RaD Episode 33:
We finally make it to the proper countryside of Fujian, China and visit the fascinating Tulou homes, meet local Hakka people and continue the cycling journey in China. Cycle touring China at it's best!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
++Wait, what's RaD?: Ryan And Darin (that's us! yes...we both have boy names...is that weird?). Get it? ...r And d...RAD.
++The Adventure: riding our bikes around a bunch of different places in this world for a year. Seeing new sights, trying new foods, meeting lots of new people, visiting old friends and generally having a swell ol' time challenging ourselves to EXPLORE MORE(!) from the saddle of a bicycle. Yay!

Lonnie Bartz getting to interact with the locals is definitely one of my favorite parts of travel in China! So much more interesting when I can engage with the locals 😊

So many just wild camp and keep to themselves but we love that you mix with locals, it makes the story so much more interesting 👍 Thank you for showing us all the real people...

This comment makes our day! We often debate about wild camping to make it more "adventurous" but really a huge part of the journey for us is meeting and mingling with locals and really experiencing the culture of a place. So happy you're appreciating that too : D

Wow! What a magical adventure! Beautiful off the main track village roads. The 土楼 tulou experience! If I am not mistaken, the tulous are considered a Unesco world heritage. Their occupants are the soft spoken Hakka families. There are many Hakka people here in Malaysia too.

You have made a very special short film. You're turning into a pretty good film maker. Loved this episode. Not a skyscraper or shopping mall in sight. You are also very modest with your grasp of Chinese. Clearly your ability to speak the language massively helps you as of course it would. Might be nice to include subtitles where you can if you can translate all that is said. Lovely family you stayed with. Looking forward to you showing us more of rural China. Keep thinking you will turn a bend and the view will be of a massive depressing city again. Thanks for sharing your journey.

Thank you Alex. It's definitely my goal to improve with each episode. Appreciate the kind words. This is what I meant in the previous episode that riding through the smog city would surely be worth it. China is like a treasure hunt...I guess that's why I like it. Have to work for it through the gritty, but definitely rewarded with some very unique and beautiful experiences.

Awesome ride video in rural China.....authentic and a glimpse of what real China is in rural places as oppose to what most media portrays on lives of people there and its strong cultural identity. Great stuff on par if not better than NatGeo .

Ryan lived in China for a year and half teaching english and lived with a host family who didn't speak english! Her host father and her tutor helped her with learning Mandarin. She also would just go to the markets and find the right people to talk to who were patient enough to help her with Mandarin. We definitely reap the reward when traveling in China by speaking a little bit of Mandarin!
