I bought mine when they first came out, to accommodate new hunters that are recoil shy. The 7.62x39 with the right load approximates the 30-30 in eastern whitetail woods and is a far easier rifle to use well for a newbie compared to a lever action and has slightly more recoil than your typical .22LR. The only operating issue (can’t really call it a fault) is that it has a fairly light strike, which has caused a few FTF with some surplus ammo with hard primers. Since commercial and hand loads run through it without a problem, this is more an ammo issue than the fault of the rifle. My rifle has been used to take about 20 deer at this point and has proven itself to be an effective rifle for short-range eastern woods. I highly recommend it for light carry, but where it really shines is being given as a newbie’s first center fire rifle.
@@ZRUSOutdoorsChannel Well, more capacity would be nice, sure, but with single-stack magazines you have some very nice and flat magazines, which is nice for putting in pockets and what not. I think that still with a single stack setup and feed, you could still have some kind of drum made, even if it was just like 12 rounds or something, that'd still be pretty decent for just some general purpose light carbine.
@@0neDoomedSpaceMarine Oh yeah, id love to see anything in a lager capacity than 5! But you are right, these are nice and slim, and small enough to carry 2 on the stock like i have in this mosin nagant shell holder by strikehard gear. Its perfect for them
Been hunting PA Whitetails for 46 years. Hands down, this is the best rifle I’ve ever used for that purpose. And it drives tacks with everything I feed it. Federal Fusion is my preferred whitetail ammo. Just buy it. It’s a remarkable value in a fine bolt action rifle.
Fellow PA hunter here too. I was considering this rifle big time a few year ago then decided to go with the Ruger American Predator in .308 at the last minute for a few reasons. While I really like the Ruger for all types of shooting I still have a hole in my heart that the CZ needs to fill being I am an AK-47 collector and have a ton of surplus ammo on hand.
The Green Man same here alot of 7.62x39 stocked up I've been looking at this rifles as I live in PA and want to take up hunting Question for you guys about how far have you guys had to make shots on deer hear in PA? I know that's a pretty broad question but it seems like people say the shots on deer are usually relatively close like almost always way less then 200 yards
If you are hunting public land then your looking a 30-100 yards at the most. If your hunting public land it could be much more. I have a private spot where I am able to get out to 350 yards which isn't all that amazing in the scheme of things.
I have shot 3 deer and have never had to shoot over 60 yards. The CZ 527 is a great little rifle for walking up and down and then back up and down our lovely Pennsylvania mountains. Get one and enjoy. I bought mine to hunt ferrel pigs in Franklin County but have not seen one yet. :(.
This is a very helpful video! I watched it ~5 times before purchasing my 527. I can confirm that this is one incredible *light* rifle! Also, this is the fastest pointing rifle I have. Somehow completely naturally points on target with perfect sight alignment -- without trying! Interesting side-effect: an incredible wife acceptance factor! Completely unexpected. My wife admires the cleverness of lever-action, respects the 30-06 bolt action, tilts her head on the SKS -- however, this is the first one that she admired and found comfortable. Huge thanks for uploading the video! Very informative! Cheers from Canada!
If I can just say again how much I like your videos and the values it promotes: simplicity, honesty, frugality, sincere modesty. Such great reviews, and this is no exception! Thanks again, and I hope you and your family are staying healthy during these tougher times.
Shhhhh it's a secret 7.62x39 is superior in ballistics to 300blk at range for hunting Never got on the bandwagon and kept with 7.62x39 The 527 and the CMMG mutant are the most overlooked rifles due to the caliber. Both are very accurate and reliable.
NewEnglandLyle Tough decision, I really like Ruger too. They both would serve you well. The Ruger has a very well made synthetic stock while the CZ has a very beautiful walnut stock. I love the caliber.
I did a minor mod to my SKS last year, and it shoot's on target all the way out to 300 yards with the steel case ammo. It's better than anything I now have.
Thanks Zrus. I bought this rifle a couple years ago on your recommendation. Works great and is super nice high quality piece. Perfect companion rifle to an AK. I used an optics planet code you gave out at the time and got a reasonably priced Weaver 1-3x scope. Awesome combination.
Plymco USA right on man! Thanks for the support! I still have yet to put a scope on mine. I’ve been considering a low powered optic like you have there.
I bought one of these about 15 years ago. Although it has a full-length buttstock, the gun feels tiny when carrying. The weight feels more like a 22. You can carry it all day and not feel fatigue at all. The 7.62x39 is so close to the 30-30 in performance that you can practically call them equal so it's a great woods deer rifle. I load my own ammo with a 150 grain cast bullet to 2,070 ft/sec for deer hunting. I wouldn't sell it at any price.
I got one about 10-12 years ago, it's a BEAUTIFUL RIFLE. I like the rear peep you put on it. I also like the little mag carrier for the stock as well. The trigger is to DIE for, it can be adjusted in so many ways. There is a GREAT VIDEO on U-tube that explains it so well all the adjustments possible for it to your PREFERENCE. IT'S A VERY HANDY, LIGHT RECOILING CARBINE WITH THE TRIED AND TRUE MINI MAUSER ACTION.😉👍😁😂😂😂😂😂
I look at it strictly from a deer hunting perspective, and also ammunition cost perspective and that little rifle looks great. Plenty of power to kill a deer at 200 yards, and a lot of cheap ammo for it out there, not to mention hunting loads. I'd probably take of the iron sights, put a 1-4x scope on it, and stick with the lesser capacity magazines for hunting deer. Maybe even free float and glass bed the action.
I have one in .223 and love it. Super accurate and easy to carry. Only problem is the mags. They refuse to feed the last 2 rounds. The bolt just wont push them forward enough for the claw to grab them and feed them into the chamber
Thanks for a great review, I bought a CZ 455 LUX in .22 Mag. …. it was my first CZ NOW, I can not see myself buying a bolt gun that is not a CZ. Old school craftmanship and quality I thought was extinct and replaced with plastic and spray paint. This or any other CZ rifle will more the n likely be one of if not the nicest rifle you own. Took me 20 years to figure that out, save your time and buy a CZ.
CZ, Howa, and Ruger all have x39 bolt actions available. None of them have a rifle with both a threaded barrel and backup iron sights. It's one or the other. I'd love to have both options.
Got something similiar. Its a norinco jw 105 in 556 and shoots military ammo too. 55 grains and less only in @ 1-12 twist. Using tube style reddot sights zeroed at 25 and 75 yards. Abit close zero so im waiting for a nice day to do +3 inches at 100 yards for a better battle zero. Be perfect for deer out to 200 yards .
I've owned one for a few years and fits me like no other rifle. With an empty gun, if I set up a soda can at 10 yards, close my eyes and point the rifle when I open up my eyes sights are connected iand a hair away from the can. It has the best furniture for any gun I own and in my opinion is well above its $650 -$700 price tag.
All Steel. All Walnut . This rifle will last 3 lifetimes. VERY cheap to shoot. Pretty accurate with cheapass steelcase...Cheap to shoot and I don't have to reload for it. The action is built like a Swiss Watch.
Got the SR model because of your videos on this rifle. I have a Griffin Armament Revolution 9 in NFA jail for a few more months and they list the 527 on their website as a rifle you can run it on. The SR comes with no sights so I got Warne rings and a Burris Fullfield 2x-7x. I love this rifle.
Just picked one of these up in the pre-owned section of my local gun store..I couldn’t believe how lightweight it was…and that bolt moves like glass in glass.
Love that rifle. I saw one at the gun shop and held it for a while and I'm saving up my money to get one. Love your video. It sounds like an honest evaluation and I'm sure no one is paying you to say it.
I just traded a Zastava for a used one. Bolt runs like butter. Although the guy said he put some work into the gun. I don't know what all he did, other than a silver front bead site, an oversized ball bolt knob, and having it threaded for a suppressor.
I bought this rifle today, the new fibre optic front sight is awesome. Verry similar but bigger is the CZ 557 lux, a buddy of mine has it in 8mm Mauser, also a bless to shoot.
Love my CZ527 in 7.62X39. From the first time I saw it I knew I'd have one. These are great rifles. I don't know if controlled round feed is necessary on small caliber guns but it has it and they are really nice. You can feel the bolt pick the cartridge up at the magazine......very cool action. I've got a few other CZ 527's in .223 and 204 and love them all.
Great video, on a great firearm. I have the carbine in 7.62x39, and the Lux (also has the iron/open sights) in 223. It has a 24" barrel, I believe. Both are great guns. I also bought the NECG rear sight and a few different sized apertures. Haven't installed it yet. My question, are you still using the factory front sight? Or did you change it out? If you changed it, which height did you go with? Thanks.
when i first installed the NECG it was too tall, so my shots were hitting pretty high with the factory front. I ordered a front sight, (which i forgot what height), but it was a phone call to them that directed me to the proper height to buy.. later I unscrewed the peep from the NECG mount and filed down the threads until it screwed into the NECG rear sight far enough down, to allow me to use my factor front.
I had a little thought....what if you put a weaver adapter on the forward dovetail and put a red dot on it? Maybe a skeletonized riser so you could co-witness? It would make snap shots easy with the red dot and then if you needed to focus down you can move to the ghost rings. My initial thought was to use a light weight low power optic like the Vortex Crossfire II 2-7x32 but that adds another pound onto the gun. Not too bad as it's still around 7.5lbs loaded but if you wanted to keep the thing as handy as possible maybe the ghost ring and red dot combo is where it's at.
i put a peep sight on mine. both front and rear sights are adjustible now. you can get these big game sights that will fit the 19 degree bevel on the CZ at NewEngland CustiomGuns
CZ, the Kansas City Mauser. I don't have any larger calibers, but I shoot competitively with a CZ 455. I really enjoy that rifle, but the mags are higher than a cat's back. "Thumbs up" from this Kentucky boy.
I have CZ 557 243 carbine. I love it I will never replace it but might as well get another rifle but I’m sure it will still be my favourite hunting rifle 😅
Well that little carbine is without a doubt the next coolest firearm thing I've seen since the last coolest firearm thing(which for me was a cool little auto-loading black-composite .22, make of which I don't remember at the moment, you can allegedly get for about a hundred at Wal-mart depending on your demographics). I'll be looking for one of those some time this year! Nice video and thanks for letting me know about this one ; first time I've even heard of a cool little sporterized bolt-action hunting carbine in a mil-surp cal. ammo 7.62x39 what would be a great and inexpensive target and varmint-to-medium sized game.
I picked up one of these yesterday. Can't wait to try it! Also picked up another with a 26" heavy barrel in 6.5 Grendel which needs a scope: recommendations?
Look at the Hi-lux line. Intermediate quality scopes that punch way above their MSRP. I love my 527 in 7.62x39 but am going to a 2x scope for hunting with subsonics.
I've got a big calibre scout for hunting, but am after a smaller calibre for general purpose. Considering one of these in .223. It's leading the list so far.
CZ makes really really nice firearms, and usually for a decent price for what you get. I'll have to check that site out, because I use a 452 in 22lr, and would love a peep sight for it. That set trigger is pretty nice, and adjustable trigger too. Really nice. Roger is a good budget gun, but CZ is in a different league.
I added a 2-7x32 Vortex scope. My ancient old man eyes don't work well with open sights any more. That said, this rifle is one hell of a hunter. Deer, hogs, etc. I load my own hunting rounds. Very accurate.
Great review. I own this rifle in 7.62x39 with the NECG ghost peep. Mine loves Brown Bear 123gr. Glad I was able to find the youth version before they discontinued it. Solid rifle, love CZ.
You can get the cz with a threaded muzzle from the factory. You can also get a model without iron sights installed if you prefer a scoped rifle. However, I always thought cz included a set of rings with their rifles?
If they do, this is the one. I wouldn't call it bad, it can be a very good rifle if you get a good one or once you have worked through the issues, but problems are common and Google is your friend here.
Ehhh you don't think what? You don't think that I had a bunch of problems with mine, or that others have had the same problems and more? I eventually got most of the bugs worked out of it but for what the rifle costs, it should not have the issues it does and the accuracy is still a bit underwhelming.
Reminds me of my 1st bolt action rifle which was a Mosin Nagant. Had a hooded front iron sight. Still miss it! May be in market for this CZ system. Great Review!!!👍🏽
Rhubarb Pie the youth model is selling for $450 right now. It’s almost an inch shorter then the full size but a 20 dollar slip on limbsaver can fix that
For as simple as it is 5 rounds is plenty for a compact bolt action put a nice low power compact scope on it you got a little scout rifle on your hands
With a good placement this calibre took 5 deer so far, one huge whitetail buck. Most just over 100 yards, one to 200. Used an SKS with a scope and Hornady SST. All dropped on the spot or very close, this rifle would make things much more accurate to 300 yards.
Got the carbine version with the wood stock a couple of years ago. Like it just fine. One problem I had was that recoil knocked a chip out of the stock at the rear of the receiver and the rifle loosened up in the receiver. Upon inspecting the interior of the stock, I discovered this rifle has no recoil lug. So if you have one, you should probably have it solidly bedded or better, pillar bedded.
Accessories? 2 extra mags. Very nice sights. What else do you need? The rifle is a good as it gets. I wish they would chamber it for 6.5 Grendel. Then it would be perfect.
One of my favourites, too fan to shoot, 1st choice to take w me for new shooter to get him/her love shooting. Unfortnately no aftermarket mags except CZs that charges 45 for 5rd mag.
I went with the 6.5 Grendel & 5.56 versions and mid price Nikon scopes. But I will probably add this one to the collection as their iorn sighted brother. Thanks! I will check out your sponsors.
Loved the review mate! Picked one up and few months ago and never looked back. I'm also planning on getting the NECG Peep Sight for it aswell. Did you need to get a different front sight for it aswell to go with the peep sight? Or did you just leave the factory front site on? I can't find an answer to this anywhere.
I kept my original front sight on, but It was hitting too high, so I had to grind off a few threads from the rear sight to allow it to screw down further into the sight base.
Do you hunt with 7.62*39? I'm seriously thinking about getting this rifle in 6.5 grendel not as cheap to have fun with but a little better ballistics. I really like the way you set yours up with the aperture sight. The only thing I would change is a leather cheek piece instead of plastic. Thanks
Unfortunately, in my state we cannot hunt with rifle calibers. But with a quick read online, 7.62x39 is quite successful with midsize game and has taken plenty of deer in America. It’s also a more common hunting caliber over seas. And yes, I now have a beautiful leather mag holder on the back with a matching sling. Which I have a video on “steel rain provisions custom leather”
Another 527 owner here: the 527 is a very versatile, accurate, well made rifle. I have no doubt it will grow in popularity. Greetings from Phoenix, Arizona.
I agree it’s good with the steel case ammo I had a silhouette at 210 yards iron sites but with the Hornady red tips I was busting clays at 1:10 we’re on sites of course the clothes were sitting behind the hundred yard target up on the bank they weren’t flying through the air
honestly, it depends of your eyes. I am comfortable with irons out to almost 200 yards on a 15inch target. (man size) but for hunting precision, i prefer a scope for pin point accuracy.. thats your call right there.
I have the same model in 223. Did you have any issues chambering rounds from magazine? Seems like the spring is too stiff or something. Maybe the lips on the inside of the magazine where the round touches needs chamfering
Ive talked with you before about my wanting this rifle. Now with the new Ruger American Ranch, im torn. I agree hands down the CZ is nicer, but the Ruger will take Mini 30 mags, which while as pricey as the CZ mag, holds 20 rounds(and can be top fed). What are your thoughts?
KossoffFan more rounds on hand are always nice. The Ruger shoots very well, probably just as well as the CZ. But the CZ has iron sights, for me, that’s the deal maker. I’m ok with the 5+1 capacity. Combine that with a beautiful walnut stock and fully adjustable trigger with a set trigger, and a much nicer finish on the metal.. that’s what makes me happy about a gun. But if extra rounds and scope only is your thing, the Ruger will make you happy, no doubt.
I really hope these things don’t get too popular before I get one. They’ve been on my list for over two years now, but I haven’t seen one and had the money on hand at the same time yet. These things are pretty cherry 🍒! Shhhhhhh!
one tweak Id make to this gun after shooting a few hundred rounds through it is a modified bolt knob...its a bit too small for me to operate quickly and reliably.
Found a nice little specimen at Cabela’s and I’ll probably pick it up tomorrow if all goes well. If I spring for the peep sights should I also upgrade the front sigh as well?
no need to, I switched back to the factory front. Its much more fine and helps with pin point accuracy.. although it disappears into a dark target, but its a give and take.
thats the selling point of the Ruger Ranch over this CZ.. If I know Ruger, they will have a model with iron sights out soon enough.. Damn Ruger, always taking my money lol
