Kudos for sharing that experience and footage. Imho, most people in the community would refrain from doing the same out of shame. Thus, at least we can learn from it. That being said, I'd probably consider leaving the sports once I noticed my EPs left me for good. Whatever, glad you're alive buddy!

What is "EP"? What do you mean by that? I really don`t get it...I`m close to 200 jumps but never heard of that...

@@tanakaobi Emergency procedures. In the video I see nothing that looks like the jumper was trying to deploy the reserve on his own. Of course you can't judge a situation reliably with the video as your exclusive source of information but I still think that we all should question our choice of hobby extremely rigorously if we fell into the AAD in similar manner. Doesn't mean you're a bad person - just means your life expectancy might improve significantly if you do something else for fun.

@@Iguanamunich Thanks for explaining. Also I didn`t understand what that jumper was doing. When you see the ground coming towards you that fast it`s time for the reserve... Blue skies and be safe!

Just looking at where the horizon is and how big the ground looks by the time the Cypres fires... if that doesn't frighten you into either brushing up on your reserve drills or giving up jumping, I don't know what would! 🙂

the story at the link does not read well, I am hoping that its a second language issue. If you cant find your main handle, and cant think to do your EPs and your only thought is I hope my cypres works then perhaps its time to consider another sporting endeavour. I would not like to be in a wrap with this guy.

A good save… but never give up!! Two attempts and go to EPs is the standard response

I once had a high speed malfunction (bag lock) and was able to get the reserve open by about 1400ft probably a second before the AAD fired. Altitude goes away real quick.

Clearly he was flipping around every time he tried to pull due to horrendous body position. Thought they ironed out that habit during AFF...

Back in my day that was a sure bounce.

Agree for sure! Mid 80s. there was 2 kinds of AADs ( loop cutters and pin pullers ). There were only 1 kind of skydiver that used them ( students ). Only a few DZs were starting to use them, nobody really thought they were reliable. I sure didn't see any attempts at deploying the main or reserve! Perhaps speed walking might be a little better of a leisure activity for this fellow.

From my first jump on I never jumped without. And I would never do it! 😱
@MrReasonabubble

@@MisterIvyMike different mindset these days. When I started jumping, the Cypres was in its infancy and most people did not use an AAD. I did my first 800 jumps without one, and would jump without one now temporarily if mine was out of action for some reason. On the whole, of course an AAD is a good thing - but it's worth bearing in mind that the vast majority of skydiving fatalities are not due to low pulls/ no-pulls.

Why? Every single jump I did my emergency procedure before! I had two reserves, one as a total malfunction and it worked very well. Nowadays as a pilot I do the same when I have a rescue chute on my back: grab the handle and do the exercise. But yeah, sometimes the brain freezes...
@somecharactersnotallowed1319
I trusted Cypress when I jumped. Dislocated my arm in FF at 4k at once point and luckily was able to pull the reserve. Still, glad to know Cypress was there as a last resort.

As stated in another comment, I hope this was an error in translation. This guy had the presence of mind to remember he had a cypres, but couldn’t remember how to execute emergency procedures, which should be muscle memory. Not good

WTF was that? I agree with yarpos, for his safety and others, he needs a new sport.

There are two kinds of people. One, will say everything "went so fast" and the other will say, everything slowed down. The latter can skydive for a life time safely. The former... well... shouldn't skydive or be a police officer, if we're being blunt.

why didn't be pull his reserve? if the cypres could fire it, why not him?

I wonder if the cause of this is wearing those stupid gloves? Much better to wear tight fitting leather, or imitation leather gloves, as with the gloves he was wearing you lose all sensation of what you are trying to grab.
