Can you guys please explain servicing/lubrication access and intervals, and reparability? It is very much a sealed black box. Bafang might be more "agricultural" but it is serviceable.
Would really love to see a video which is less of an overview and more about the detail, for example explaining the decisions around the intermediate shaft, gears and bearings, final drive, controller upgrades, firmware updates etc. The exploded view is the most important part of the video, would like to see more.
Dissapointed to hear this if so, as a mechanic making this serviceable would be a massive win. Still riding 90s stuff but so much modern stuff after 5 years is hard to find parts for.
@@EBikeBuilder_The smaller more compact an item is...the less likely unskilled end users can service it. For reference my Haibike is not tiotally serviceable yet...is 7 years of hard use, its never failed. Such may be the case for a quallty item like CYC offers.
@@markivory7121 Serviceability of a product has been an issue for decades. It is a by-product of higher levels of technology. Fortunately, many such items are not prone to failure. 90's stuff is simple= easy to repair. 2023 products? Not so much. BTW...you are not a mechanic any longer. Rather, you are likely a technician.
@@markivory7121I thinnk for the price you have to pay (1400 EUR in EU for kit without the battery) this is a big minus. What happens after 2 years when warranty is out?
I converted one of my titanium frame road bikes with this photon motor this summer, and have been super happy with its performance, ease of installation and maintenance. If you can change your BB and chainring, you can easily install a Photon motor. I loved it so much, I connected my Winter Fatbike to an e-bike with the Photon motor, and then converted my wife's city bike to an e-bike with a 3rd Photon motor. well done CYC!
Good job the way it mounts and the cranks are a real work of art. Very well thought out and executed with the torque sensor and cadence sensor making it work like a factory bike. The mounting method looks very sturdy and should stop the motor from coming loose. The ground clearance is also excellent as is the overall weight. A superior kit to the Bafang well done. I just went for a ride on my MTB around my favourite little circuit, this kit would spoil me😎👍
I agree. Alot for me to like about this CYC Photon! I'm multiple emails into conversations with both Gates and CYC about attempting to fit a Photon custom build I'm currently interested in building. CYC says while they do not sell any bolt-on gears for them at this time that there was an adapter that could probably be used to adapt to a Gates belt setup. The Gates guy mainly warned me about the 90 nm rating of their CDX & the Photon has I think 110 nm ot torque in it's stock 1200 watt max, if I remember correctly. The Photon could be dialed down a skosch bit and I feel the CDX should handle it pretty well. Neither party could give me specifics regarding getting the proper belt alignment. So I'm still in research mode while I wait to see how well some of these CYC Photon custom-builds handle the heat on some longer rides this summer. I'd been crossing back and forth between Kindernay 14 and 7 speeds, but have decided to wait till this fall when 3 x 3 comes out with their new 9 speed IGH which looks very interesting! The market for IGH hubs is getting very interesting suddenly and this CYC Photon seems like it might be a great fit for various ones of these.
hello. Please inquire about the Photon Motor. Bafang can be used up to 12mm from the bottom bracket. The photon motor looks a bit wide. May I know the distance between the bottom bracket and the motor crank axle?
This is a very good step in the right direction, but 750W is on the short end, I'll wait for a 1500W+ version when it's done and change all my mid drives to those!
2 months wait time after Payment is ridiculous! Why you do not have official Warehouse in EU? Your business model is not optimal for customers. Especially if you have to send back whole unit under warranty.
If the motor heat is trapped inside, can't you just put thermal pads or thermal paste in between the outer shell and motor shell so that the heat can properly transfer to the outer shell and dissipate through the fins? Is CYC doing this going forward?
Hi, I am keen to purchase one of your mid motor kits but your website does not give me the relevant information about anything other than how its built etc etc. I need CYC to assist me in my purchase, I do not have a clue about the difference between all the models, for example, I want the longest range available but also the lightest kit to fit to my full suspension bike, your CYC X1 Pro Gen 3 states 3000w or 5000, but only offers in the drop down menu the 3000w controller, so is this upgradeable via an app or do I need a 5000w controller!!, do you now see what I mean, your website is very very professionally designed and looking but lacks the very basic information for people who have no real experience of e bike stuff, btw I am a design engineer/fabricator/tig welder and your kits are the best looking kit, if nothing else, I look forward to your response. Lastly Molicel are considered the best battery cells from all the experienced e bike builder i have met yet you only do 52v/12.5ah!
@@geraldhenrickson7472 so is there no contact with anyone bar the retailer who with the exception of bicyclemotorworks in the usa are rubbish with their knowledge of the cyc stuff they are selling, on another note is the power delivery anything like the bafang mid mount motors??? thanks for your reply btw.
So many people gettting screwed here and waiting weeks to have their motors fixed by a dealer. All photon has to do is help their customers with trouble shooting and have off the shelf parts available to fix things when they malfunction. There is no way I would purchase one currently untill CYC allows users to fix their kits.
Hi CYC, is there a plan to develop a lighter weight Photon-like new motor in the near future? Sub 500 Watt and cut the weight and size to 2/3 of the current Photon. Also want shorter Q factor from 200 to 180mm. Feedback from a Photon User.
Interesting questions. We specialise in high power, high torque systems. No plan for a smaller conversion system at this point although you can get the Photon in a 250W version but it's only different firmware.
Big name ebike companies are deploying light to mid-weight bikes that are using light weight mid drive motors. It's a trend that you can't miss, go lighter and go stronger is the two growing ends that your company should both follow. I'd like to see a light weight Photon like motor be developed to meet the need. Thank you, CYC!
Love the idea of the motor. Best one I have seen. But your batteries cost 1,000 dollars and their shapes do not fit a lot of current mtb frames. Without an affordable, better shaped battery, it’s not a complete system for me. Also you could provide alternatives for backpack batteries that would be easy to connect and disconnect. In summary, good job on the motor itself. Now figure out the batteries alternatives.
I guess not as it is not a complete bike unit, only the motor, so they user could soource a battery from elsewhere, and the 2849 standard covers batteries
@@AndrewDCDrummond UL 2849 covers the whole system, which it looks like they have. UL 2271 only covers the battery. It would be a simple thing for them to get the motor, system, and the three batteries approved. If they did that, they could make millions in the US alone. Also set up a "base" in the USA to work from for the Photon.
@@geraldhenrickson7472 Anyone who doesn't want their house to burn down. Read about all the fires in NYC. CYC is getting UL approval for their Phroton.
Given the nature of the product and the company I think a wait time is to be expected and probably a commercial imperative. We've waited several years a for a decent alternative to the other two major affordable conversions, and this one should be a lot better. A 2 month wait seems fine - but has to be backed up by great communication and a decent media prescience, which hopefully will be the case, as it isn't correctly. Pleased to see this video.
@@ataksnajpera you think these guys have unlimited resources to suddenly meet the demand? Or would you prefer they roll out to specific markets first? The wait for my battery will be about 2 months, and that is fine. Get on with the rest of your life while waiting. I don't smoke. Take a chill pill.
@hindesite Well do you have it yet? I was just reading comments on their other videos of guys waiting 14 months for theirs and it showed up broken or missing something.
@leroywingo8599 was shipped 2 weeks after I ordered and I got it 2 weeks after that, been using it since late March. Is awesome... BTW Photon hasn't been available for 14 months so nobody has been waiting that long.
No :) The Photon is rated at 750W for mainly pedal assist so when running the system for its intended use, the efficiency is very good. The system was designed to be comparable to other fully integrated ebikes. However, there is an "unrestricted" mode setting that gets used a lot and in this case, the motor will heat up much faster. When entering this mode, there is a warning that pops up to say that the motor will heat up faster and that thermal protection will kick in to limit the power output at a certain temperature.
will you guys have any good retailers in ontario canada? because everything is so much more expensive because of exchange rates...but i would much rather support american made products since so much comes from china and thats so sad to see...we need to lessen dependency on china...and with ebikes and ebike motor kits becoming so popular hopefully the prices can start becoming more affordable to us in the west. Ive just discovered the cyc brand and must say...im impressed and very interested...however i must wait yet another year to save up for one of your kits. The only other option is the bbshd from bafang...they seem to have a good quality product and parts availability etc...user configurations are also important to me...i like to go fast..lol..and have had motorcycles of all kinds since i was 7 yrs old...from dirt bikes to ninjas and my fav...my harley sportster 1200 custom... but im getting older and got rid of my motorcycles with insurance costs always going up when we barely get 5 months of riding season here in northern ontario. thanks for this video and i will surely be contacting you in the near future!!!
I think these kits are not made in America but could be wrong. There are several USA retailers though. P{rices on quality eBikes and eBike kits will not come down yet perhaps battery prices will...someday.
Too small hence too hot and not the same longevity as a BBSHD and not serviceable by user. So it is not for people depending on reliability for commuting
What’s the use of that? Not legal on UK. roads without registration. And where do we see that ! Cannot any of these cycle engineers produce an inexpensive UK street legal 250watt,high torque clip on motor unit with gear box. Make it lightweight, zero resistance when not using motor aid and battery power efficient. But no, they pander to the underground chancer brigade, forest wreckers and across the pond speed merchants. Get a motorcycle (electric of course)
