It sounds more spectacular than it is. Cybernetics is about cause, effect and feedback to help you navigate through the realm of chaos. In modular, this is often translated to patching outputs back to inputs. However, this is not the full story about feedback systems. You'll also need to find a way to control it. In a simple system, you'd be tweaking the attenuators yourself. A true cybernetic system is a lot like a generative patch, but the difference is the ability to steer itself. To settle and find a balance. Todd Barton's Aleph patch is one of the great examples that come to mind.
This technique is also used in machine learning, the foundation of artificial intelligence. In this patch, I'll use Endorphin.es Autopilot in a new creative way. Since it's designed to settle at A440 so your VCO is in tune, you can also make it settle a chaotic system. While you can't 'tune' chaos, you can make it find a sweetspot. I'd like to call it the eye of the hurricane.

Another fantastic learning experience presented in a way that keeps one focused on the sound. Bravo! Thanks!

What is also fun is to feed a spring reverb with an LFO in the audio rate range & then patch it with a TZFM OSC. This allows you to play the sping reverb tonally with extremely cool sweet spots. There are endless possibilities & I love these WORLDS of drones, krells, feedback surfing and much more.

Thank you Todd! The Aleph patch is always somewhere in the back of my mind, and now I have a lot of Serge to explore it with. I am also interested in building a Blippoo with Serge DUSG, SSG/GTO and the VCFQ. So you're passively teaching me a lot of stuff lately :).

Wow, this is mad. I do feel lost, but it’s a nice ride… gotta go with the flow. Puns aside, I learned a couple of things and am curious how to aply this the the moular gear I have. Thank you for the inspiration. 😊

I am an expert tech of actual analog autopilots of 1950’s (vacuum tubes) to 1970’s (IC chips). This subject brings back memories & approve of the technique. I Have To Buy A Golden Autopilot! ROTFLOL!!!

Setting aside my customary Eno comparisons to say, I don't know why this viddy reminds me of those General Dynamics demos of the robot trying to carry on some task, while an operator messes with him with a push or a kick I suppose to gauge recovery response. Not that your manner is so violent, perhaps more like poking the Machine. Carry on, our way weird son 😊

Feedback is the main reason why I ended up in the modular world. I work with different techniques - selfpatching (in/outs - stacking different SFX modules & summing the outputs for feeding into the Matrix Mixer), auxsurfing with 19er mixing consoles or just using various mix modules in Eurorack-metier. I have the Mimic Module & it has a FEEDBACK WAY integrated in its circuit - so I use various types of noise, send them into a filter bank & then back into an aux path with extremely blatant HALL/REVERB. Then it goes on to the FLANGER HOAX from EHX. What comes out are organic WALGESÄNGE or underwater dinosaur sounds that I can sequence in a controlled way. Just by simple auxsurfing I always get the desired dose of movement/animation I need.

Fantastic video, can we add in organismic? reminds me some of a Lyra in that you can kind of steer it, give it a sense of direction, work within the parameters it has, but ultimately there are parts of its patching that mean it will go its own way somewhat.

I guess the Lyra-8 is one of the ultimate examples of cybernetics, but with 8 OP cross FM it's a bit hard to 'steer'.

Oooh amen .. the bit of exploring that I've done with attenuvertors, (MI modules) .. their existence seeming so lame & useless, until patching into the attenuvertor's inputs. THAT'S been a gamechanger, .. whole new dimensions.

The DPOs pallet is endless Had one for 7 years now .. still not even close to finding its end point but I think a few times I flew close to the sun. I’ll FB u a couple things .. I think even u will be like wtf 😬.. I still am when I see the little clip.

Cool! In this video it was the first time I ever patched the final out back into the same VCO - after six years or so. It's a timeless piece of art, but also thanks to mr. Buchla.

There is way too much knob touching going on in this video (to be cybernetic I mean, of course).

Idk, I think human touch is welcome within a cybernetic assemblage. Don't let the machine have all the fun-become part of the machine as well 😁

This is just episode 1 and I wanted to keep the module count down. I also ran out of power headers in my little case :). Since it's about steersmanship I don't think you can rule out the human touch, but it's super fun to add something random and make it completely generative. I wish I added just two minutes to give it a try :).

@CinematicLaboratory Oh yeah I get it, I was just trying to be funny and a stupid smartass at the same time ! Every time I try to go the cybernetics route I end up using some LFOs, etc, so I get the fun and creativity available when mixing things up a little. It's hard to follow such a hard path ! Did you try on the Serge ? I'm sure it's awesome !

@@tebi1kurieudidon172 You got me worried I overlooked something, I am still new to this cybernetic field. A few days ago I thought it was about robots. As for the Serge, today I got a big box of stackables and my next Serge video will probably be about them. We're not used to 'banana patching' in eurorack. It's almost like making your case 3D :).
@tebi1kurieudidon172

@@CinematicLaboratory I don't think you overlooked anything. Cybernetics is about setting in place a system that regulate itself. Usually we don't use "traditional" sound sources, and no "traditional" way to make the patch move either, everything is supposed to come from the feedback patch. Like say a filter to a folder (non linearities there), out to a comparator, into the first filter. It's going to oscillate. Then you use an envelope follower so that for instance when it's too loud you lower the cutoff of the filter, etc. The feedback gives you the sound, and the feedback system itself gives you "data" that controls the feedback, it is autoregulating. Tha whole thing is about finding a very precise equilibrium between apparent chaos and apparent stillness, and what's fascinating about it is that you just set the rules and then hear it evolve on its own !
