Part 3 of my Crown Victoria to the F100 IFS install. I am in the middle of this install and in this episode I show how to accurately locate the CV IFS to the F100 frame using the CV's locating pins and some measurements from the F100's original twin I-beams. This is pretty detailed and may bore some of you, but if you are thinking about doing this or if you're already started, this may help you locate the front IFS accurately.
I got my weld plates for the rear trailing arms from Ed Ritchey - ritcheytrucksus...
Thanks for watching! Take care, Clay

That Tape measures "slop" at the end is the thickness of the hook, it is designed that way so you can take both "butt" and "pull" measures accurately... burning an inch is still good practice as you do not know (as you said) if wear and tear of the tape has introduced slop. Like your vids!

Clay, I know you made this video almost 2-years ago, but it is helping me out. I happen to be from the Dallas area (Lake Highlands and White Rock) and also reside in Virginia (Springfield area). I am converting a 1959, but your videos have been the most helpful so far. I notice you have not posted in a while, and hope you are making at least a little progress. Thanks much. James

James, thanks for checking in on me man... we are all good. Thankfully north of the Hurricane flooding. I've been in a long distance move and new job, but I now have my project moved to our new home here in TX. I will be starting up the series again soon. I've got some various updates in raw video and I'm compiling for #15 in the series now. Really nice to hear that the videos are helping you man, thanks for letting me know. Take care, Clay

when I built my 67 i just uses the 2 factory holes punched into the side of the frame. look at the center line marks you made and you will find holes punch equal on each side's on the vertical. The centerline of the wheels is an arbitrary point and as long as it is equal to the rear axle it will work fine. Super fast and easy. pinch holes in the frame for those pins. having done the swap myself, and selling around 70 of these subframes to people and doing a lot of talking..... just blow the holes for the bolts out with a torch rather than drilling. you can make up the irregularities with the welder and a bit of filling.

Great work, putting these together. With the cross member parallel front to back, does that give it 1.4 degrees camber? I am putting a CV in a '57 Ranchero, and remaking part of the frame/spring pocket area.
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 7 лет назад
Dave H - That's a good question. The rake of the frame in anyone's project can also affect the Camber a little + or - . On these F100s the frame is relatively flat at the sub-frame mounting surfaces. I would shoot for a flat ( parallel to the ground) when you get done modifying your frame. Let the CV sub frame take care of your camber, caster and toe-in of course.

Hello Clay. I've been watching your videos and I can tell you great job! Nice details shared on each one. Actually I'm writing just to know the reason of install Crown Victoria Suspension on front of the Truck. So, I would like to understand better. Nice project!!!
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 8 лет назад
+Felipe Garcia thanks for the compliments my friend. The main reason many of us are swapping in the CV front end are these; 1.) Modern (large) disk brakes, 2.) Independent A-arm type suspension, 3.) Rack and pinion Steering = more precise feel and less prone to slack. and 4.) it lowers the vehicle about 4.5-5". When you make this swap, you instantly get all the above. The only drawback in my opinion is that the CV is a fairly wide front-end. You have to use wheels with negative offset (center of wheel is more towards the outside). Hope this helps you and others who wonder why we do this mod.

Good job on the install videos! How much do you think the crown vic front end assembly weighs? I'm building a drag truck and am concerned about weight.
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 9 лет назад
+Gary S Boy, good question Gary. I would have to guess it would weigh in at about 200 lbs, but could be a little more or less. I moved it around and off my trailer with two dollies - one hooked under each spindle and two folks. We moved it okay using this method, but I eventually got some old wheels and tires so moving it around was easier like in the videos. Thanks for commenting and the for the complement. More coming soon. Clay

One thing to understand about finding the center line is that old suspension was worn out and the center line had moved so dont be surprised if its not exactly centered.
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 8 лет назад
+Firstbb Lastbb Agree, that was where I started, but I did measure back from the core support hole on both sides as well. I also went out and set a tire/wheel under the fender and moved it around until I was happy with the look when lowered; then measured to a spot on the fender, then transferred that to the frame via the cab accounting for a fender to cab fitment gap of 1/8". I think I got it pretty accurately where I want it. Thanks for watching and for the comment, take care, Clay

Do you know the difference between stock crown to the police interceptor p71 front suspension please
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 2 года назад
Between ‘03 and 2011 there are some differences, but the only difference in the front suspension between Police and Civilian Vic’s is the coil springs. Police have fewer coils and are stiffer/taller.

What I'm having trouble with on my '56 is the sway bar. On yours the sway bar linkage is straight up and down during setting of the sway bar. I noticed it wanted to go forward once you lifted the bar.... It might be different due to the frame on a '67 is wider(up and down) than a '56. If i put my sway bar as you did, it hits the steering arm, cutting down on my turning radius.....got any ideas??? thanks

I had a question regarding the upper cast iron supports that flip over onto the top of the frame. Mine seem to have a fair amount of play on the bolds that go in from front to back. Is this normal? I do not see any signs of wear in the holes of the cast iron supports. Maybe I am missing some bushings. Thanks for your great videos!Dave
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 7 лет назад
Dave H I've not bolted mine back in place yet, but will for final assembly. I do remember those bolts having a little room. If I recall correctly, the fit fore and aft was pretty good, but in and out towards the motor had some slack. I think when you get it all torqued in place you should be good. I will check and mention this in a future video where I reassemble those.
@baguiocitydreaming5063

Just wondering shouldn't there be a piece of steel welded to the outside of the frame to make it wider and fill in the gap you have now between the outside of the frame face and the inside of the aluminum cradle? I would think if this was a sliding fit it would support everything better.
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 7 лет назад
Not really, the fit on the police cruiser isn't that way either. It is a smaller gap but a gap none the less. The rigidity of the setup comes from the top pieces that also bolt down from the upper part of the towers to the top of the big bolts. Leaving those off and not engineering another solution to take that particular stress WILL lead to issues. Used as it was intended, and I'm sure engineered to the hilt by Ford, will work fine. Good question and I'm sure others have thought about this, but never asked.
@baguiocitydreaming5063
@baguiocitydreaming5063 7 лет назад
Thanks Texasknowhow, i'm thinking as thick of a casting as that aluminum cradle is it isn't going anywhere. Besides I am building a custom 2wd owners type jeep over here in the Philippines and it will weigh a lot less then your p/u or a police cruiser. Maybe 1,500 pounds? Over here we like to build two wheel drive copys of the WW II MB Jeep out of stainless or galvanized steel, they are alot of fun....think of them as a Philippine sports car.

What is the difference in installing trailing arms flat on frame vs. 35 dg. Angle? Which is better?
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 6 лет назад
I assume you are talking about the bushings on the ends of the trailing arms (radius arms) for the CV suspension. If so, you can install/mount them either way, but you must rotate the inner bushing such that the oval slots are parallel to the ground. In the CV frame they are mounted at the 35-45 deg angle, so if you want to lay that plate flat, you have to rotate the inner bushings. See my video in this series for more details on this very subject. Hope this helps, Clay
@oscarzambrano6539
@oscarzambrano6539 6 лет назад
Thanks Clay. That does help. I never understood why some were angled and others flat on the frame. I did see how you rotated the bushing

How does the crown vic ride height vary from the factory height? Is it lower? We have a 93 that we may want to attempted this swap on. But will need to do more research prior to committing.
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 7 лет назад
I've still not finished mine completely. No heavy engine and trans mounted yet so I can't give you actual ride height change from stock, but I can say that most say it lowers the truck about 2.5 - 3" and that is with the softer springs. The Police Interceptor springs are stiffer and hold up more weight so it may not drop so much. I was looking for a drop in the stance so I wanted to move to the softer CV springs that were in the civialian cars. My CV front suspension is from a PI so it will sit a little higher. Also it depends again on the weight of the motor and trans. I'm going back in with the original 352 FE Big Block and a manual Tremec TKO 5 speed trans. Sorry I couldn't answer this completely for you. Take care, Clay

Hey clay my name is Jason. I pulled some measurements off of a couple Factory holes to the Crown Vic front end and got it lined up really nice. But if you measure the wheelbase from front to back it says that the left hand side is off by like an inch but the right hand side is off by like 3 in , which is a major difference really but I was wondering can my rear end be off?
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 5 лет назад
Jason Burress - Yes the rear can be crooked on these trucks. Measure from the rearend to the back of the frame on both sides. Something is off.
@jasonburress8201
@jasonburress8201 5 лет назад
Clyde I just checked from the rear end to the frame on both sides and there are just two 16th off from each other. so then I double-checked the front end again and I'm still showing the same.

Do you know if a 1999 crown Vic will work with my 1965 f100
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 5 лет назад
Richard Neal - Only 03 and newer have the front clip that bolts in as full IFS unit. Older Panther platforms had welded in cross-members. Not easy to swap and not as good of an engineered product. Again, look around folks are swapping the 03-11 CV IFS into your truck. It fits, you just have to watch what wheels and tires you use or they can rub when you turn sharply.

There is a guy who did the whole frame swap on Face Book forum “Frame Swap Faction” by the name of John Blacklock. Look that project up. The truck looks to be low and he says it has enough clearance.

@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 5 лет назад
Da Joker - Not sure why you want to put truck upper control arms on a Vic; I’m not aware of any that fit that way. Most of us are just taking the whole Crown Vic front K-member (upper,lower, hubs, brakes, etc) as a complete unit and transplanting it to our trucks as is. I may have totally missed your question here. If so, please elaborate and I’ll try again to answer. Take care, Clay
