That escalator looks like the formidable 59th Street station counterpart in Manhattan which takes you four stories under the earth, it's vertiginous.

The escalator was build by a German factory in Berlin in 1940. In 60 years I have never seen it failed.

Not that there's a hope in hell that a similar tunnel could exist in the UK, but if it did, at least 4 out of 5 of the lights would be out, there'd be a few abandoned McDonalds wrappers on the floor, and at least one homeless person sheltering.

The Maastunnel is guarded both by cameras as well as by personel (in this video you see them standing at the foot of the escalators at the beginning and end of the tunnel wearing black coats). This tunnel is very save at all hours on all days of the week.

did you miss the emergency stop button just hanging loose on a wire half way up? I looked at that and thought "ah, this isn't Germany" :)
@wimahlers
@wimahlers 3 года назад
@@mozismobile There are 4 escalators on each side. And on each side 2 of the 4 escalators are in renovation, The loose parts you see are parts from the escalators currenly being renovated. They are inactive and not part of the running escalators.

Came here to say exactly this. In a high-crime dystopia like the UK, the chances of you getting from one end of this to the other still in possession of your bicycle would be slim to none, with the police instead advising women not to use it by themselves or at night (because they've pretty much given up on keeping the streets safe at this point.)

It looks very nice now, thanks for the update. I used to ride this tunnel every day 10 to 15 years ago and I remember it being nice too but much darker.

I cycled through this tunnel every working day until about 2 years ago. It might be brighter now but I never considered this tunnel "dark". To me it was only just a tat less brighter before than it is now.

It’s surprising how quickly it is to cycle through there, just being protected from wind ;)

Wonderful shot of the SS Rotterdam at the end. My 9yo son and I are ocean liner geeks and prior to Covid and Brexit, had planned a trip down on the ferry from Hull and a couple of days stay on this beautifully restored ship, one of the last survivors of the transatlantic era and the only one really accessible due to being in Europe (we British of course sold our maritime history to the US and Dubai, in the form of the Queen Mary and QE2, respectively.) Alas, with the world closed down due to the pandemic, the Rotterdam may now just as well be on the moon.

As someone afraid of heights, the idea of going with my bike in my hand on this escalator scares me so much. I've been in that tunnel on foot with a friend. But with a bike.. oef :p

Maybe, after of 100 years in Latinoamerica will build similar tunnel. Santiago, Buenos Aires or Rio Janeiro will be the first cities in this type of construction. Netherland's technology and engineering bike is epic!

@@Greengate777 Fun fact.. The tunnel is still officially closed since 1942. That is, as a protest to the German occupation during WWII, the tunnel was never officially opened.

With what I can remember from when I was living on the south bank of Rotterdam and took the tunnel to go on a bender in the city centre, it is freezing in that tunnel :')

On my first cycling tour through Europe Google Maps lead me throuhg this tunnel. I had no idea, it looked like a bridge on my phone screen. It was very surreal to accidentally find such infrastructure I could not dream of in "my" country.

@@DimVDKleijn hard, cold, stone material, and underground... sounds about right then again, when it's windy and shitty above the surface near a major river (essentially an open stretch), it's probably not all that great either.

Had to use the lift instead of the elevator as I was on my recumbent trike complete with trailer.
@kjeldsloot
@kjeldsloot 3 года назад
Does it fit? I'm afraid my velomobile or other recumbents don't fit in it. I'm afraid they are too long for the lift.

Is there wood on the steps? Cool!
@DimVDKleijn

Think they replaced the old steps ( which where made from wood ) with metal ones and added wooden accents because the tunnel is a monument.

Loving the security guards you have at each end. Here in London we would have a load of face covered, knife wielding street robbers instead.

@SirPrancelot1
@SirPrancelot1 3 года назад
@@wimahlers Good to hear that's not a problem. The lifts don't look deep enough for cargo bikes.
@wimahlers
@wimahlers 3 года назад
@@SirPrancelot1 The lift is very wide It can easily fit my cargo bicycle and even wider and or longer bicycles or velomobiles. I have used the lift with my cargo bicycle. I just prefer the escalator. Especialy during rush hour. The waiting time for the lift during rush hour is unpredictable. And sometimes the lift first goes down instead of up to pick up some pedestrians. The escalator is predictable. I am just too impatient to wait for the lift.
