Cyclone Tracy private letter November 1995 Final 

Fascinating viewing, Peter. It was interesting for me to see what Wagaman was like about a week after the cyclone. The white structure centre-screen, and a quarter of the way from the top of the screen, was what was left of the walls of the bathroom and toilet of the house we were living in. The rest was levelled to the ground. I was also amazed to see people shopping on Smith Street only 3-4 days after the cyclone. We only went into town briefly on Christmas Day to see what the situation was at the NT News (where my brother was working). He wanted to advise them we would have to leave town because our house had been 100% destroyed. We can’t remember whether we left town on the second or third morning (I think it was the third because we had to excavate my car first from under a brick garage which had collapsed on top of it) and then we headed south in a battered car, sans windscreen, once Lee Point Road had been cleared. We left because we had no food or fresh water, and communications were practically non-existent out at Wagaman, and we had no idea what was going on with the relief effort. You film shows that the recovery efforts were much further advanced in the city than I realised at the time.

I just sat through the new Twister movie and this makes it so much more real. Remarkable
