FLASHBACK - thanks Adam, for the nostalgic trip down memory lane - I was the editor on DARYL and we edited on location in Florida, then moved production to London for the Military Facility interiors - Some Trivia for you... we filmed the computer room in the belly of Epcot. The opening car/chopper chase was a reshoot that was shot in France while we edited at Pinewood Studios. There was only one surviving shot [done in Nth Carolina] in the final edit.
Hello Adrian, I am French so please excuse my English in advance. I can't tell you why, but this film captivated me from my first viewing. I must have seen it in 1990 for the first time. By some miracle this film fills me with an intense nostalgia. While reading the comments of this superb video I read that you were editor on this film, you are thus officially my new almost best friend :) I would even (no kidding) come close to asking you for your autograph. That being said, I just have a little question to ask you: do you know if the music of the film exists on vinyl? I've been looking for this potential vinyl for over 10 years. Whatever happens, my dear Adrian, I wish you a wonderful continuation and if by any chance you come to Montreal, let me know. Sincerely, Gary the Frenchman
My mom used to rent this movie for me when I was a kid. I watched it again for the first time in probably 25+ years. Time flies... thankful to have grown up close to that era.
That scene where Turtle walks in through the back door of the house without being noticed while everyone in the next room is having a conversation expressing their concerns about Daryl. Turtle listens in. And then a few minutes later when they have finished. Turtle goes back to the door he came in and closes it loudly to make it sound as though he had just walked in - not hearing a thing about their conversation. And he acts along doing his Turtle thing to remove any suspicion he heard anything.
I love how you guys did videos of visiting film locations of some of my favorite 80s family films that I watched as a kid such as D.A.R.Y.L and Flight of the Navigator I wish you guys would please do a RU-vid video of the filming locations of WarGames and Short Circuit
What I love about these Filming Location videos you do is that you can really tell how much these old movies meant to you, and how excited you were to be in their locations. (I first came across your channel because I searched for Flight of the Navigator). I think a lot of your fans would like to see maybe a Livestream where you simply talk about the films you love, maybe with a guest or two. Maybe The Carpetbagger or even TheTimTracker. Like a podcast style show in a room talking about what these movies meant to you guys. You could even Green Screen it, and show specific scenes behind you, and since it's technically a review I think it's fair use. And you'd be surprised how easy it is to green screen things you're watching on a monitor in front of you. Just an idea. Keep up the great work. I love digging through your old content, you really know how to live.
I used to have it on VHS recorded off the TV. I think my mother overlooked it in the theater bc she would often take me to these kinds of movies. I didn't see it until a year or so later on the VCR. I need to find a DVD on Amazon or somewhere, its such an underrated movie.
As long as I remember, I have wanted to go to a location of a favorite movie and relive it. This video takes care of the top item on my Bucket List. Thank you, Adam! The movie D.A.R.Y.L. was fantastic and so was this video!
I went to Orlando a couple of years ago and found a couple of the places in this great sci fi family film! I am 50 so remember it well! The school Daryl went to was Kaley Elementary School as it is actually called and the park where the baseball game was played is Delaney Park not too far away from the school! As for the house I could never find it! So many lakes around Orlando. It seems that the address is a guarded secret!!
I've been browsing. Richardson family home, daryl's foster parents, located in Euclyd Street, still near Delaney Park, Orlando. The location of the mountains in this film in North Carolina, precisely at the location named Brevard. Part of shooting also took in place named Dillsboro, NC. Hopefully useful :D
Fascinating. Thanks for doing this guys. Over here in the UK we do similar location hunts for the classic episodes of Doctor Who. This is one of my favourite 80s movies! :)
Man, this has made my day! Thanks so much for making this film. I adored this movie as a kid and still watch it at least once a year. Hard to believe that D.A.R.Y.L. is actually in his 40s now, but then again, I guess I'm not 6 anymore either. Time flies! I have to see these locations myself at some point. Makes me very nostalgic. May I ask, what city were the locations in, specifically the baseball field and the homes? I just have to visit. Keep up the good work man! I love your stuff!
I was one of the stand-ins for both Barret and Danny. I rode one of the bicycles, floated in the lake as DARYL and walked in front of the school as a student. The lake where I was floating in the river was so cold, I was wearing a wetsuit underneath the clothing. There were two divers with me under the water because there were alligators in that lake. The location of the car chase where they drove up the freeway on ramp; the Sheriff told me local kids used to stuff paper in the coin toss box to collect the quarters.. One of the stuntmen I briefly met, who flipped the police car on the freeway during the car chase, was killed a week later in a helicopter crash during the filming of the TV series "Airwolf".
Thank you for sharing the location of my most favorite and memorable childhood film, which I can still memorize the meaning of the acronym: Data Analyzing Robot Youth Lifeform after 35 long years when I was still 11 years old at the 5th grade back in 1985. I feel nostalgic when I got to watch the film once again earlier and relive my childhood experience. 😊
Like Flight of the Navigator, had this film recorded by my Dad on a VHS along with Beverly Hills Cop II & Real Genius. Also have the song "Somewhere I belong" as a MP3 copy. Took my a sort while to find. Found it somewhere on youTube a few years back.
This is fun. Now sure how I'm just finding this but this movie was filmed in my house... I have fond memories of filming and hanging out in between scenes in my room playing atari with daryl and turtle.
Oh awesome so glad you found this location this was one of my favorite childhood movies as a kid. I use to watch this everyday when I was a kid and I still love the movie as an adult.
WOWWW THIS WAS 1 AWSOME VIDEO , TAKING ME WAY BACK TO MY CHILDHOOD IN 85 WATCHING D.A.R.Y.L. MY FAVE MOVIE THEN AND STILL IS IN 2020 THANKS SOOO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO WHERE SOME OF THE SHOOTS TOOK PLACE 👍👍👍
I never knew it bombed this bad at the box office. As a kid it was one of my all time favourite movies. And 16 million in 1985 was a lot of money! I wonder where the money went into. Actors didn't earn as much back then, the set pieces are all pretty much standard pieces. There are some composite shots with the Blackbird SR71 and the car chase sequence probably was expensive and the set with the MRI and Daryl's room were costly I can assume. Wow... I think it did get it's money back with the VHS and DVD releases, I bought it on DVD as soon as it came out and still own it on DVD.
Maybe the military scenes? When the Richardson's showed up to that base and found out what DARYL was maybe? I had a poster of a stealth bomber as a kid. I thought that Blackbird scene was the coolest thing in the world!! What boy at the time didn't want to be DARYL?
I never knew it bombed either. I remember watching a very poor VHS copy about 100 times, each time it getting a little bit worse. D.A.R.Y.L. was immediately followed on the tape by The Neverending Story.
Forgot to mention they actually watched the filming of both the lake scene and the baseball scenes. They claimed you could see them in the background of one of the scenes but we never found them.
Just to say I knew all about this film back when I was a kid but never seen it. (I’m 45) it was just one of them that wasn’t cooler than navigator etc. today I watched for the first time and it’s splashes of 80s is just so beautiful to see. And Adam cutting excerpts from the film, never knew he had the skill in him 😂 great video
@adamthewoo Great job tracking down the locations. I just watched this movie last week. You probably know that Michael McKean played Lenny on Laverne & Shirley. Also, the actor who plays Turtle's Mom is Colleen Camp, my 2nd Cousin. Thumbs Up on this video!
great great video! This was one of my favourite movies as a kid. Great to see all the locations as they are now. Your effort and attention to detail is appreciated.
This was a nice surprise to find. One of my favorite 80s films. I still watch at about once a year or so. Are all these locations in Orlando? By the way, the computer room is actually the old Epcot Computer Central. I was never in the room myself. But I have been under it. Heh…heh…heh.
This is a great childhood flash back. I lived in that neighborhood when they made the movie. It was very entertaining as a child to watch the film be made. My brother played baseball in that field.
I remember very well this film when I had 9 or 10 years old. When I heard to (D.A.R.Y.L.) Oliver tell to her mother "Kiss my ass", I thought. "If I talk to my mom like that, It could be my death sentence". I loved this film. He was a great kid actor.
Man that's a nostalgic rush! I was 13 when I saw it in 1986 (we always used to lack a year behind in Europe) and that was the moment I was starting to learn assembler on the C64, because I had reached the limits of it's limited basic. And assembler was hard but this movie really motivated me to go on. I never build a D.A.R.Y.L. or a hot sex bomb like Kelly LeBrock, though :D
Unless I'm mistaken, the "extra" you refer to at 8:49 who "makes a really spectacular face", is not an extra at all, but the character of Daryl's foster mom herself...
Okay you got a like out of me for the scenes you have covered. But I am a bit disenchanted by the lack of coverage beyond the Winter Park / College Park area. My grandmother lived in Dona Vista (Umatilla) when the movie was filmed and we were very familiar with the scene where he was driving away, Before the airport, on US 19 north of Eustis. Also the lake he crashed down into was practically my grandmother's backyard! I think you should follow up with an encore of this vid. Just saying!
Great job finding all the spots Adam! I've been looking for some of these for awhile, I'm going to keep searching, lots of clues in your video to help I think. Amazing how some things have never changed and some are completely different. So Parenthood locations is next I hope? =)
HERE ITALY....questo bellissimo film uscì quando avevo 6 anni. Ogni tanto lo guardo ancora come tanti anni fa. Anche qui in italia è considerato un cult. Vedere con i propri occhi la location delle riprese è davvero una emozione unica che spero di provare. this beautiful movie camed out when I was 6 years old. Sometimes I still look it like many years ago. Even here in Italy it is considered a cult. Seeing the location of the shoot with your own eyes is truly a unique emotion that I hope to try.
Yeah, at 8:55 there is Colleen with her mouth open and right behind her is an Extra in the white striped shirt with a goofy look. These days she is mainly a movie producer but also acts part time. She played the mother in the movie Valley Girl too. Last time I saw Colleen was in 2006 when I was in LA. I might be seeing her in the near future though.
Lol, the movie is being played on TV at the moment & writing this in the ad break! I was an '80s kid but never saw this movie growing up, actually this is the first time. In the opening scenes of the mountains with the helicopter chase, the scenery was ( & I hope it still is) beautiful. I would have liked to have seen it shown now in this vid, in fact it's the reason I clicked on it in the first place. Is that the North Carolina filming? Shortly after, the small county town they go to is also very charming. So much nicer than a generic, ugly, dirty, over-populated city.
This is really well done, it should be on a special edition or something-if there was one for D.A.R.Y.L... Great job Mr.Woo! It was nostalgic yet really funny at times. I never noticed the extra pulling that messed up face before! Really excellent.
First of all, you added this one on one of my kids birthdays, and that's pretty awesome. But as I recall DARYL, which I haven't seen again since probably 1985, I knew it had been filmed in my home towns, but I never realized that my family's business was actually in the scene where he gets on the jet!!! The Kissimmee Airport Terminal Building housed Marathon which was owned by my grandfather and then later by my parents, brother and I, until we moved to the new building and later sold to Sign
I wonder what happened to that building on the right in the ATM shot. Whether the building where GAP now is was built in front of that old building or it was torn down. Hmmm
Adam The Woo, I wanted to see who did filming locations for the 1985 movie D.A.R.Y.L. And it was only you that come up from 11 years ago on RU-vid. Was all the scenes shown by you in Florida? If so what town? I’d like to see the military base he was kept.
***** I recently watched Cocoon and I have to say I find it disgusting. I don't think I would have liked it as a kid. But maybe I got confused and thought his name was David because of that.
George Louis Really? I also watched it as a child and I really liked it lol. Well I mostly like stuff from the 80's, it was one of the best decades for films.
Adam I was wondering how many times you watch the movie you're about to do the filming locations for. Maybe one day do a quick video about how you piece together all the info. Great job here as always.
Adam, Thanks for this one. I loved watching D.A.R.Y.L. when I was a kid. What about the mountain locations at the beginning of the movie, I believe you may have neglected that part, and I do not think that was in Florida.
It would have been nice if you featured the building that was under construction at the time of filming. Otherwise a very nice look back at a classic if underrated 80s film.
I thought I was the only one that enjoyed this Movie..I have it on VHS.....another one I enjoyed was " Stanley and Iris " little did I realized it was also good.....I knew I had a Nack for movies...Robert Deniro also likes that movie
Hey Adam the Woo, I live in Bradenton Florida, and about 30 minutes from me Summer Rental and Cocoon were filmed. I know so many filming locations for both. Been to both movie filming locations so many times. So,if your ever Interested. Just Reply.
This is an AMAZING video! But at 8:49 you refer to "an extra in the movie that makes a really spectacular face". That's not an extra, it's Colleen Camp playing Elaine Fox, Turtle's mom.
