Cutting the roof in half on the 1958 Ford Thunderbird 😵

We don't like the roof on this 1958 Ford Thunderbird. We want to modify it and pull the roof ahead 12" so that it resembles the 1955-1957 Thunderbirds. So the plan today is to cut it in half and remove the back half so that we can shorten it 12" 🚨

I saw one on line when looking at options for design. I searched Thunderbird customs, images and saw one. I didn’t like it as it made the car ugly, that’s personal taste. I am keen to see what Chad and Jolene do.

Me too! Will be awesome I’m sure. Only 26 more days and it will be done. Maybe it will be a lot less than this because he started with a complete car that just needed to be bolted together. Usually Chad starts with rusted junk so this one should be a breeze. I think Jolene would look great behind the wheel. How about a single stage solid color like red? Something easy to spray and still look great. Or whatever Jolene picks I’m sure will be wonderful.

Been subscribed & liking your channel for some time. I must say it is "so refreshing" to watch U2 at work with no "crappy background music" edited in. It is part of what makes this channel excellent - along with Chad's live banter whilst on the tools and Jolene's excellent camera work brings it all together as if me the viewer was actually in the workshop learning👍 I am into my 80's W126 Merc V8's & own 2 x SEC coupes & a 560SEL and my own home workshop with a hoist and do all the work myself including engine assembly & bodywork. Just in the middle of turning my double garage into a properly vented spraybooth as enjoy panel work & want to get good at spraying 2k as a DIY car enthusiast. Learn't a lot from watching your Chad on the tools and thank you both. Keep up the good work & only suggestion/hint Chad is to get Queen Jolene to join in on some of the entertaining banter versus remaining silent - haha

Love Chad's vision of mixing the 55-57, 2-seat, shorter, roof line on the longer car. Makes me wonder why Ford didn't offer both 2-seat and 4-seat versions back then. Jolene's camera work is impressively smooth with so much to cover in, out, and around such a long car, yet focuses so well on Chad's activity to let us see so much detail involved in the process. You two are the only ones I know with so much content and sharing it every day with a minimum of cut-outs and no fast-forward frames needed. The combination of Chad's talents for automotive artistry and shopwork efficiency with Jolene's talent for program management, direction and presentation makes for an epic RU-vid channel that surpasses any media network program of this nature because none of the networks have a program that offers this much EVERY, single day!

@i8ntnuts
@i8ntnuts Год назад
I think the 351W is about the worst choice anyone could make. This car came with a rebuilt 352 big block, style engine, and trans. That will bolt right in. It’s the engine that came out of the car. Chad doesn’t have a decent five speed trans to use, even if he wanted to. If he does have one, it’s probably out of an old Chevy and it’s a six cylinder box. The engine that came with the car has plenty of torque. If it’s not enough power for Jolene, the Tbird (1959?) also came with a whopping 460 ci motor from Detroit. Again, another bolt in job.

Chad when you use a reciprocating saw if the blade gaurd is up against the material being cut , metal or wood, the blade doesn't have a Tendency to jump around SO much and bend ! Hi Chad and Joleen greetings from Tipperary Ireland. I have been a fan of your work since Your Discovery days and admire your journey to becoming a better person and craftsman. Your visions of what you want and how to achieve it in life and work ethos inspires many people. I respect the fact you didn't flip this car for a quick buck like many would have done. I think the roof chop on this is going to improve your vision. My input would just to be maybe slant a small bit forward so not to look as flat at rear. Have a good weekend.

Hey Chad , i know you use the Reciprocating Saw a lot but i’m going to Sugest that you look at using a T Shank style Jig a saw at times. IMO Bosch makes the best but most of the other WellKnown ProfessionalTool Companies make good ones as Well they do have a Orbital Switch to get more Agressive on some Cuts but the benefit to you is it would give you more Controll over detailed Cuts and going around obstacles or radius Sheet metal another feature is the wide Variety of Blades that are available yes that Saw is a Woodworkers Tool so many of the blades are designed for Woodworking although they do make quite a few metal ones and other Specialty blades also almost any Bi Metal blade will go through Steel without any or much problems i myself ama retired Woodworker and i’ve cut a lot of Metals ,Plastics ,Tubing and Pipes they are hard to find now but i even have a set of Files and Rasps with the T Shanks i have use on many different Projects from Carving and Reaming out odd shaped metal areas once i used it to Remove Rusty Sheet metal areas around a Donor Conversion Van that had Window Frames and Gaskets that failed over time. i got a donor Van to make new Patch Panels and Welded those in then i reset the Windows into the new metal with new Seals and proper Sealants we got another 25 years out of what at one time looked like it should had been heading to the Scrapyard ! BTW the Donor was a old Work Truck that had a Blown motor ,very high Mileage ,No Rust and was super Cheap to purchase i sold all the Shelving and ToolBoxes from it for what i paid for the Van so it was Free basically my Van got a full Repaint it badly needed and i wound up with a nice Vehicle for a little money for some of my Time !

I was thinking the same thing as Highlands Outdoors suggestion about the power rear window mechanism, but I had in mind a sliding window from an early 60’s Mercury. I think it was a 1964 Mercury Montclair that had a power rear window. Also - at the point in today’s video where Chad is inside the car marking a straight line on the roof support - right after the “scraping off the poo-poo” moment, he is looking straight into the camera through his round glasses and reminds me of a wide-eyed Ralphie from A Christmas Story!

I wonder if in profile it is going to look like a pickup conversion. It did when I photoshopped it yesterday, and I cut it in approximately the same place that you did today. Which reminds me. I photoshopped the rear third of a 57 Chevy onto an image I took of a friends little Metropolitan one night, and posted it on a Trifive site. Made several guys mad because they thought I actually had cut up a real '57 body and welded it to the Metro. Then they were mad when they found out I had fooled them. LOL

Make the embossed door "missiles" into a faux air scoop (like a jet fighter)...bet that has not been done

I love the idea of moving the back 12" forward. I think putting fins in the space instead of round porthole style. Either way, Queen Jolene is going to look fantastic driving it.

This will be better than the Bugatti. When he’s done, it might even be the best custom car in the world. Chad is like an artistic magician. I can’t believe how straight a line he can cut. Even makes perfect cuts with the air arc. I never seen anybody draw a straight line with a marker before, but he can do it. Be sure to check out all the videos Chad has made

This might be his best one yet, maybe the best in the world who knows. Being that he’s starting with a complete car I hope it doesn’t take the whole 30 days before it’s on the road

It would be nice if you can use roof trim back on roof will look orignal but chadarized looks great be wild if you could make original back glass work.

Seeing it with the roof removed let me imagine the two seater style top you're going for. This is going to be badass!

Interesting, as the British would say. I like where this is headed. Jolene has waited longer than she should have to get a car to drive around in. Good show! (That has several translations)

My husband thinks you should cut 4" back on the window area and then add a small sail panel. :) He drew a picture, but I can't share it here.

Chad I have a question, before you cut the roof off,the windows are down,should you put the door windows up first before you weld the roof back up,what do the rear side windows look like do they go up on an angle,hate to see you weld it up then when do windows it don't line up,would like to see you address this and explain it to us.

Jolene....I know that Chad probably has his preference on the cutting discs; reciprocal saw blades; and those step drill bits that he uses. But I wonder if he has ever checked out those types of things, that are made/sold by Bad Dog Tools, a company out of Bristol, Rhode Island? No, I am not a salesman, nor do I have any affiliation with them. I'm just curious. Keep cutting, welding and grinding!

The roof shortening on this '58 is an excellent idea. A Continental spare tire mod would be a crazy addition as well 😁
