It's been decided... we're adding the port hole windows in the roof of the 1958 Thunderbird. The first step was to fabricate the framework out of 14 gauge metal now we need to cut the hole out of the roof and weld in the framework. We ran into some issues applying the port hole windows 😝

When you do the passenger side hole fills, try applying a coat hanger in the middle of the repair piece, feed the hanger through the hole from the inside so you can hold the piece from the outside while you apply the weld. No finger burns and your coat hanger is ready for the final fill. Rinse and repeat!

I thought the same but I was thinking just use the wire from the the welder, just weld it on the patch run a inch or two of wire out, cut it off. much like a drywaller would do to patch a hole

Cut a piece of coat hanger about 5>6" long. Tack it to the centre of the small metal cut. Pass the coathanger wire through the hole from inside to out and pull and hold the metal plate from the coat hanger stem. (Spinning plate on a stick)...🙂👍Good work though guys . Camera excellent...don't forget to let Fina in....😂👍👍

One idea would have been to weld a short piece of wire to the metal the stick it through the holes to weld them in. Sometimes you have to think outside the box.

My idea also but it’s hard to yell that through the tv. Coat hanger on the back side and place it from the inside, and maybe have Jolene tack it as you hold it. No more chicken fingers.

Love it except for the rear window and the porthole seem too different in size. The rear window looks too small (short) for the size of the porthole. You and Jolene do a wonderful job and I hope to keep watching more of your craftsmanship each and every day. Thank you both for what you do.

Man the chicken finger brought back memories! I once worked at an offroad truggie building shop, dude had just welded up an endcap on a tubular rock slider and I was tasked with doing the other side. Boss man shows me "look it's a fingers gap away from the body make it the same on the other side" he was wearing a glove when he did this as he had just been welding. Me not taking notice and the metal no longer red hot I put my bare ass finger in there only to realize it was probably over 1000 degrees still, instant blister that covered my entire fingertip! Lessons learned that day....😆😆🔥🔥

Next time make a slot across the hole. Weld a wire to the little patch. Slip the patch through the slot, andcthen pull it tight to the inner side of the hole and slot weld it. Then just grind off the wire and fill up the hole as you always do.

Maybe when you fill the holes on the other side, you could try sticking your coat hanger all the way through to the inside, and weld your patch to that, and pull it from the outside to plug the hole. Then you can use the hanger to hold the patch while you weld it up. Just a thought to save your fingers. :)

Good morning Jolene just a thought, I see on the Internet a full face protective mask. In maybe two or three colors. They show it being worn while doing drywall sanding and other uses. This might be good for you to where for protection while filming Chad grinding around the portholes etc. They should be easy to find on the net. I think the cost was around $12 to $15 dollars. Have a nice day . Tom at the NB-NS border.

Good points on the pitted chrome. I've seen a lot of people build a decent cat and skimp on so much such as proper screws bolts. I can see not affording chroming but they would also try to say its fine. I worked on the interior of a 51 Hudson rag top with the plaid interior. Guy a guy who restored the car got free storage in the shop for a couple years. He got his screws from his work which were completely wrong but they were cheap or free. He worked for the railway to so he was not starving. When time came to finally pay for the interior, he refused to pay for it. We started taking he interior out in retaliation and he finally paid. Stuff like this is why I got turned off from the car hobby. Then when you are willing to pay, the shops/mechanics.junkyards you go to see you coming and screw you over, had that happen to.

One thing that may have helped to plug the small holes would have been to take a small roll of the tape you have right there on the finder having the sticky side out. Put that on the end of a drill bit or something that would have fit through the hole on the back side. Stick the small piece of metal you were using to plug the hole on the end. Put it through from the inside line it up tack it in place the repeat for the rest of the holes and no burnt fingers.

Chad & Jolene hope you had a nice ride in the Vette today! Chad you gave new meaning to finger sandwiches today, a little dipping sauce and you are good to go! That looked like a painful sacrifice to make, could'nt you have welded the coat hanger or something to the back of the patches and held them in place while Jolene tacked them in? Either way nice work on the holes and the port hole and Jolene nice work on the video and the close ups of the issue with holding the patches. Chad when you mentioned the drinking and hitch hiking, when we were young in the summer in Michigan a friend and I used to just hitch hike around for something to do. I never got in trouble drinking and driving until in my late 20"s I moved from Illinois to Wisconsin where bars are really plentiful and I got charged with DUI more than once. They are misdemeanors in the US however Canada considers even one a felony so as much as I would have enjoyed attending the workshop that you had or even just visiting you and Canada as a felon I am not allowed in Canada so if they chose to check my driving record at the border I would be turned around and sent back. I think that is why you had people that ended up sending the kids instead of coming themselves as they had signed up to do!

To hold the little bits of metal in the tight holes, I would have used some kind of putty as a wedge to hold them in place from the inside, tac and then remove the putty. OR, maybe tac a line of coat hanger to the center of the small piece, push it through from the inside and then tac around the coat hanger using the coat hanger to pull it in place tight. Or of course everything would be easier with two people doing things, one in the car and one outside. Looks good though!
@rememberthis8795
@rememberthis8795 Год назад
Bad Chad, just a thought so you do not fry your fingers on the passenger side… what if you made your small natal ‘backer’ pieces and then welded a length of coat hanger to each piece. Then slide the coat hanger welded to the piece from the inside of the car so the backer is inside and the coat hanger is outside for you to grab with a gloved hand so you can pull the backer tight without getting roasted as you weld. Just a thought from a nobody that does not like burned fingers because they hurt.

Hi Chad and Jolene , Zack from USA 🇺🇸 on this video, I can't help myself but to say if it's of eny help future reference on a similar hard-to-get area for welding I like to say , that if it's hard to hold the metal size of a dime or nickel if you weld a clothes hanger wire in the middle on that nickel-sized metal and put the wire through the whole that you're going to plug up... hold it on the other side to tack welded then break off the clothes hanger wire.....

The upside to what he is doing IS that once he has all ( windows ) accounted for in the top , IF he decides to have the top of the door window , the top of the porthole and the top of the back window relatively close to the same height for uniformity. The back window frame can have the top cut out at the upper corners and moved up.... Or not really... it is up to them.

When I'm faced with the problem that Chad was with the finger burn . I take the welder and weld the wire to the patch part . Then I let out about 4 inches of wire then cut the wire and at that point feed the wire though the hole pulling the patch to the weld area . You can then use the wire to hold it in place while you tack the patch in place . Just how this old guy does it 😎✌️

A litle tip if you don't want to be fighting with those pieces of metal behind a hole: tack it with the welder to the welding wire, run the wire cut it and you will have a piece of wire on that plate to pull it through the hole, enabling to keep it in place and weld it 😊
@Joe_M-
@Joe_M- Год назад
On those little pieces of metal you should have tag welded a piece of coat hanger to the little piece of metal and then fed the coat hanger through hole from the back side and simply pulled metal to roof tight from the outside front. Then weld and melt coat hanger off. Rinse, wash and repeat for each one.

An easy way to delete holes like that is to hold a piece of graphite or copper behind the hole and just mig weld them shut . The graphite or copper won't stick to the welds. I think you can buy a copper backup tool with a handle at Harbor freight . I bought one there years ago . copper

hey if you zapped a piece of coat hanger on to the metal chunk you could feed the coat hanger threw the hole from the back and pull it toward you to hold the metal tight against the hole while you weld it and then just buzz it off with the grinder when you flush it off.

Chad: When you want to weld in a trim hole and there is a bigger hole behind for a socket access to the nut that holds the trim, cut a piece of metal that will fit thru the rear access hole and tack a piece of welding rod or coat hanger wire to the piece and feed it thru. You can pull out the wire and hold it while you weld the hole. Much easier and it prevents dropping the backing piece and burning your fingers. Speak from experience.

The bird is coming along nicely. I like your attitude of why buy when you can build. I was hoping you would use real port holes from a boat!! I can remember the hot rodders of the fifties and sixties stripped most of the chrome off their cars. The big three were creating huge piles of chrome in those days, and then bolting a car to it. Your story about being a professional hitch hiker brings to mind the summer I spent hitching & walking for the same reason. As they say "every saint has a past - every sinner has a future". I'm glad you worked your way past those holes, too bad you scorched your thumb and finger. Hope you enjoyed the day off getting chauffeured in the vette. Nice car but I like the oil truck better!

Chewing gum. Get some chewing gum wet and put it on the end of a stick to hold the metal piece to the inner body while you weld it. Burn the gum, not your finger. Then pull it off when you have welded the piece and move on to the next one. This also makes it easier to hold the piece when you use a stick long enough to reach into the car.

Chad, in the first few minutes, you were talking about, and showing us, the pitted emblems and trim pieces. And then you started talking about how much a person could possibly sell the finished car for. And that confused me a little, because I had thought that you intend to keep the car. Not resell it. But it also brought...to my mind at least... that many people who would be building their own hot rod, or mildly "customizing" their own car like this...They aren't doing it with the intention of "What can I eventually sell the car for?". Instead, they are building their car with the intention of keeping it for their own enjoyment. And yes, some would leave the pitted trim off. Others would pay to have it re-done. And yet others would either search swap meets looking for better pieces. Or buy "re-pop" pieces if a company sells them. Same with the door handles that you showed us. Surely you plan to do something with them?🤷‍♂️🤔

Some say the porthole is too big, for me it looks good. 😎👍 But if I burn a finger, 🔥 I stop everything and immediately go put my finger under the cold water tap, or take ice from the freezer, to stop the burn (and ease the pain). In case you can also pause the video for 5 min 😉

You know you can restore that smaller chrome yourself. You can sand and reolate it there in the shop with a battery charger and the right chemicals that you can make yourself. To learn go on RU-vid and you can find all sorts of sites on the subject.

You can weld a wire on the middle and then pull the wire to hold it in place while you weld.

To hold the little pieces, welder ground to patch, tak welder wire to piece lightly, take off ground, run out 4 inches or so of the wire with piece tacked on, cut off and instant handle you can break off easily!

A Chad. mart Campbell on your putting your metal in from the backside. Why couldn't you just use your wire from your welder? Put it through the hole and then you have something to hold on to so you won't burn your fingers.

This episode was even more painful to watch than usual. Usually he is good at the fab part, but watching him cut little pieces, drop them, re-cut, weld, burn himself, then almost screw himself by not checking being where he was cutting the porthole....yikes! There's easier ways to weld little holes up.

I see a theme in the cover pic of your video…. The round portholes mimic the round of the steering wheel to the round of the tires….. make the back window two round windows…. Tried to share the screen shot of what I mean but not sure how to upload a photo in the comments. Just a crazy idea.

Last time I had to weld a hole in a hole like that I super glued a stick to my patch as a handle, welded it and then popped the stick off. Felt like a genius for lil bit.

Attach a short piece of wire to front of patch piece, feed wire through from the back , hold in place by the wire while you tack it, much easier on the finger tips

Make a tringle to fit the hole and push the point through the hole and tack the point and then weld in the rest of the hole. Wouldn't that work? Or make the back piece bigger and hold it in place beside the hole with the magnet.

Before Chad showed the round porthole idea, I was thinking I would’ve gone custom, with a modified trapezoidal shape with rounded corners for the portholes. It’s obviously not a 56 or 57 and the second gen is funkadelic, so really make it one of a kind. JS

Hi Chad and jolene. if you hold a aluminum plate 1/4 inch plate or bar behind , you can weld directly to it and it will stick a little but wont weld , it will make filling the gaps much easier for you

Those holes you filled with the little square coins, all you had to do it drill holes in the center of each, pull a tiny wire through to hold it while your welding them in place. WAY to much effort was spent on that particular portion.
