little cool fact about the C1: Koji Kondo used that laptop during the making of some of the classic SNES soundtracks of the time, like Super Mario World and Link to the Past. theres a picture of him composing with it on top of his Piano from the late 80s/early 90s, its really cool
Cool! I’ve seen that photo, but didn’t know about his usage of the C1 for composition of those amazing soundtracks. I’ll have to read up on that! Thanks for sharing :)
I always wanted a C1 computer. As a user of Sequencer Plus Gold it was ideal. Finally found a nice Toshiba Pentium 1 with a 4 port external midi interface.
That’s awesome! Sequencer Plus Gold is incredible! I really love the immediacy of the keyboard only navigation of the DOS based sequencers. Top notch find with that combo of Pentium 1 and midi interface.
It is possible to get midi-in compatible CX5Ms (with SFG05s?) or install a new EPROM into the SFG01 FM module and with some re-wiring it will take midi in. I did it to my Mk1. Worked a treat.
Paul Bartlett thanks for confirming that! I assumed that must be true swapping the SFG01 with SFG05 but the MKI that I have still won’t give me picture, so I couldn’t test it. Never heard about the EPROM upgrade nice work!
Sorry but the Information about mk1 is NOT correct: mk1 of the CX5M does NOT work with external MIDI. The Eprom does not understand Note On/Off. You Need to Upgrade to the sfg05 module manually by soldering the newer Eprom and exchanging to the Sfg05 module. The only thing which works with MIDI is to forward MIDI notes from the CX to the Fb01 and Dx7. What i dont know is, whether the CX5M understands SysEx or not.
@@thebrackett by the way - how did you recorded this video in classic 4:3 format and those nice vinage color effect ? and there is another question i have: since your three parts of this CX series contain the MSX2 and the MSX1 version, i am wondering if you would sell me the CX5M mk1 manual book?
@@marcelfrehse I got the VHS effects by using a VHS camcorder running into a digital capture card. Basically just treated the camcorder like a usb web camera and the 4:3 and the coloration comes with the glass and the sensors in the camera, so no hassle in post. For tracking FX, I'll often film a small bit of something on actual VHS tape, and then drop that small bit in when editing, so slight hassle in post. I'll get back to you on the CX5M manual. I might actually only have manuals for the Mk2, I'll have to look.
