Oh and greetings from Germany :)
@@Sternentigga I second that suggestion! For years I grew my hair, cut it, then donated it for that very purpose! Now I'm older, my hair isn't as thick, so I've stopped donating. My goal was to donate and ENTIRE wig (about 20 ponytails?).
@@Sternentigga I have a strand or two that I plan on keeping. Sentimental is as sentimental does. I hadn't thought of donation; thank you. I will definitely look into it. My hair is probably 2 or 3 feet long by now... And, Hello Germany. Love this weird little community of ours.
@@Sternentigga Just don't give it to locks of love, they throw away hair, and they actually charge their customers, it isn't free despite being donated free. My uncles little niece, they charged her 1000+ dollars for even a short wig.
@@stevezytveld6585 Just take a look into it and decide yourself if donation is possible for you. :) And I guess you will have beautiful hair after cutting it, too. Greetings and a nice week haha
MUA/hairstylist, I did cringe a but when I saw the giant shears, but I love the finished look on you. And I 100% agree, people get way to dramatic about haircuts, especially when it's not even their hair
I LOVE your no f's attitude towards hair and the gigantic scissors you used. Definitely a mood. I cut my hair short yesterday (by myself, as always) and it made me actually like it again.
For about two to three years, I had been growing out my hair trying to get it chest length. In that time, I got so protective of it, hated getting trims and spent way too much time making sure it looked okay. Finally, I had enough and decided to cut it short again. Since then, I've really started worrying less and less about it and just having fun. I've been cutting it myself all year and I'm having a blast. It's also the first time I've really enjoyed how a fresh haircut looks
I am honestly so over having long hair, you try to grow it out bc you think it will be fun and then it's like fully not worth it. You look gorgeous either way, so it really matters how you want to live with it! Just like me, you seem to like the practicality of styling shorter hair and I am HERE FOR IT 😊
This video and the video you just posted about beauty actually made me feel a lot better. Lately my socials are filled with hair serums, skin care routines and weight loss challenges and now recently face yoga. Aging, frizz, acne, fatness being things to be superstitious about like people hanging onions and sage outside their homes to shun away from. Seeing that you put a lot of effort into getting your perfect locks and remove normal amounts of frizz that everyone has, reminds me that behind every ounce of content is curation. Also thank you for allowing to see behind it in your instagram, videos etc. it’s refreshing. Even though I try not to internalize this constant barrage of cosmic cosmetic content, it’s hard not to!
People are allowed to want to look however they want. But yeah, it really gets annoying when only 1 specific type of attractiveness is shoved in your face 24/7
I respect your attitude to haircuts so much. I have long hair for the first time in 10 years, and I can feel how *precious* it is to other people. When I first shaved my hair into a double undercut, everyone needed to weigh in on how much they hated it. I had a haircut like that for about 6 years I think. It was great. I've shaved my entire head twice before and I'll do it again!!!! Muahaha. Your appearance doesn't belong to other people. Do what you want.
So funny seeing the vintage RU-vidrs I follow all spring for shorter hairstyles (Karolina, Rachel Maksy, etc.) right after they inspired me to grow mine out! I had chin-length or shorter hair for almost a decade, but seeing all of the cute vintage hairstyles with curlers and victory rolls convinced me to grow it out. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ At least we're all having fun!
As a hairdresser, I am very impressed by your point cutting with such large scissors. I love that you mention that hair should be fun. And, if all else fails, it will grow back. -Or you can get a wig.
Ugh, THANK YOU. I went from super long hair to shaved sides and a mohawk which 1. I love! And 2. I have wanted since before I even knew what it was called. But the stylist was really hesitant and kept asking me if I was sure they cut it way longer than I wanted and kept asking me if I was sure I wanted to go shorter.. like.. yes. I, a grown adult woman, know what the eff I want on my own damn head!! Also and this is not important for literally anyone but me, but my hair was so long it was giving me headaches and neck strain like lady, please, this is for my health!!
I understand the struggle! I was at a salon once and a client who was leaving saw me sitting in a chair and getting a haircut. She said something like "If I had hair like this I would not cut it ever". 🙄 I told this lady that the hair length is not worth the literal headache. The weight pulls the sculp that much.😬
1. This was soooo inspirational!! I put so much pressure on my haircuts (lots of childhood trauma related to it lol) 2. I LOVE your unsettled long hairs with bangs-so pretty. Of course love all your cool styles too 3. The 90s male actor was so accurate!!! 😂😂😂
After ages and ages of wanting to cut my hair into a pixie, this summer finally did it. BEST DECISION OF MY LIFE. I love my curly hair long, but having short flapper girl hair is way another level. I don't have expectations to let it grow yet because I'm having so much fun!
Not only is your hair styles so put together so is this video. It is effortlessly captivating and can serve as a 2022 recap and motivational for 2023. Hope you all have a good day.
Long hair, short hair, buzzcut - doesn't matter, you'll always be one of the most beautiful people on the planet, Karolina, because your beauty comes from your eyes, and eyes reflect soul.
as a person that i really attatched to their hair, i admire the courage, relief, freedom and fun that others have when they cut their hair, it looks awesome, you did a fantastic job
I found that cutting my own hair was only traumatic the first couple of times. After that, it is lovely to be able to cut my hair or trim my bangs/fringe whenever and not have to hassle with making a hairdressing appointment (and pay the co$ts, ha ha).
As an AVID proponent of "everyone looks absolutely amazing with short hair", I'm here to say that you look SO GOOD in this length! 💖💖💖 And to people wanting to cut their hair but don't dare, literally just go for it, as you said it'll just grow back if you let it, it's not the end of the world 💇♀️
Watching you brush out curls was a roller coaster. As someone with stick straight hair, I have no idea how you knew when to keep going and when to stop. You look fabulous! The shorter cut brings more attention to your cheekbones.
I think your hair always looks heckin cool. I love the mindset you have for hair; I’m similar, “it’s just hair, it’ll grow back. And if not? I’ll get some sick wigs”.
Morgan and Rachel cut their hair, and I loved seeing how they had fun with it. I'm glad to see you having fun with your hair. I prefer to see people having fun with their hair than trying to empower it with some societal expectation of "your hair is your identity and it's how I can tell you're you".
part of the reason why cutting your hair at home is better than at the hairdresser is that you can just do whatever you want. there's been times when i went to the hairdresser and they didnt want to cut my hair shorter because it wasn't feminine enough or because they were a fan of long hair (even when my hair was damaged af). i'm just gonna teach myself how to cut hair so i don't have to listen to such tomfoolery ahaha. and yeah we should all be more chill about hair and it's nice to try out new hairstyles. also your hair looks so good!!
How fun! Had a "my neck is killing me, my hair just wants to tangle up, and I'm bored at work... OH Hey! new pair of scissors, detangling spray and a comb!" day yesterday, and ended up chopping off bit over 10cm. Such a relief on the neck.
This just makes me want to chop my own hair again. There’s something so fun and thrilling and also empowering about cutting my own hair. I love your response to everyone’s input being pure rebellion. A true rock goddess.
You look gorgeous with the hairstyle. You unintentionally gave yourself a wolfcut mullet and that's quite difficult to do it. It suits you very much .☺️👌
Amazing to have such fast growing thick hair to play with. Cute no matter what you do! Can’t believe you cut your own hair so well with those giant scissors. Whoah! I’m not suggesting you need another thing to do, but with those shears, no sheep should be considered safe around you. Lol😂 Love you.
I’m glad you went with what made you happy. I liked your 2020 short hair. It was cute and you seemed to like it. I hope you continue to do what makes you happy whether it’s your hair cut or anything else.
Yeah girl! Cutting your own hair is so liberating and empowering, at least to me. I also did a dramatic haircut at the beginning of the year and I'm never going back. I loved my very long hair, but short hair is so freeing and easy to style.
Hairdresser here: if you wet-set your hair, it needs to dry completely before you take it down, or else the curls will fall. You can buy a dryer bonnet online to help dry it quicker.
I am also a professional hairstylist who specializes in U shaped vintage cuts! I also really appreciate your message that it is just hair and will grow back. 😊 I think you executed the cut well for someone without a professional background and doing it on yourself and it set beautifully! My only critique is that it looks like you are using fabric shears, and I think you would have more success using haircutting shears, since the fabric shears are quite large and probably harder to do that angle back with the U shape. Just a thought! 😉
The finally cut is middle aged 80s 90s hair like you said, which makes sense cause the it’s liked a relaxed 70s cut, this is exactly what my grandmas hair looked like in the 70s (which is fantastic)
not to spoil your excitement or anything, your hair looks gorgeous, and it's true that it does grow back, i just want to vent for a sec. since i got my last haircut in march, my hair grew back really slowly, uncharacteristically slowly for me, and i was scared that stress and depression i've experienced in the last 6 months contributed to that fact and that it would generally start growing back a lot slower since i'm rolling closer and closer thirty. and i was scared the style i wanted to try wouldn't fit me at all. but i was so unhappy with the way my hair looked for so long and i really didn't want to go back to the tried styles i've been wearing half of my life that last night i just took a pair of sheers and went for it. best. decision. of the month. i look much better and refreshed with the new look, so even if my hair doesn't grow back at the rate it used to do, i guess i got lucky and i'm happy i did it.
You look great, Karolina. Dramatic hair changes for the win! I've been keeping my hair short for the past several years, but I finally dyed it for the first time a few weeks ago. I was a little scared, but now I'm glad I have red tips.
I love this! Everyone should experiment with cutting their own hair, at least once! It's such a liberating/scary feeling having complete control over your own style. & Congrats, the haircut looks awesome :) But you wear all hairstyles well in my opinion lol
Just got my hair cut today. My hair stylist knows better now, she doesn't try to dry it she knows I'll set it with curlers. Also, she knows my cut is different than what she is normally asked for but there is no judgement and she and I joke about how I look like a 1994 skater boy without product or styling!
I have to wonder a little if the reason you feel less strongly about changing your hair is going off the timeline and the photos you showed your hair grows really fast! I think some people with slower growing hair are afraid of more dramatic changes because if would take several years to get it back to something they’re familiar with or a place where they can make a change whereas it seems like your hair grows fast enough in a couple of months you’d be back to a place where you could adjust/change it again. I’ve noticed that with people I know too.
Yeah my hair has long ago (like 10+ years) reached its terminal length in that the hair growth speed I have is too slow for it to get longer than it is now before its time for the individual hairs to fall out. I managed to get it to hip length, but I really wanted to have long hair. Like properly long hair. When I used to go to the hairdressers and told them I was growing out my hair so only wanted the very ends trimming to get the split ends, they'd often cut like 2 or 3 inches off! Which was more than a year's worth of growth so it would undo all the progress I'd made. So I stopped going. Now just trim split ends as and when I spot them. But since reducing the frequency I wash my hair, they've pretty much vanished. Nowadays I just wash my scalp once every 1 or 2 months and make sure to brush daily to distribute the natural oils through my hair. And I don't have to buy conditioner any more either. Partly I couldn't because the only brand that worked for me stopped making the product I needed (it was olive oil based conditioner which only used olive oil, all the others out there also use coconut/shea which makes my hair feel like straw). So for a couple of years I just applied olive oil mixed with lavender oil. Now I don't even have to bother with that. As long as I brush my hair daily it doesn't end up looking dry or oily.
thank you for saying this because I can't believe how much her hair grew in one year!! Mine would not grow that fast, that's for sure....maybe because I'm much older and it's dry too.
Bardzo pozytywna z ciebie duszyczka. Lubię oglądać twoje filmy, bo trafia do mnie twój humor, a także sposób w jaki przekazujesz informacje, nawet jeśli są to twoje przemyślenia na temat strzyżenia włosów
Gasp! Post-rollers and brushing is spectacular! Which is cool because I have curly-wavy hair also and don’t brush, as a rule, so of course I’m not going for that time period. You are so happening, Karolina!! PS: Maybe Santa will bring you some actual hair-cutting scissors!
I cut my own hair (with some help from my sister) for +/- 3 years now and I really can't imagine going back to the salon any time soon, lol. I keep my hair up most of the time anyway, so no special cut is needed and my life is so much better without looking at myself for 2h into these horrible truly HORRIBLE hair salon mirrors :P anyway - you look STUNNING with that final short hairstyle
my hatered for hair salons (especially small town ones that only know how to make 3 hairstyles) is so strong lmao, learning to cut hair at all is so useful and fun:)
One month ago i decided to go to the salon after 6 years of cutting and dying my hair by myself... I regret it everyday, i think i never going back to the salon
My hairdresser had a stroke in 2017 or 18 and was unable to cut hair. He had cut my hair for nearly twenty years and I was done with the salon after that. I cut my own hair, and my son's (razor for him), and I am good with it.
Yeah I hate going to salons because I just can't with the small talk they always do (I'm autistic and I do not understand why they want to talk about such banal things rather than something interesting) and they tend to forget that "I can't see without my glasses on" means exactly that. So many times they would move my glasses out of the way, whilst getting a different tool but wouldn't tell me they had done so and then they look at me weird when I'm fumbling around trying to feel where they've gone to and only then do they realise that I actually meant it. FFS. Even during the cut when they're asking me how its looking, if I like it and I would respond "I can not see it, so they'd move the mirror around and I would keep having to repeat "I CAN'T SEE WITHOUT MY GLASSES ON!" until blue in the face. And then I'd find out they'd cut my hair way shorter than I'd wanted. Like I wanted just the split ends off and they'd cut multiple inches off which for me and my slow growing hair was years worth of growth. They could never understand that I wanted to grow my hair long so that would mean take as little off as possible. So I stopped going and now just do a trim once a year of just a couple of mm off the ends to deal with any split ends. Just pull my ponytail round to the front and snip the split ends. Done. I don't have a fringe so don't have to bother with that either.
Haha the horrible mirrors, i know right? I hate going to the salon too, and on top of not being a nice experience, it is expensive. Now I have my mom cut my ends or a bit more every now and then and that's it, much easier and cheaper :D
The lip pursing you do when cutting your hair is the same as what I do when I play a difficult part on the violin 😁 my parents always let me know I was pulling faces after the concert, but during it, I have no idea 😁
"No one cares" That's actually true and it's super comforting to me to realize that people aren't actually getting that worked up by everything I do, I'm just insecure enough to think they are thinking about me all the time.
HOW does your hair grow so fast, tell us what you are eating!!!! Also amen to it's just hair not limbs, it's there for experimenting and it doesn't ACTUALLY hurt when you cut it off despite what some people might tell you XD
