This is part 4 of a 2003 Crown Victoria Front suspension swap into a 1967 Ford F100 Pickup. I'm also swapping in a 2000 Ford Explorer rear-end on the same truck so watch for that video. In this video we explore and execute three different ways to change the position of the trailing arm bushings. These bushings need to be rotated such that their bolt slot is parallel to the ground when mounted. On the Crown Vic, the bushing plate mounts at an angle on the bottom of the vehicle in the general transmission tunnel location so the slot is tilted with respect to the mounting plate. If you leave these bushings in this orientation the alignment guys may not be able to set the proper Camber/Caster on your newly installed front end. So I hope this helps you understand what I'm talking about by seeing it and also helps you make a decision on how you want to make the change. I explore pressing the bushings out with a 20 ton press, cutting the factory welds on the outer barrel and rotating and re-welding and lastly cutting the outer barrel to allow the inner barrel to be turned and re-welding that cut.

Saw this in another video and really didn't understand what was going on. Thanks for going into more detail.

Hey clay. The 351w came out of a early thunderbird. It's now in my 77 f100. Let me tell u a funny story. I've watched your vedio a lot. My dad and I started the cv swap and it was easy for me to understand it and my dad scratched his head. I kept on telling him ,that's the way clay did it. Over and over again. He finally saw it your way. Chris

That's too funny man... I don't know everything, but some stuff I do pretty good. I'm very glad the videos have helped you guys get that done. That really makes my day! That 351 will really power your truck nicely. Post up some pics so we can see it man. Join one of the FaceBook pages that deals with these great trucks and then let me know when you post. Contact me through my web site www.Texasknowhow.com (look for a link at the top and follow that to contact me). Thanks again for the update, Clay

I am so envious how the Chevy and the Ford guys have nice and easy methods to rod their trucks. With a Dodge it's WAY more complicated than that...
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 7 лет назад
I know, the Dodge is not flat at the front crossmember area. But, you can notch it up to a flat position. There was a couple of Fast and Loud episodes that did a swept line Dodge. They addressed this issue. Thanks for watching man, appreciate it. Take care, Clay

On my '85 not only is the frame not flat in that area, but it's only 30.6" wide, before i knew that i was considering doing a CV swap as well. I am now in the process of grafting the front suspension components of a '05 Ram SRT-10 to my '85 D150 but it's tedious and so much stuff has to be considered to make it line up properly... but: 15" brakes! Keep up the good work, Alex

I got the bushings turned around welded and the brackets put on. I now have the front end on and I going to start with a 4 link rear end....moving right along....thanks for the video and help*

+BA Toler - Let me know what 4-link you end up going with... I'm considering the same setup in the back myself. I've even thought about bagging it using shockwaves in the front on the CV member. Glad the videos are helping you.

TexasKnowhow, I watched lots of videos where they did not rotate the trailing arm bushing. They just attached the plate to the frame and left it like that. I installed a 2003 Grand Marquis front end to my '56f100 all I need to do is attach the trailing arm and I was not aware that the bushing needed to be rotated. thanks for any feedback
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 8 лет назад
+BA Toler Glad it was helpful for you - yes you need to orient them as they were from the factory. So if you need the plate flat, you have to rotate the bushing slot to match.

Hey clay, ever thought about doing the IRS swap? I'm contemplating on it. Loving the build!

I've thought about it, but wanted to keep moving and get back on the road. Just looking at the evolvement to make that swap come out right, I decided not to do it this round. Maybe a future upgrade tho.

Great videos, thanks for sharing! Question about these bushing,,,,, In 2005, Ford changed the CV bushing hole size and the bolt/shaft size. What was the purpose of this change? Aftermarket bushings are not tapered, they are straight through oval shaped holes. Curious about these differences.
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 5 лет назад
You are welcome for the videos Mike. I'm not certain about the reasoning behind the bolt size change on these... I have an '03 sub-member (in the videos) and now another doner car that is an '06, but I've not taken the bushings off yet to see this difference. I bet some of the folks on CV Full Frame Swap or Frame Swap Faction on FB can shed some light on this topic...

Hey clay, just wanted to say that I'm a big fan of your cv swap. Watched your vedios a lot before working on my truck. Question I want to ask, what was the length of the motor mounts,and did you have any problems on the clearance of the steering rod to the front end?
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 7 лет назад
Thanks for the comments Christaphor. I haven't gotten to building the motor mounts, but they shouldn't be too long. I have sourced a rear sump oil pan so the engine won't hit the CV cross member quite as bad. The ones I'll build (and video) will be similar to those that folks are using which mount down to the CV in the intended points and interface with engine mounts via a cross bolt. The motor does sit a little to the passenger side normally (see the hump in the cab which is also offset) and should clear the CV steering column connection just fine. Hope to get a video out this fall on this; sorry for the long wait on progress on my end. Just made a major move of the family, job, all our stuff, etc... Take Care, Clay

Clay, what do you think about swapping trailing arm brackets and mounts L to R so the won't stick out past the frame, but rather the wider section to the inside,? This would negate the need for the external gusseting? Great video, keep the coming.

+Louis Peinado I'll look at it in the morning to see what I think... I've heard of others doing this. Stay tuned. C
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 8 лет назад
+Louis Peinado Okay, I swapped them around and yes they line up pretty good. A few things to consider though; 1.) you need to make this decision before rotating the bushings as they are left - right specific look at the rubber in there. The thick part of the rubber needs to be inboard of the trailing arm screw/stud. 2.) Also, you can't use the back bolt in the 1/4" plate due to it being directly under the back of the frame in this orientation. There is another hole towards the front you might could use, but it's close to the frame as well. 3.) I think I'll stay the first way (how I have it) and add the 45 deg. piece for super stability. It will work though and looks pretty clean. I'll talk through this option in the next video. Clay

If you just want the rubber out, couldn't you use a hole saw on a drill press ?

Hey Clay. I'm doing the same on my truck but I have also done the Mark viii is swap too. How did you mount the front stabilize bar? I don't have the factory measurements on the cv
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 8 лет назад
Edward, when you pull the sway bar mounts up under the frame make sure the connector rods (that mount at the wheel side) are as near verticle as you can get them. Then mark the frame for the bolt holes. When I did mine the front hole on the sway bar mount lined up with an existing hole on the frame. I only had to drill the rear mount holes.
@edwardpoff575
@edwardpoff575 8 лет назад
Ok thanks for the information and on the trailing arms when you cut and changed the bushing mounts does that effect anything with the cast or camber?
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 8 лет назад
+Edward Poff No, in fact that's why you need to keep the bushings in the same orientation as they were on the CV. So you have to rotate the bushing if you want the plate to be flat. The plates are at a 45 deg (or something like that) angle on the CV. Once all hooked up (see next video) you will see that the technician who aligns the vehicle will still be able to make adjustments to dial it in just like on the CV car.

Did you have any problems hooking up your sway bar? On my '56 if I hook up the sway bar It hits one of my steering linkages! Making my steering radius short. I am thinking about taking it off, as I don't seem to be able to come up with a solution. I have watched and sent messages to others that have done the CV swap on a '56 they have no answer??!!!!! any ideas?? Thanks**
