9:31 If you imagine the stromatolite fossils on a much larger reef structure scale that's EXACTLY how most of the lace agate druse quartz formed in Missouri. Unfortunately the stromatolite fossils were dolomite and are gone now but silica filled all the voids and you can see molds of the fossil stromatolite structures on the back of some of my druse quartz pieces. Kind of like a fossil of a fossil. Did I mention I like stromatolite fossils... LOL I'll be quiet now... Great video Taylor. I really enjoyed it. The Mary Ellen Jasper is amazing!!!

Taylor, those are some absolutely stunning pieces!!! My favourite was definitely the last one! I can't wait to see some of the first specimens turned into cabochons. Question, is Mary-Ellen jasper unique to the US side of Lake Superior or would there be chances.of finding in on the Canadian side? I only ask because most of the Lake Superior Rock Identification books are based solely on what is found in the USA. Anyways, thank you for another great video. Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

The Mesabi BIF (Banded Iron Formation) which hosts the stromatolites, runs to the Northeast until it is cut off by the Duluth Igneous Complex. Then it appears again in the Boundary Waters N.P. as the Gunflint Formation. This runs up through Thunder Bay and curves back into the lake. The material he is collecting at the North Shore comes from the Gunflint Formation to the north. I did a trip about six years ago and collected stromatolites from west of Biwabic clear up across the border to Thunder Bay.
