This 6 part series walks through the very detailed procedure for diagnosing and replacing a cracked cylinder head and head gasket on a 1995 Toyota Tacoma with the 3.4 liter 5VZ-FE V6 engine.
This engine was widely used by Toyota from the mid 1990's through 2004 in the Tacoma, Tundra, T-100, 4Runner, and Land Cruiser. Therefore, this repair procedure should be common to all of those vehicles with the same engine.
Due to the detail presented in this video series, it is also a good reference for doing other repairs such as changing the antifreeze/coolant, timing belt, valve cover gaskets, camshafts, alternator, spark plugs, spark plug wires, ignition coil packs, vacuum hoses, exhaust manifolds, belts, hoses, cooling fan, and various intake gaskets.

Here is the tool review for the OTC Universal Pulley Holder that was used in this video series to tighten the camshaft pulley bolts and to install the service bolt in the exhaust camshafts.
• OTC Universal Pulley H...
Here is the my total cost breakdown...
Parts:
$325.00 rebuilt cylinder head (www.ebay.com/s...)
$138.00 gasket set
$25.00 cylinder head bolts
$23.00 valve shims
$10.00 fuel injector electrical connector
$16.00 antifreeze
$537.00 Parts Total
Tools:
$54.00 OTC universal pulley holder
$80.00 factory service manual
$7.00 oil can
$7.00 blow gun nozzle
$20.00 torque angle gauge (skip this and just make a mark on the bolt heads with a silver Sharpie)
$76.00 machinist's steel straight edge
$34.00 valve adjusting tool
$278.00 Tools Total
$815.00 Grand Total

THANK YOU I LOVE YOU MAN. YOU ARE GODS GIFT. I’ve been following this series for 3 weeks, I’m 17 years old with my first truck, never touched an engine before and I followed your instructions and you taught me so much about engines. After pressure test, BOTH of my heads were cracked and I replaced my heads on my 99 Tacoma. This was such a headache and a learning experience, now I feel like someone can point at a part into a 1st gen Tacoma and I can tell them exactly what it is. Mechanics were trying to charge me 3,800 just for the head gasket and I only spent about 900 for parts, tools, and fluids. Seriously man, taking your time to do this and help people is so great and I can’t thank you enough. My engine runs better than before AND I finally fixed this misfire. You rock man!!!!!!!!

Excellent series, I'm about to complete my DIY heads job. The only thing you could have done better, was to use a MLS head gasket, looks like you used graphite. Toyota had a recall on these engines, for blown head gaskets and it did switch them over to Multi Layered Steel gaskets, for their strength. In my case, I did take the time to throughly clean each part before I reassembled. A++ for the consistent explanations, step by step voice over, sharp footage, steady and properly lit. Great job!

Concerning the head bolts: generally speaking, if you lube the threads on a bolt prior to torquing it down, and the FSM does not say to do that, then you may need to reduce your target torque value somewhat to compensate. The reason is: the system you are tightening will 'consume' the tightness you apply as some combination of thread friction, and thread stretch. So if you lube it up, less torque will be attributed to friction, meaning that more goes into stretching. That isn't necessarily a good thing. (For example: if the fastener is a torque-to-yield bolt, you'd be making it yield more than what the engineers called for, and it could later break while in service.) The situation can get a little muddy, for instance if you are tightening a bolt down into a hole that has some corrosion on the threads. In that case you'll have more friction than normal and less stretch, so lubing up could serve to bring things closer to the desired outcome. So you do have to use your best judgement. Just wanted to bring this to your viewer's attention.
@flinch622
@flinch622 5 лет назад
No, I don't think so. Anytime a manual calls for torque angle gauge for final fastener install, that's a torque to yield setup and an engineer has done the math for bolt stretch with an eye in yield vs. breaking strength. You have to use new bolts, and the exact specification called for. Grade 3, grade 5, grade 8 all have different properties for the same diameter/thread pitch. As a side note, any time I see torque angle specs, I chase threads first to make sure thread surfaces load up evenly because the fastener is going somewhere near the edge of its useful limits. There are situations where oil or anti seize gets aced out, and that's when sealant or loctite is called for, or specialized situations like... a dc motor: you have to keep oil products away from a commutator and bolts in that area get installed dry.

Thank you for such a detailed video series, it gave me the courage to do it myself. It turns out I have the same issue as yours, a cracked cylinder head in almost the exact same spot as you, except on the right side. Luckily I found someone willing to sell me a remanufactured one for just $150! Not much for what would have paid to rebuild a good head. Hardest part was removing the exhaust, which I ended up breaking a bolt off on the downpipe, so now I'm gonna have to drill it out. I'm almost wondering if I should replace the rear main seal as a preventative since it doesn't seem like it would be too much more to go...
@WorseThanChiggers
@WorseThanChiggers 9 лет назад
progolfer69 That's quite a deal for $150! Bummer about the broken bolt. The exhaust work on mine made me nervous for the same potential reason. Hope that drilling it out is not too much of a challenge. Rear main seal? That's a lot of work if its not already leaking but why not if you're up to dropping the transmission. Good time for a clutch, too, while you're in there if you have a manual transmission. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

When I pulled the head off my 2000 tundra v6 there was a kind of silicone stuff on the block between the gasket and the block. I seem to recall that, not too far back in the day, there was a substance often applied to this surface , especially on diesels. It wasn't actually silicone and had a name something like "Indian Head" sealer. If I recall correctly, it was copper based. For sure there was something like this in my engine and It was all factory original. What do you think....?

On the right passenger side head the instructions says to align the intake camshaft with exhaust camshaft at the 2 dotted lines. Once that's in place the intake camshaft sprocket is no longer facing up at the timing mark. It's facing down. Will turning the camshaft clockwise interfere with the piston and valves? The instructions do not show or display anything after the procedure of the camshaft installation
@WorseThanChiggers

Thank you for the question. The 5VZ-FE is a non-interference engine. Therefore, you are safe to turn the camshafts independently of the crankshaft without risk of pistons hitting the valves. You'll see that I did just that in this video series.

@WorseThanChiggers Год назад
It sounds like you may not be aligning the correct dots between the intake and exhaust cams. On the passenger side, you align the double dots but on the driver's side, you align the single dots. If aligned correctly, the cams will fully seat and are not compressing any valve springs. Of course, this all assumes that you have already installed the service bolt correctly as shown in the video. Here is the intake cam going in: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nFYEoWTX0YU.html followed by the exhaust cam going in: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nFYEoWTX0YU.html

@WorseThanChiggers

@@commanderTL It's hard to say. Using the washers may shorten their useful length. Without using the washers, the friction between the bolt and the cylinder head might be different and would affect your application of proper torque. Note that I am very conservative by nature. If it was me, I wouldn't want to risk using substandard bolts for such an important step.

@WorseThanChiggers
@WorseThanChiggers 2 года назад
Those are indeed very good theories. Interestingly, I never had overheating issues for as long as I owned it or an issue with cabin heat. And, the bubbling sounds from inside the cabin were indicative of a small amount of air trapped in the cooling system for years and long before I ever noticed a loss of coolant. I attributed the reason for the trapped air to having the thermostat's jiggle valve upside down. When I started noticing a loss of coolant, it was accompanied by visible vapor from the exhaust pipe upon startup.

I am actually experiencing all of the symptoms I mentioned in my post with the 4cyl in my 84' pickup after a water pump failure on a 45 min drive on the highway. Soon after that trip all these symptoms started happening, but no coolant from the exhaust though. I am sure the cylinder head is warped because the engine did get hot but luckily I was able to keep it from boiling over. Of course this would happen before getting everything thing together to do a 3.4 conversion, Murphy's law I guess. Great video might I add, this will help a lot of folks leary of starting this project on there own.

For a known coolant leak, look for the cause. Is it leaking into the exhaust side of the engine and being burned like mine, often accompanied by white smoke? Is it leaking into the oil passages? These videos continue to save me and I can't thank you enough. I am doing both heads and am in the install phase - on the right hand side my inclination is to line up two dots with two dots when I install the camshafts, and then rotate them back to the one dot/one dot position which they were in originally at TDC when I pulled off the valve cover. Do you remember if that is what you did with the right side and can you confirm that's a good plan? The FSM does not address it as far as I can tell, it says to install the RH camshafts with two dots lining up but doesn't mention rotating them back to 1 dot like they were when I found them. THANK YOU.
@WorseThanChiggers
@WorseThanChiggers 4 года назад
Thanks for the kind comments. I really appreciate it. As long as you install the RH camshaft with the two dots lined up, you're good. That is the position where the lobes are not compressing the valve springs and you can get it together without much resistance. You'll set the timing later during the timing belt installation procedure. That's when you'll rotate the cams so that the marks on the camshaft timing pulleys line up with the marks on the timing belt cover. It sounds like you're well on your way to completing your project successfully.

@WorseThanChiggers
@WorseThanChiggers 5 лет назад
When a head gasket fails, there's usually a reason and you need to discover what that was and resolve that first. The gasket itself is typically not to blame. It's generally good practice to resurface the head when changing the head gasket to ensure that you don't get another leak. It would be very unfortunate to go through all the time and effort and then have another leak reappear a short time later. If the head is in any way warped, you definitely want to get it resurfaced. You should at least check it for flatness with a high quality machinist straight edge but those are expensive. I'd still recommend having a machine shop at least look it over for you.

@WorseThanChiggers 3 года назад
Mine did not. I measured the clearances and found several to be off. Some by quite a bit. The valves on these heads use shims rather than being adjustable. I measured the discrepancies and the thickness of all the shims. Then I did the math and was able to swap some around to meet the factory specified clearances. But I still ended up having to order a couple after determining my final required thicknesses to complete the job. If I was to do it again, I would wait to ship my old head back until after the job was complete in case I needed to swap some of the old shims to the new head.

@WorseThanChiggers 2 года назад
I think that I understand what you are confused about. Alignment of the cams is a separate procedure prior to timing the engine. On the passenger side, align the double dots on each cam to install them. Once the cams are in place and their caps are installed to hold them down, you can then proceed with the rest of the assembly. After the valve covers are on, you can install the cam sprockets. Before installing the timing belt, turn each cam sprocket so that their timing marks line up with the marks on the timing belt back cover plate. They will be near 12 o'clock. Don't worry. You can safely turn the cams without hurting the engine. Toyota's 5VZ-FE is a non-interference engine meaning that the pistons will not hit an open valve. You really need to have a factory service manual to do this job. It has all of the details that you must follow.

@WorseThanChiggers

Cylinder heads are cast and machined for use in multiple applications with different camshaft configurations. The housing cap and semi-circular plugs fill the holes that are not used in your application. You'll see that the space where the house cap goes looks very similar to the other side of the head where the camshaft passes through. You could be getting a leak from one of several places including the house cap, semi-circular plugs, camshaft oil seals, valve cover gaskets, spark plug tube seals, or even the head gasket itself. If you're not sure, I'd take it back to the same technician and have him do a courtesy check.

Thanks for the response ! I cleaned up that whole area back there to see where the oil is leaking from. I have a suspicion that the leak is due to the screws on the valve cover not being tight enough. I know the screws have a rubber washer, so you can't crank down on them. I tried to send a private message but couldn't figure out how to do so. I have a question. Do the cam seal plugs in the back of the heads need a bead of RTV around the rubber cam plugs themselves or only on the mating surface of the plug caps? I already installed it as you did in the video but I got to thinking about if oil could escape from that plug to cap connection, or if the rubberized coating of the caps is enough to seal. Just wondering if you had any leak issues! Thank you!
@WorseThanChiggers
@WorseThanChiggers 7 лет назад
That's a good question to confirm. You can see here at 18:27 of the video that the factory service manual calls for seal packing (a.k.a. RTV) to be applied only to the tips of the cap. None should be used on the rubberized plug itself. I actually applied too much where it should only go on the tips of the caps, not across the entire mating surface. There are grooves there that I now assume may be oil passages to allow some oil to get into the plug and possibly lubricate the end of the cam shaft. I haven't inspected those locations on my engine recently but I do not suspect any leaks have developed there.
@TheChapMX
@TheChapMX 7 лет назад
Ahhhh yes and that is what I remember seeing you do at that point. I've watched your videos so many times haha. I wonder if I should take that cap off and only apply RTV to those surfaces shown. I did read where someone had a problem with oil not dropping backdown out of the heads.
@WorseThanChiggers
@WorseThanChiggers 7 лет назад
If you haven't applied any RTV at those locations, it might be a good idea to prevent a small leak. It won't hurt anything internally, though, to leave it as-is.
