UPS is for dirty power protection, overcome short power outages where the hydro company is able to overcome by doing some rerouting on the grid, and to shut down gracefully if the power stays out for say 1 minute.

New units have circuit boards and components that emit a slight burnt smell before you ever plug this in. As a technician I have run across many devices that may smell this way even when brand new and never powered up but be safe and normal for years. I find mine is very efficient, the booklet describes the high efficiency battery charger circuit that wastes very little power on standby. When I plugged in mine for the initial charge the case only had one barely warm spot after several hours, no warmer than human skin.
@cfldriven

Thank you for sharing your expertise. I agree these units run cool, although the battery run times on the packaging can be very misleading. Still I would recommend this type of device for protecting home electronics.

You can pimp these small UPS's by just getting a larger battery that won't fit in the case. Same cost for one with 3 times the capacity and an extension on the battery cables. Don't try this to enable use of larger appliances, but to extend service during outages with the recommended small loads. The software will not calibrate to the larger battery but you don't even need that geek stuff. Mine backs up my deluxe chair with 5 motors so I won't get stuck fully reclined, one LED table lamp and one laptop.
@cfldriven

Probably a lot cheaper solution then buying a higher capacity unit. I can see where in some situations your solution is worth trying. Thanks for sharing how you use it.

@popeyegordon
@popeyegordon Год назад
@@markglenn24 Any larger battery of the exact same chemistry type, typically sealed AGM lead acid gel cells, will have the exact same fully charged float voltage for standby and your UPS won't know the difference. It has one charge rate only so the big boy will charge slower but retain that longer reserve service if an extended outage happens. The added price for 3 or 4 times as much amp hours capacity is barely double the cost of the original battery and the bigger ones usually have a longer service life.
@markglenn24

@@markglenn24 1) remove the battery 2) figure out exactly what it is by reading the markings 3) buy a larger capacity version 4) extend the wires longer so they reach the bigger battery outside of the UPS case, assuming you can't make the existing wires reach. out of every unit i have seen the non backed up outlets do not have any surge protection what so ever on them. Also the rated max runtime is always a lie. you will never get anywhere close to that. This small unit you have here is actually really meant for simple things like running a router/modem. Id recommend using a power strip with surge protection before the UPS regardless what anyone tells you. just don't plug anything else into the strips.

You may want to consider the CYBERPOWER CST1500S UPS ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XveVObW70K4.html it offers surge protection on both the backed and non backed receptacles. In addition it provides full sine-wave output which is better for the plugged in electronics. I agree the rated times are just in their dreams, but in our case during an outage it will automatically shut down the workstation or give me enough time to complete a task before shutting down. It will replace the Cyberpower 650VA. While a surge protector strip should be good enough for your PS5 and tv screen, I like being able to run the router/wifi when we lose power and properly shut down what is is on. So if you want to be able to save your game when the lights go out, than something like the 650 should give you enough time to save and exit. Make sure it has full sine wave output and not simulated sine wave. Full is best for your electronic devices. If you are looking to complete the game the you may want to setup to something like 1500, which is full sine wave output.

Great video! That 315 minutes runtime is a bait and switch. I bought this for the frequent power outages we have in Puerto Rico. Charged it for 3 months, now the power is out, I plugged my laptop in, it lasted maybe 2 minutes. I can't have a generator in my condo, I was really looking for something to give me a couple hours on my laptop and phone. This is the 2nd time I wasted over $50 on a battery system thinking I understood from the box but I keep being fooled. Most external type batteries (power supplies for phones etc) won't ship to Puerto Rico. Any suggestions for a unit that will run a few items for a couple hours for me?
@cfldriven
@cfldriven Год назад
None of these ups will really work for you for hours of runtime, they are meant to safely power down and to protect from surges. I have a Vector ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V-bi-2hm-a0.html which can run my 22 cu ft refrig for over 6 hours. Plus it will charge your devices. It is not cheap but I have found it to be reliable and it holds a charge for many months. The only downside is this device is used after the power goes out as you can't leave it plugged like a ups and expect it to take over during the outage. The restriction on the shipping of goods to PR is a pure crime the US gov has failed to correct.

I have a Vector power station that can run a frig for over 6 hours, but provides no UPS or surge protection. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V-bi-2hm-a0.html

Yeah I have the old model 650VA and it's failed me 2x in the last 6 months. Had 2 separate `blips' in the house lights and both times the unit stopped feeding power to the devices. Is that dead battery behavior? If so this POS only gave me 18 months of service!

Well it can that the battery has died, rip, in which case check the warranty you maybe able to get free replacement. Or you are drawing too much power and it runs out of juice. Try something simple like one device and see if it keeps it running and for how long. As I say in the video you will not get a long run time unless you are just recharging your phone, these devices are meant to give you enuff power to safely shutdown in extended outage, but should ride out during a blip, unless it is overloaded.

@@cfldriven Thanks for this. Sadly the warranty expired but I can't verify on the website exactly how long that is. With my existing devices I was getting about 10 minutes, then suddenly the unit dies at the slightest blip. Time for a new/better unit! Cheers!

@@danh543 You have a choice of replacing the batteries and saving some money over a new unit or you can upgrade to something like the CyberPower CST1500S. Here is a video on it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XveVObW70K4.html . What I did was drop new batteries in my old unit and moved it to backing up the router and some small devices, and put the new unit with the workstation. Best of luck.

@@cfldriven Interesting that the website says the model SX650G does not have a replacement battery except with serial numbers starting with `RAF' I think I'll just recycle the thing and upgrade to a better solution. Thanks for your excellent information and responses!

@@danh543 As I recall, I purchased mine from another vendor. They are very common, but gotta make sure the connections will align with your unit. I generally replace the batteries once and then replace the unit after that. The current ups CST 1500S provides status readout panel and will run the workstation for almost half an hour. That gives me plenty of time to finish a render or casually close out applications. Good luck on your next UPS.

A drop in line voltage might cause it to start beeping. In my house running the microwave will cause my new one to start beeping.

cfldriven ok so the beeping has stopped but after using it for a few hours it just turns off and everything it’s connected to turns off, this has happened two times so far and my pc turned off and I have to go and press the power button on it for it to turn on. Do you have any idea why it’s doing this? I have the older version that you showed in the video. Plssss respond

@@brviins2577 This sounds more like the internal battery needs to be replaced. Being that it is the older model it may be better to buy a new unit with today's technology then to locate and buy a battery to get this oldie working again. I only consider replacing the battery once and then the next time send it off to the recycling center. I have also had older ups go bad and wasted money on getting replacement battery. Sorry I can't offer more. Good luck.

Thanks for sharing that info. I tend to replace the batteries twice before replacing the old unit. By that time the tech has improved and the ups has improved features.

While not for everyone, these come in handy if you live in an area that experiences power outages or fluctuations. They also protect computers against electrical surges which can damage electronics and data. Thank you for sharing and watching.

John, good idea except these were designed for charging lead acid batteries. The prob with lithium it is expensive compared to lead acid. I have a Vector Power Station powered by lithium and it is north of $600 and it is not a UPS. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V-bi-2hm-a0.html

Lithium needs a different charge circuit. Stay with the same battery chemistry but you can add an external much larger battery for longer outages. Lithium is kind of a waste of money for this application.

@@deeznuttz7980 The UPS has eight plugs all of which provide surge protection, only 4 provide battery back up. All battery powered plugs can be used at once as long as the power load drawn does not exceed the limit of the unit.

I Gave you a thumbs down because there is none that tells you how to or what to do incase . so mine was brand new and i charged it 9hrs and it would turn off i needed it for my boat to charge my phone or hear a bit of music on my radio and it would work for 2 min and it would start beeping and then it would turn off.

Elizabeth sorry the video didn't help you out, but it sounds like maybe you are using it for the wrong application. If you are looking for a power source to run your radio, phone while boating then you should look into portable power station. The UPS is meant to come on during a power disruption and depending on the load may only last a few minutes. I just did a video on the Cyberpower CST1500S, which has more power then the 650VA but it only ran my computer for twenty minutes. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XveVObW70K4.html Thank you for commenting.
