The Canary Islands! These 7 little pieces of paradise is where Belén and I set out to cycle last fall, climbing all of them in a period of 7 weeks, commuting with the Naviera Armas ferry in between.
Let us take you on the journey of the first island: Lanzarote!

Hy, guys! I was really impressed ( in a positive way ) about what you, Tristan, told about plastic. You're absolutely right. Everyday at work I drink coffee by a machine and I see the plastic "spoon": I don't use that, because I drink coffee without sugar and how many tons of plastic everyday in the world for...nothing... I hope ASAP we all, together, stop this trash in our planet...It's really incredible how people don't reflect on this point...And me too, like traveller cyclist, see what people trash on the borders of the street. It's so sad... Thank you very much to let all of us think to be better for ourselves and our next generations! I follow my rule: "never zero", I mean that no one day I stay without to make something in life to be better, fo me and for the others. Cheers, guys!

Hi! Thanks for the video. How did you get your bikes to the island? I assume with a big and bulky bike travel bag? Where and how did you store it during your travel?

Just discovered your channel and am blown away by the awesome footage. I can’t wait to see more videos from you in the future. One question, What type of shorts do you wear on your tours? Do they have any padding?

Thanks Landon! Uploading six more Canary Islands videos the next six weeks. Hope you’ll enjoy them. I wear Nike shorts I got a few years ago, and sometimes short padded pants but have been trying to get away from those. I need as much of an iron butt as Cersei needs an iron throne!

The government of Lanzarote does taking seriously keeping it clean and preserving its unique environment, but it is a challenge with all that wind and the lack of resources (including rain).o I very much enjoyed walks on the central highlands of the island, picking up trash along the roadway, in 2018. I would like to go back and rent a bicycle.
@tristanbogaard

You should rent a bike once you go back, it’s such a pleasant way to see the island.

For as far as we know, there are none. But rules are definitely getting tighter - we always try to be as discrete as possible, unless there's a really good shot and we don't have time to wait for people to pass / not be there at all. Fortunately most folks are fine if you fly it shortly and safely :)

Amazing video! How exhausting was it to cycle the island on a scale of 1-10? I'm thinking of ditching the car and getting a bike instead and cycle to the destinations. Is it possible for someone who's average at cycling?
@tristanbogaard
@tristanbogaard 4 года назад
Totally possible. Lanzarote is the most cyclable island, because it’s really quite flat. There’s some hills, but in general I’d say it’s 4 out of 10? Consider renting an electric bicycle in Arrecife, then you’ll skip the hassle of taking your bike on a plane, and have some battery to back you up on the climbs!

A simple solution to the plastic waste problem: don't use the vending machines! The cup is also a single use item and more litter. Next time, go into the gas station and buy a cup of coffee at the counter. The coffee will be in a china cup or a glass and will have a metal spoon. Both of these items will be washed before reuse - the ultimate recycling. When folks stop using the vending machines, the waste generated by them disappears.

Very fair point! Gladly ditch my Lavazza for that.

@MsTubbytube
@MsTubbytube 3 года назад
The camels used to be the work animals of Lanzarote, like oxen and horses elsewhere. They were used this way on Lanzarote for hundreds of years until about the 1960s or 1970s, as I learned at a wonder folk museum in San Bartolome on the island. Without the tourism operation they would probably have all been abandoned, as many horses have been in many places, as there would be no money to feed and care for them. I visited 3 years ago and got a ride on a camel with an Algerian camel-master leading the pack train.

For working animals to survive there must be work for them to do, camels, elephants and horses have worked beside humans for thousands of years to build the world we now live in, if we do not create jobs for them to do they will not exist in our modern world, they deserver to stay with us in dignity doing their jobs that they have always done. Don't pity them to death because giving tourists rides is beneath you, for a camel it's probably a pretty easy gig. On the treatment side of things, I'm sure camels aren't cheap and take a considerable amount of time to train, given this investment of time and money why would the animal be not taken proper care off. Thanks Dermot.
@tristanbogaard
@tristanbogaard 2 года назад
Thanks for the constructive comment, Dermot. For me, it all depends on how they’re treated. Dogs owned by men who get a kick out of shooting animals, stored in iron cages, sleeping in their own feces, confined for days on end… horses carrying humans where a car or bicycle could do just fine… chained camels unnecessarily walking shed loads of tourists up and down-no way I’m defending something like that. And hey, elephants don’t exist to work for humans, neither do camels and neither does any other animal. I think we can all take a step back from the possessive attitude and allow any animal a life we’d like to live ourselves, free of being someone else’s money maker, toy or slave.
@koluchi12
@koluchi12 2 года назад
"if we don't create jobs for them to do they will not exist in our modern world" dude are you talking about a camel or a guy who is ending his university degree? These animals have a natural environments in which there is no need of any human for them to flourish. They have been in this world plenty of years before it was destroyed by our "progress".
@dermotmcdermott415
@dermotmcdermott415 2 года назад
@@koluchi12 I'm not an expert on camels but I don't think there are camels living in the wild, they are a domesticated animal and I'm fairly sure they would not fair very well left to roam the desert unattended. If you know of any herds of camels in the wild, please let me know about them and how they survive.
@koluchi12
@koluchi12 2 года назад
Man if you're not a camel expert then do a little research before saying "I think there is no wild camels". Of course there are wild camels as well as wild dogs, wild cats, wild horses, etc. The domestication of a species during human history doesn't mean they go extinct in the wild.

These camels are fine, you are too sensitive. There are regions of the planet where people are treated much worse than these camels.
@tristanbogaard
@tristanbogaard 5 лет назад
And there are regions in the world where workers are treated 'worse' than cattle in our wonderful western society, but does that mean we shouldn't focus on either problem? Camels have just as much the right to not be pulled around to serve lazy tourists and uneducated people. Not a sensitivity issue, more of an ethical one!
@Plast_and_Cars
@Plast_and_Cars 5 лет назад
Do not think that I wanted to insult you. Camels are very strong this is their calling...So if someone rides a horse this is also not ethical? Unfortunately the world is not perfect. Who was lucky and he was born healthy and free.... But there are and not lucky people and animals.
@tristanbogaard
@tristanbogaard 5 лет назад
Didn't feel insulted, that's ok! I don't think riding a horse is very nice either. I'm personally not comfortable with it. And with small efforts the world of a single person can be quite perfect, actually. Small choices that have a big outcome; like saying no to riding camels, or not drinking coffee from vending machines (yep, that's me being corrected by another comment here, which is great!).
