The final game of the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship came down to Czechia vs. Canada. Would Czechia defeat Canada for the second time in the tournament, or would Canada win back-to-back gold medals at the World Juniors?
I would like to thank all Canadian fans for the kind words I have seen in the comments, for the fact that you do not think about Czech team as something less but as a worthy opponent! Congratulations for the GOLD medal and cheers from Czechia! :) It was a great game.
@@MrNorberg That's just wrong. We aren't Americans. We don't default to jackass behavior. Czechia had an amazing team, it was anyone's game. Had they won it would be because they were the better team. That's it that's all.
@@HeyRoosty Nope, it's not wrong. It's the same for all countries and sports in general. The only difference is to what extence the different comments would have been between a win or loss for the country in question. Yes, Id say americans feel typically worse in most cases, including this, but I have seen how many more..., let's say, less nice/polite comments when Canada has lost a game, wether it's the final or not. It doesnt matter what country you are from, whenever you win there will always be more nice comments from the winning country cause it's always easier to be nice when you are happy yourself. Then there are people that are nice and polite towards people nearly always, but sadly it's not the majority, or at least not the majority that feel the need to comment, wether it's a positive or negative comment. Good day, Sir.
@@MrNorberg lets all agree that it is I would say a question of individual behavior - there will always be people who hate, but the ones who think positive will always be positive in both situations :) people tend to lean to stereotypes that some nations does this more, maybe they does IDK but in general there are great people everywhere all over the world, and lets leave haters aside
agreed, honestly just that last attempted save was was amazing in and of itself. he was a sliver from getting it and he did one hell of a stretch attempting to save it, a stretch like that is rare even in the NHL.
I’m Canadian and I’m super happy we won gold for the second time in a row, but seriously the Czechs deserve a lot of credit. They did AMAZING this year and it’s nice to see them win a medal. They beat us the the very beginning and were unbeaten until the gold medal game. Hope to play against them in the gold medal game again in the future! 🇨🇦🤝🇨🇿
finland ia proud of you this was also great year for finland 2022 mens olympic gold 2022 womens olympic bronze 2022 IIHF mens wc gold 2022 IIHF wjc silver
Fantastic effort from the Czech. All tournament long they were dominant, and fought till the very end. Hold your heads high, be proud of your accomplishments and all that you proved in this tournament. Fantastic team, great country and amazing fans. Gg, and best of luck next WJ’s in Sweden 🇨🇦🤝🇨🇿
Agreed! Czechia played as team more than anyone else in the tournament - Canada included. It could have just as easily been you guys in overtime. You had me worried AF. Much respect from Canada! 💪
Canada was just so dominant... Although the tournament just stinks now.. It truly doesn't feel the same without Team Russia. It's kind of a shame the young kids over there don't get a chance to play hockey, solely because of politics. None of the players, teams, coaches, have anything to do with what is going on, and It's always fun when they are at the tournament. Hopefully sooner or later we can see a full star studded Russian team back there to compete.
Overtime against Canada on Canadian ice is like climbing Mt. Everest. A Czechia win would've been their 'Miracle On Ice' story. Hats off to both teams. What an incredible tournament it was this year.
What a thrilling final! I was on Czechias side, but I couldn't believe that the Czechs scored 2 goals in under a minute. Anyways Congrats to Canada! Well played Czechs. From Finland🇫🇮
They played an amazing game. They scared us, it truly could have gone either way with how Canada got so tired at the end. I said this with about 5 minutes left: "If Czechia takes the lead in regulation, its over. If Canada takes it to overtime, its even.". Again, great game. The boys put on quite the show. 👏👏👏👏👏🤩
No idea how many Czechs/Czechians will see this but your team should be proud of themselves. They played amazing hockey. Suchanek should be heralded as a hero for the performance he put in especially after one of our players ran him over.
I am from czech republic, So thank you soo much 🤍 you played good as well. I am soo proud of our boys. 🤍 And you should be proud too. Canada was incredible 🤍
I think the true winners are the hockey fans. What a tournament this was. Really sad that our boys didn't win the gold cause they really deserved it, but so did team Canada. I'm sure that this generation of hockey players will bring much joy to the game. Congrats to team Canada and as for my Czech team: I'm proud of you and I don't think that any true hockey fan will think about this silver medal as a loss.
This was the best tournament for us in many many years! I'm so proud of our Czech team. We fought till the very last shot and showed the world the quality we have. Congrats to Canada for winning the gold and for hosting such an amazing tournament! All the best to everyone! :)
You can be very proud of your team, Frantisek. I'm sorry, it's heartbreaking to lose a final in overtime, it could have gone either way, of course. Best of luck next year.
The entire Czechia team played an unbelievable tournament. Nobody else connected *as a team* like they did - Canada included. I'm Canadian so I'm rooting Canada by default, but there's no team I would have preferred to lose to than Czechia. For what it's worth, there is a LOT of praise of Czechia's effort being shared between Canadians right now. We feel lucky to have pulled it off. Overtime is a coinflip.
There were some lean years for Czechia but it looks like the country is producing quality players in bunches again. Best thing ever for hockey. No one will ever forget the contribution that Jagr and Hasek made to the game.
Was at the tournament and can proudly say the crowd was rocking the whole time! Fantastic game and overall tournament by Canada, Czechia as well should be so proud. What an experience and what a team!
Czechia did so well and they made it an exciting game! I was cheering for Czechia, but hey 1st medal since 2005 gotta feel good. Greetings from Finland
Czechia deserves a massive amount of respect. They dug down deep and tied the score, late in the third. But Canada played extremely well and Guenther 'got it done'. All of Canada is proud of you!!
Huge props to Suchanek for staying in the game and battling hard throughout the game. Both teams played exceptionally well and should be proud of their accomplishments.
Czechia. I gotta give it you. We had to beat into the 3rd period and well. You came back and made us work for the gold. What a game. Also Tomas Suchanek you deserve a freaking extra medal. GUTSY performance after almost getting taken out of the game. If I where in Halifax tonight and seen you, I'd buy you a drink..
Absolutely amazing tournament by Czechia. You guys gave everyone all they could handle and then some, and it just boiled down to a few minutes in OT during the rematch. FANTASTIC tournament. Much respect from Canada.
As a fellow Canadian I feel heavy for Czech! What a quick last minute comeback only to come just shy of winning. Congrats Canada and well played Czech!
You guys played an amazing game. You scared us, it truly could have gone either way with how Canada got so tired at the end. I said this with about 5 minutes left: "If Czechia takes the lead in regulation, its over. If Canada takes it to overtime, its even.". Again, great game. The boys put on quite the show. 👏👏👏👏👏🤩
Ti distingovaní kanadští příznivci se vzmohli jen na větu: "Are you happy now?" I kámoš Kanaďan měl pro Čechy jen slova chvály. Tohle stříbro je potřeba náležitě oslavit. Docení ho až s léty. Kéžby dvacítka takhle vydržela hrát více let po sobě. Nádherný zážitek!!!
The Czech team and especially goalie played some fantastic hockey and were well-deserved silver medallists. They were close to taking gold and their heroics in making it through Sweden in the SF and into OT against Canada in the final will not be forgotten. I hope to see more great years of Czech hockey. I'm a Canadian with some Czech ancestry so like seeing Czechia doing well!
As Czech fan, it saddens me I couldn't keep my eyes up for the final third. I simply lost all hope after the second period and now I hear we were THIS CLOSE to winning. Huge congrats to Canada! You were a mammoth of an opponent and I'm so happy our boys were able to challenge you as much as they did. Ultimately, it didn't go our way, but what a game this was!
As a Canadian fan, I was having Toronto Maple Leafs flashbacks of choking at the last moments haha. Thankfully Team Canada isn't Toronto and they were able to keep up! Wild game, even just watching the highlights has me on the edge of my seat!
As a Canadian, I'm very proud to win at hockey but as a Canadian I'd also like to give respect to the Czechs for a fantastic performance throughout the tournament and for such a major accomplishment in taking home the silver. ;)
@@user-js7mc9kl1b Well it is always fun to play against Russia, it's a long and storied rivalry. But I understand why that wasn't possible given the war being waged by Putin. Hopefully the situation is a much better one next year.
Even though Canada had all the superstars it was the strong team play of Chechia that almost stole the game for them. Congrats to team Canada on winning the gold medal! Greetings from Finland!
celý zápas som vedel, že to ešte vyrovnáte. váš tým hral úžasne a bojovali až do konca. síce to nie je zlato, no získali ste striebro. celé Slovensko je na vás hrdé. 🥈🇨🇿🤝🇸🇰. pre mňa ste zlatí
LET'S GO CANADA, WE DID IT!! Gold medal number 20 for us! However, Czechia put up a great fight. They never gave up in any game and truly had a tournament to remember. Hats off to them
@@CaltaTomas Canada is the best hockey country in the world, IIHF are trying to make money you saw for yourself how many people were at the games even the pre tournements ones it just make sense for them but next year it's in sweden so that's in Europe.
A great game between both teams.this is hockey at it's best.I live in the United States and was rooting for Canada. Canada and the United States are great hockey rivalries Men and Women. Both teams in this game were great.
Hey Czechia. Man your guy's hockey future is exciting. It's good for the game when you guys are good. More countries that can compete with Canada is a good thing.
What a game. Havent watched hockey (of any sort, whether its NHL or Juniors) since 2015, but this tournament got me back into it. What an amazing display from our boys, and Czechia for absolutely making this game more intense than it needed to be. What a final, and congrats to both teams for amazing performances. Glad to see Canada stays flourishing in our beloved sport.
Yo, seriously...INSANE effort from Czechia here! I'm Canadian, and was playing poker in a local bar during this game. At 2-0, I announced that I wanted 2-2 instead of a Canadian blowout. Then I got the 2-2 that I asked for, and *immediately* started sh*tting myself. lol Overtime = anyone's game. It could have just easily been you guys. I'm happy that Canada pulled it off, but there's nobody in this tournament I would have rather lost to than Czechia. Czechia played as a TEAM more than anyone else, and deserved every part of their path into the finals. Jee-jee, dudes.
ot anyones game? no...give me regular 5on5 ot,tan we talk about anyones game...don`t get me wrong i do enjoy 3on3... in 5 min ot... you want continious ot,keep it as the real game..
What a game, I thought it was hart attack in the making!!! I don't know what it is but Canada vs Czechs or Slovakia always provides great games. This Czech team played their hearts out, what series this would have been if it was best of 7!!! Game 7 Overtime !!! 🇨🇦❤️🇨🇿
The Czechs were amazing, can't wait to see many of these young players in the NHL. Amazing goaltending by both keepers, but Suhanek coming back from that near injury to have a stellar game was truly impressive. Congrats on being the only team to beat Canada in the tournament and on the silver!
Lots of praise for our team in the comments, I have to return some of it :) Well deserved victory for Canada, our second goal was extremely lucky so I believe the gold medal went to the better team. But I'm glad we made it to the OT, at least it was worth watching the game until 3:30 AM of our time :)
What an electric game from both teams. Czechia had a lot of fast, aggressive, smart players, not to mention their goaltender had an incredible game, especially considering how much Canada outshot Czechia. Any team that makes it to OT in a big game like this more than deserves to be there in my eyes. Canada just played a little smarter in the OT and hammered it home.
Great game, great tournament. Congratulations Canada and kudos to Czechia for their strong play. These were the best two teams and rightfully deserves their gold and silver respectively.
The best tournament, simply the best with its substitutions. You would have invited Great Britain instead of us, the replacement of the level of Russia, right now, we will find out how interest in IIHF tournaments will fall.
Like I've said before in another video, 2023 WJC is damn insane, all teams are pretty equal strength but in the end one had to win. Czech hockey is great, stay strong dear brothers, much love from Canada.
@@xboxrules8472 Slovakia, Czechia, Finland, Sweden, Canada, and the US were all high quality teams this year. Usually it’s just Finland, Sweden, Canada and US. It’s just a fact that this year was more even. There will always be blowouts
The fact that no NHL team drafted Tomáš Suchánek is nuts, in 2021 NHL Central Scouting had him ranked #6 overall. He plays for Tri-City in the WHL a league where a goalie's stats cant be taken seriously because of a mismatch between teams and a very high amount of scoring. He's 19 so Im not sure if he still has to be drafted or whether a team can just sign him but if Im a team with some extra cap and a space in the AHL I'm signing this guy immediately to a entry level contract. Worst case scenario he doesnt work out, you loan him to a Czech team where he'll probably sign after the contract runs out and he ends up being a long tenured Goalie in one of the top Euro leagues but I was impressed with this guy the entire tournament and especially in this loss to Canada where he stayed on the ice despite being wiped out and held a Canadian team with absolute Future Superstars on it to only 3 goals this game and only 2 the first game of tournament. He led the entire tournament in Goals allowed average 1.38 and saves percentage .939, the only teams to score more than 1 goal against him were Canada & Sweden which were both 3-2 losses and his only losses with a 5-2 record.
Wow,, this was a game for the ages. Czechia played their hearts out and when the game was tied,, I thought they could have won a gold for the first time in 22 years. Congratulations team Canada for winning gold.
Huge congrats to Czechia for a game well played! As a Canadian, I wouldn't have been too disappointed had Czechia won instead. They were going for their first gold in over 20 years(!), while Canada was going for the first back-to-back gold in 10 years. Also, the Halifax fans were fantastic!
I got nothing but respect for the Czechs, hell of a game for you guys. Keep your heads up you played so well and deserve all the praise for how your team played.
I wouldn't have chosen any other team than Czech to play the gold medal game against. They were strong the entire tournament and played their hearts out and as a Canadian, that earned all of our respect. Good game and much love to our Czechoslovakian friends
Heave Away! Let's go Canada 🇨🇦. Great Job by Czechia tonight and the tourney in general. Y'all will get it some time in the next 3 years. Halifax and Moncton thank you for being great hosts and you could tell it was loud from just watching at home and i can only imagine how loud it was in person. Love from Saskatchewan. Cheers 🥂.
@@user-od4gd6bg9d Yeah, and they need the advantage of having the home ground, 3 years in a row. How they are allowed that and to have canadian refs in all their games amazes me.
@@rusport74 I understand that. Canada vs Russia is always my favourite game to watch. But calling it a "fake win" and saying we should "hide our eyes from shame" is a bit much. Remember, it's also for the safety of the Russian players. Canada has a very large Ukrainian population and all it would take is for one psychopath to out the Russians' lives in danger.
Bloody impressive showing by Czechia .. they almost scored the winning goal in the third and also in overtime. Fantastic job, Team Canada. I just loved the way the shot from the team bench shaked, rattled and rolled when the final goal was scored.
The Czech team should be extremely proud. Czechia played incredibly well, are highly skilled (That goaltending!!!), and a loss in OT is to have played within fingerprints of the Gold Medal. Congratulations, Czechia on a series very well played. With how well you battled, you should have immense pride. Even though I cheer for Canada, if Czechia had won this series, I would have been happy for both teams. See you on the ice again soon!
All I wanted was a match worthy of the finals. After all, even silver would taste bitter after a beating. Instead, I got a game that could have easily earned us gold. Congrats to Canada, this was an absolutely great tournament (I loved that we started and ended it together) and after all these years, even the silver is a balm to my soul.
@@MetalCharlo didn't seem like it for the vast majority of the game, looked like your team is quicker, faster, just a step above and we were scrambling to get out of danger. But the last 10 or so minutes guys found some energy in them and things started to happen. Imho it is a bit devastating to play so many matches in such a short period of time, they could've give all the 4 teams at least one more day off.
I was cheering for Canada, and I Dont know why but I felt sad for czech! Like the goalie and everyone were so sad! How do athletes cope with losing in big moments!!!
I was supporting the Czech team from the start. How can I not support the team that comes from the same country that makes my superb Skoda Karoq. Pity about the result.
First of all, guys, no only did the refs call a great game, what a call by the crew chief to start the game. Better than before a boxing match even!!! "k guys. Play tough, play fair, don't forget to enjoy huh?" *Drops puck* LEGENDARY 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 Czechia played an amazing game, they never gave up. I was feeling they were coming for us in those last 10 minute and I saw Canada getting sluggish. And lo and behold they turned it into a hockey game. 👌. Absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, they put it on the line; they did they're darnedest. Hockey is a beautiful game and this one in particular will go down as one of the great World Junior Finals. Edit: wasn't sure about the other words were with the ref at the start. Might have been "ok, here we go"
8:35 - 9:32 When Canada got pinned in their own zone here I had a bad feeling because you just know when that happens the puck often ends up in the net and next thing you know it's a tie game. The Czechs played one hell of a game and gave us all we could handle. Congrats to Canada and the Czechs on a great game.
Literally the most stressful game of hockey I've watched in ages. Was ready to celebrate with how good canada was playing and a minute later it's 2-2. Czechia played absolutely amazing though. They definitely should keep their heads held high!
Im Canadian and was super happy when we won. But the Czechs played incredible and almost clutched up. They would have definitely deserved the win. I love how they didnt get de-moralized and kept fighting to the end. I wish them all the best luck next year and i look forward to meeting on the ice again. Good game! 🇨🇦 🤝🇨🇿
