Hey, thanks a million for the shout-out Paul :-) It's really a pleasure listening to the tones you pull from it. Your cool choices of notes sounded even bolder. If you haven't tried it yet, I found it was (to my taste) even better with an added gain stage after the Cuvave. Just an overdrive with no or little gain or a boost. You might not fancy it as much as I did, but It kind of compressed the tones from it more or controlled the wild, spitting tone a bit. PS! For what it's worth, I had a comment on my video of this pedal from someone that says he traced the PCBs on the pedal to be Dual NPN silicon transistors. Dunno if it's useful. He had some more details on it and you can check it in the comments section there if you like. BTW, as I understand it that usb port is just an alternative option for powering the pedal. Cheers, Thor :-)
Thanks for that info Thor, I will have a look at the comments on your video. And dam, I forgot to demo it with an overdrive like you did 🤣. I tried it and you’re right, it has a definite affect on the character. Anyway, it’s now firmly on my board, so I’m a happy man!
Paul, the sustain levels are superb on this pedal whatever it costs, fantastic playing as ever mate. Oh , just before I go, this is the story of the two fed up Edinburgh sewage workers, they were just going through the motions. Always look forward to the next one kid. Take care pal.
Coincidently DIY Guitar Pedal just released a video about this pedal. There is inconsistency with some pedals gating and others not due to a change in a resistance value from the factory. According to DIY this is a clone of the Zvex Woolley mammoth (minus the pot, which controls the gating and has been replaced with a set resistor). This can be remedied by adding a trim pot in place of the resistor but the board is super tiny. Most likely a new version of the pedal will not gate, so if it’s what your after it’s best to roll the dice on a used one.
Thanks George. Yes, I’ve done a little research and yes, it seems there’s a difference between the various Cuvave fuzzes…. I’m certainly happy with the one I have 😊
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Late reply, but I just wanted to say I have the later version that does not "velcro" the same way. What I found however was pushing it a little with an OD in front achieved the same effect without needing to mod it (I'll get around to it one day I'm sure)
Thank you Jeff, delighted you liked this aspect of my playing 😊. I’m certainly enjoying this wee fuzz. On a different note, your SS Overdrive shone brightly on my very recent pedalboard video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-of2w3ButwGg.html It continues to take pride of place on my A board. 👍
The breakup of the fuzz would certainly cause one to adjust their playing style. Reminds me a little of the Wayne Krantz - Why video here on RU-vid. He plays a ring modulator in a way I've never heard played before. And it gives you a sense of addressing different techniques to compliment the effect. By the way, the bassist in that vid is none other than the incomparable Anthony Jackson! Fun fact, Anthony was one of the first ever to use a phase shifter with a bass - it's featured on the O'Jays For The Love Of Money - a 1973 classic! Great playing as always Mr. Cook!
I've been using mine with the fuzz set all the way down and the tone and volume all the way up. Just adds a nice thick boost for leads, and seems to clean up better as well
Loved it!!! The playing, the Les Paul, the tone, just amazing!! Love how you can find joy even if the pedal simply cuts out! 🤣 Cheers Paul, thanks for sharing!
Thanks Krenar. Hope you’re not working too hard 😊. Make sure you set aside some guitar time, or your lovely new jazz guitar will start to feel neglected 🤘
Sweet sound... I love me some gated fuzz (that's what this is and why it doesn't clean up--the lower the volume the harder the gate hits it). Its definitely a silicon fuzz face clone. I have 3 or 4 fuzzes right now, and the one that comes the closest to this is the JHS Smilie, from his Legends of Fuzz series, which also has a gate. Its SUPER fun! What I am really itching for is a more tone-bender/zonk machine style fuzz... its a long wait, but I think I'm going for a DanDrive Secret Machine. It has a great bias control that will act like a gate when you want it to, but its more mid-focused and tone control (and pickup choice) responsive, so its a bit less of a one trick pony. Pete Honore has a great demo of it, and Mick from That Pedal Show has one too and its just amazing!
Thank you Paul, great playing and cool tones from your guitar and fuzz. BTW: after your Klon Clone video I purchased a cheapish pedal called Muslady Golden Horse. I think it's in the same price-range as the Cuvave-Fuzz. The Muslady Golden Horse has got so many positive reviews, so I had to try it. Yep it's really great, seem the same with your fuzz-pedal here. Enjoy and again thank you very much for the superb review & playing!
Thank you Steve, cheers for watching 👍. Yes, I’m really enjoying this fuzz. I’m learning so much about fuzzes from the comments coming in. It seems the broken spitty character of this fuzz is called “gated”. Anyway, I can certainly recommend this for that type of tone. And the price is great, it’s cheap as chips!. Fuzz !!!don't leave home with out it !!!!! Lovely stuff !!!!! Sounds just like a ripped speaker !!!! Nice !!! A pedal with character !!! And you say it's affordable?? That's great news !!! Steady the ship !!! I may have to indulge !!!! Have a good week lad. ....and when in doubt fuzz it out !!!! What a sound !!!! Steady as she goes !!!!!
Stunning as always Paul! I had to Google the pedal and cannot believe the price!! Have you tried this in your Katana? I'd be keen to hear your thoughts
If functions MUCH BETTER with a tube amp. I tried it with my katana. It just sound better with a tube amp. I mean it is ok with the katana. Just much nicer with a tube amp imho.
I bought to. I learned about this fuzz months ago. I watch the jhs youtube channel and josh had the guy from 60 cycle hum (think his name is ryan) anyhow ryan was showing what he calls his "aford-a-board" most expensive pedal on the board was a donner delay at $60 buck. That is where I saw the cuvave. I bought 2
I think that Velcro fuzz sound you were looking for is a tone bender type of sound. There are a lot of tone bender type fuzzes out there. Like the one from Fulltone called soul-bender and it cleans up as you roll the volume down.
em........nup😁 loved it at the start when you were playing the celtic type stuff, but when there's no backing track it grates on me. is there such a thing as a musical prude ? maybe that's me 🤔 i like musicality in sounds , probably why i prefer the normal type scales and not that scary stuff you play. the '52 LP sounded almost like you were playing slide, guess that's the flatwounds, would like to hear more of that. Always interesting stuff , we'll never get bored watching you :) thanks for posting as always, cheers mate 👍
Thank you Charlie. You know, you say the same things as my Dad…. My Dad and I often have conversations around my progressing towards the weirder stuff and more dissonant / jazz inspired licks etc… He likes things melodic and tasteful, like you do. But me? I feel I’m on a path, like I’m being led, and I’ve simply no choice but to follow. It’s extremely rewarding and it’s the only way I can avoid stagnating. But when I turn up with a headless guitar made from carbon fiber, and I start shredding death metal, you have my permission to shoot me 🤣
Fantastic video, Paul! Do you mind if I ask how you’re getting that orchestra type of tone in the background?? That would make a fantastic practice tool. Lovely LP my friend. Thanks for another great vid!
Thank you, that makes me smile 😊👍. Yes, I’ll put a link to the backing track in the description. In the meantime, here it is: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JQL159lVLIY.html
I should have said it's a Zvex Wooly Mammoth copy with a fixed resistor on the circuit board instead of the Zvex' "pinch" control pot. The Wooly Mammoth (and this copy) are basically a 2 transistor fuzz face circuit, the "pinch" control on the WM and the fixed resistor in the C lower the bias voltage on the 2nd transistor which causes the gating and the velcro sounds. The WM is the one to want, the C isn't gated any longer. The Zvex Mastatron is the same as the WM but with octaves and the Fuzz Factory has even more controls than both, it's kind of like fuzz face calculus-- you can actually dial it in to total failure. Knob twirlers love the Fuzz Factory. The Wooly Mammoth and your Tele would be relavatory...
Thanks Cole, cheers for watching! Yes, as regards my hobbies, thanks for your interest. Camping is the answer to your question. I love nature and I probably get up to the north highlands of Scotland around 10 times a year with my tent. I’ve been doing this all my life. I’ll just pitch up somewhere remote and go for walks and try and spot wildlife. Then back to the tent for a log fire and 2 glasses of wine. Happy times! I’m also strangely fascinated by bears - another life long interest. I’ve visited bear country on 2 solo trips in my younger days, once in ‘95 (British Columbia), and again in 2005 (Alaska). I hope to go back there some day 😊
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Nice! Speaking of travel, I’m hoping to finally visit England and Scotland in the next couple of years. When I finally make it to Scotland, I’ll be on the look out for you haha. Take it easy.
Some of the comments seem to imply gated fuzz is a result of a noise gate, when what you're hearing is not an actual gate but rather a "starved circuit" from the transistor operating in a bias range that causes it to sputter out...hence "gated fuzz" which is totally different than a regular gate. In my humble but totally adequate opinion that is. Nice playing!
Thanks Bill, glad you liked the playing 👍. Yeah, a staved circuit makes sense. I certainly seem to gravitate to that type of sputter when it comes to fuzz.
In this case, the gating effect is specific to the negative feedback loop. The resistance is greater than the typical 100K found in a Fuzz Face circuit. Once it gets to around 500K, it starts to sputter.
Excellent! For that price you just can’t go wrong. You should take a quick look at Josh (from JHS pedals) reacting to it….. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2-LaQgRVzwU.html. At 10:40 he just kinda sums it up beautifully 😊
Hey Paul, have you ever checked out ted greene? He was a big tele guy, tuned down with flat wounds. Beautiful jazz chord melody wizard. I know it might not be your preffered music but definitely worth giving his one album a listen to, starting with summertime I would suggest.
Hi Z.S. Actually, I’d never heard of Ted Greene until your comment. So I quickly watched a couple of things about him on RU-vid. Wow, yeah he can play! And yes, the sound of his flatwounds is very evident on that Tele. I’ll catch up and watch more over the coming days, thanks man 👍
Thanks JavaoftheLava. It’s actually something I stole from Arlen Roth’s tuition tapes back in the 80’s. And it’s been part of me ever since. Ultimately, Arlen might have stolen it from the likes of Albert Lee or Danny Gatton 😊
I'm sure it has nothing to do with the guitar or the player. 🤪😆 Actually, it does have a bit of the RealTube sound, but much deeper and more broken like you said. Of course the whole purpose of the fuzz is to reproduce a broken guitar cord in a consistent way. I like the falling off the way a dying battery does. Love the broken cone bouncing off the paper speaker effect like you just blew a Celestion. Lol I see you are really loving those flat wounds.🤙 Never mind the over-blown "Professional" look, it's not your style, besides how would you pull it off out camping?🤔 Cheers!👍👌🤙
🤣, you’re the second person to express that sentiment. Yes, it seems the name for fuzzes like this is “gated”. So whilst I’m a big fan of gated fuzz, it seems you might prefer something smoother, like a fuzz face.
Are you joining in Pink Floyd? Or any old prog-rock band? Haha... This fuzz is really good for sure. But you know, I read somewhere this is a digital fuzz. Impressive I say.
What the JHS PEDAL SHOW on youtube. Look for this fuzz on that show. Josh of jhs is joined by ryan of 60 cycle hum. And that look at this and other affordable pedals.
Hi Dan. Just watched the JHS video you suggested. Yeah, I enjoyed that, and it’s kinda reassuring to hear two very experienced pedal players rate the Cuvave so highly 😊
I have not heard one cutting out like your seems to do. Mine seems to clean up better than your. But when I first got it I thought it was malfunctioning. And then it was great. Beats me cool an cheap I got a backup.
Hey Paul, I love your videos. you play amazing and unique guitar, a huge inspiration for me, but this fuzz pedal kind of sounds ... broken. sorry can't understand your enthusiasm for this cheap pedal. i know it doesn't all have to be expensive, but it sounds like a defective cable. it would be great if you play a fuzz pedal, there are good ones that don't cost a lot. But this one is quite special ... anyway it's a matter of taste. Again: I love your channel (and your scottish accent! I was in your wonderful country two times.) Cheers from zurich switzerland
It doesn’t sound like broken fuzz, but like a certain type of fuzz. There are smooth fuzz pedals like the fuzz face, but there is also a type of fuzz pedal that has a sputtery, gated, ripping Velcro kind of sound due to the way the clipping circuits are biased. This is just that particular kind of fuzz pedal.
Thanks Stefano, delighted you like my playing. It’s still a thrill to read compliments like that 😊👍. As regards the fuzz….. yeah, I guess it’s just down to what appeals to the listener. It’s funny you use the word “broken” because that’s one of the adjectives used to describe certain fuzz circuits. I’ve watched other reviews for this pedal and they all have that character. I’m certainly having fun with it 😊
I guess that’s one of the consequences of buying a cheap pedal, the fuzz sound goes in and out and the fuzz doesn’t always work, but when I’d does it sounds amazing.
