1:44 used to be a church, but me and my family lived in it for 10 years, my dad built the inner walls, floor and stairs to make it more 'housy', it was so beautiful, such a shame to have left it behind
beauful that was my name stephen powe i was born in cwmfelinfach in 8 new road my dad worked at nine mile point he was a pipe turner and my grandfather was a fireman at the pit aswell
Thank you Stephen. My Father was born in 14 New Road (the last house along the road) just up from where you were born. He was a winder in the colliery (East pit) until the pit closed down in the early 1960s. I lived in Melin Street until I left home for good in 1959. I still have a relation by marriage to an uncle who lives in New Road close to where you were born. Cwmfelinfach is so much nicer now the huge tip has gone (and the mine, although it provided so much work for local people in those days). All the best from me.
Hi Thanks for your comment. The song "Myfanwy" (My Dearest) is about the love of a poet for a young noblewoman from near Llangollen in the 13 hundreds. The choir is the Morriston Orpeus (near Swansea)
Now that first B&W photo is very interesting as it shows the Penllwyn tramroad snaking past Y Babell and on up above the Penllwyn area. The house where Islwyn's mother died, known as Green Meadow House was on the site of the present Blue Club, which,in fact used the original house to satart with . There is no school at the top of Mill St and no sign of the bridge which would be built later over that little valley at the top of Islwyn St. Melin St, Arthur St and William St had not been built at this point. Is that the start of Syndicate Terr at the bottom left and what is the large white house just above, which seems to be on the left of stanley St as it starts to climb? Could that be the original mill perhaps? It certainly seems to be in that sort of position on the old maps and would also account for Mill st getting its name.
Michael - thank you for commenting on the video I compiled some years ago in a sunny June. I found the first B&W photo in my Father's things when he died. We lived in Melin Street in a house he bought in 1945 when I was just 4 years old. it is a pity that it somewhat fuzzy. I went to Cwmfelinfach primary school and it certainly wasn't there in 1902. I remember the Blue Club accessed from Islwyn Street - but never went there - instead I went in the Haven on the Hill once or twice when I came back to Cwmfelinfach from my soft life in England. I have a book produced by the lady who used to live next door, This is a compendium of contributions from old folk from the area and makes interesting reading of their memories of the village, I agree that the old mill could well have been where you suggest, Thanks again for your interest from Peter Hutchings
Thanks for the positive comment. I was born in Caerleon and lived in Ponytmister until 4 years. Then Cwmfelinfach until 21 years. Since then - England!
