Cyberpunk 2077 was a game that, upon release, was a mild disappointment - to put it extremely lightly. CD Projekt Red was critically acclaimed and lauded as one of the development companies still left that made great games. Unfortunately this game was their biggest gaff ever and they’re probably still paying the price for it.
While they are busy recovering from that blunder as the game is being patched, something else of significant value has come from this game’s release. I’m talking, of course, about Cyberpunk Edgerunners, the anime set within the same world as the video game. Now I’ve never been a huge fan of the Cyberpunk sub-genre of Science Fiction, but this anime has catapulted it into a sub-genre I’m now genuinely enjoying.
But what really drew me in to this story and world is the amazing themes the series tries to wrestle with. And while I couldn’t really go over all of them in a single video, I do want to highlight some of my particular favourite themes that this series explores to some degree.

I used to love the whole cyberpunk genre, after reading Gibson's Cyberpunk novel. Nice to see you still branching out ever more.

I love cyberpunk (the genre), but (the anime) cyberpunk edgerunners didn't do much for me. I associate cyberpunk with slow burn philosophising and thought provoking commentaries on societal and technological development. But this cyberpunk (the anime.. man, what a silly name) was all flashy, sexualised, fast paced action. It was cool, and I enjoyed it, but it's doing a real disservice to a legendary literary genre by wildly misrepresenting it to a mainstream audience like that. If Cyberpunk (the anime) piqued your interest in Cyberpunk (the genre), Ghost in the Shell, Akira and Battle Angel Alita are three manga (with anime adaptations) that I feel did a much better job, with the former (GitS) doing a lot to define and codify the visual aesthetics of the whole genre.

As someone new to the whole genre, I totally get that this probably isn't the best representation of what cyberpunk has to offer. I'm definitely interested in learning more though!
