Nice to hear that Paul is not merely an awesome musician and great guy, but also has good taste in other bands...Dillinger, Meshuggah, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Opeth, Alan Holdsworth...can't argue with that list.
Why are people so harsh on Rob, he is a good interviewer, he has fun with bands that mess around (The Red Chord) and he is serious with people that want to be serious (Paul Masvidal)....keep it up Rob.
Technical metal actually has a lot in common with technical Jazz - both require devote musicianship, both have a level of competitiveness and limit pushing. The big difference (apart from the aural style) is that Metal has more emphasis on live performance where as many jazz shows involve watching guys stand still while ripping it. I love death metal and swing/bop jazz, they are both great flavours of life and should be eaten regularly with a healthy side of groove and beats.
Maaaan! Paul mention Ben Monder! All kudos to Paul for giving Ben Monder credit. Ben must be one of the most underrated guitarists. Check out "Orbits" with Ben Monder here on youtube. Try to keep up with the time ;) Best, Sandemose
I love this band. Saw them live in May. Paul's microphone shocked him lol. Planning to see them this January. Also can't wait for their new material to be released!
As a son of a native Thai mother, I've went to many Thai temples and talked to monks, and my god Paul really reminds me of a monk. The way he talks, how calm he is, he literally is down to earth......he was probably stoned during the interview.
Most of the bands he named are some of my favorite bands. Btbam, opeth, dream theater, the faceless, soft machine (well, Alan Holdsworth), Mahavishnu Orchestra. Good to know his influences and bands he's keen on are similar to mine. Except I can have cynic to my list.
Ye Opeth it's a great band too, but have no comparation with Cynic, they have a music that it's like from another world and the fact that they have to support Opeth, it's like an insult for one of the best Death Metal influencial bands to be under them, and others. Paul it's a fucking genius
Yeah Paul announced they are working on a new EP which will have remixes of traced in air songs and one new song and they are also working on a whole new third full length, so i cant wait!
btw, the part about "constructive anger", and then saying "it's more of a TOOL to me" is kinda interresting, couse maynard said almost that exact same thing like 8 years ago. ^^ might be nothing, but still a cool coincidence.
@TrollandDie That also makes a lot of sense, sadly, we will never know the true meaning of those lyrics but I've read in a few places that Chuck had something against Paul.
they should ask him anything about his yoga practicing, paramahansa yogananda, self-educating.. its obvious, those things are really important.. i wonder why nobody never asked him about that.
@ShittyMcPoopyBalls actually watch the vid on the side bar thats called Cynic Interview 1991. he basically says him and chuck get along fine and have a relaxed relationship. whether things flared up later i dunno, but thats when he was spending time with him so im guessing they were fine.
@R3b3lAp3 That question has been rumored for the longest time..I met both Paul and Sean, and there was something a little weird about them..I mean they are obviously a little weird as people, but I could have sworn that they are both gay. But really whats the difference, they are seriously the nicest people I've met in my fucking life. Paul legit talked to me, cared what I had to say, and was truly a nice person. Sean I only got to talk to for like 2 minutes, he was nice as hell also
@vincentizghra I love playing guitar tripping on acid and/or shrooms. All you need is a room full of equipment (half-stacks, monitors, processors, guitars, etc.) and you're good to go. Hit the record button and start improvising. You'll be amazed with what you can come up with.
Yeah, tell me about it. At 01:45 the interviewer laughs when Paul says that he felt that he was being instructed. He laughs, and then changes his mind. Wonder why? He realized that it was nothing funny about it....stooooopid! (with italian accent) Paul is the coolest guy still, seem really intellectual, would probably be great to talk with him. Best, Sandemose
Nah you're taking it the wrong way. The "7 viewers" comment was clearly a goof on himself and his "Metal Injection" channel having no viewers and not Paul himself.
@ShittyMcPoopyBalls Your thinking of The Philosopher. I read the lyrics to it and if they were indeed about Paul then thats pretty horrible. My repsect for Chuck has just plummeted.
@ShittyMcPoopyBalls Really? I thought that it was complaining about priests who tell us how to behave but don't ''know your own sexuality''; perhaps a refererence to the sexual abuse and vows of abstinance that they take. I'm pretty sure that's the one you're thinking of (first time I've heard of that story) but I doubt he would sink that low-I know everyone saying how unbelievably nice a guy Chuck was is exagerrated but wasn't a bad guy I would say)
