This is the first Irish song I ever heard. I didn’t understand Irish Gaelic when I first heard this song as a kid, but I found the lyrics online somewhere, sat my 12-year-old self down, and memorized this song phonetically. It’s nice to be able to sing along, even if I still don’t understand Irish. But I’m learning it! And reading all the Irish history books I can find, and listening to all the podcasts about Ireland I can find. I want to understand the country that gave my imagination so much to work with when I was a kid.

Though Clannad has one of the earlier recordings of the song (1976), and Altan popularized it more thereafter, Dulaman is a very old song from a time in Ireland's history when seaweed was extremely important to their culture. Dulaman is seaweed, but the song is basically talking about an argument between the two most important types of seaweed: dulaman gaelach, which was an important dyeing material, and dulaman maorach, which is an edible variety. In the song, a mother and girl are debating about who the daughter will marry, looking over at least two men that each represent one of the two seaweeds. At first they are looking at a gaelach, but then decide on a maorach because he is offering better gifts and dresses better and is younger than the other, which would have probably been the case as food was more important than dye. The girl's father, however is a collector of gaelach himself, and challenges the young man, questioning his intentions, denying the marriage proposal. However, the maorach declares that if he can't propose fairly, he will simply kidnap the girl and marry her anyway.

Mack, you are incorrect, there are two versions of the melody that come from the Irish folk song tradition. The first of these was first recorded by Clannad on their album Dúlamán in 1976. The second melody was first recorded by Altan on their album Island Angel. Celtic woman didn't even do their recording until 2007 after several others.
@Kaotiqua
@Kaotiqua 10 лет назад
And, it should be noted, the song was around in folk tradition WELL before Clannad recorded it. As for "They did it better"? well, they may have done it *sweeter* but it's not really meant to be a choral epic chant. It's a FOLK song. A work song. So as epic as Celtic Women or Altan might make it sound, it's a bit like "Drunken Sailor" as performed by the Tabernacle Choir. *lol* I MUCH prefer THIS version, although they get a bit fancy at the end bit. :D

Oisin O Lochlainn I've been trying to find various versions to see whom I like better. No offense to Celtic Woman, but its just way too extravagant, and the song parts are all broken up weird...its...just bad. She sings well, but the song isn't done well. This one I like the best so far, with Altan a second I think, so far.

Why not raise a celtic empire with scotland, ireland, south netherlands and northern belgium and wales. With Dublin as capital. And lets just focus on our beautiful culture and just let the rest of the world fight their wars.

Sorry, but it's one of the most stupid ideas I've ever heard. All those countries built their own culture and heritage even though they're all Celtic and I think they won't abandon it to become a part of "Celtic Empire".

This is Ireland, not the United Kingdom, Ireland is an independent country and has been for over 100 years after suffering 800 years of oppression at the hands of the British, how can people think that Ireland is part of the UK if it has been an independent country for over 100 years? I’ll never understand. The reason the vast majority of Ireland is now English speaking is due to the United Kingdom, people were harshly punished for speaking their native tongue many years ago

This is very old Irish folk song that was first recorded by Clannad in 1976 for their album ‘Dúlamán’ and then Altan and futher on Dónal Lunny and Coolfin, Celtic Woman is a group of people that love to further stereotype Ireland and their music is shite, cringeworthy mixing songs traditionally only sung in Irish in English, its insulting, but any there’s the answer to your question
