"Brown Sugar" (1995) "Voodoo" (2000) "Black Messiah (2014) Coming in 2056: D'Angelo & The Super Vanguard Philharmonic release the 5-hour funk/rock/r&b/blues opera to end all operas. I hope I'm alive when it comes out.
Voodoo is one of my ALL TIME favorite albums in my collection. TRULY a Masterpiece can't believe I've been playing it all these years and it still sounds like the 1st time whenever I play it. CAN NOT wait for the next album from D'Angelo and The Soulquarians. Gotta love PHILLY SOUL from every era.
I just saw D'angelo in Montreal this past Thursday. He was phenomenal and so giving. Merci Michael for giving us so much- you are a true musical angel walking this earth...
Bought this album when is first came out and have been listening to it on a consistent basis throughout the years. Now, that should tell you something.
I was fortunate enough to start listening to D'Angelo about a year ago. I started with Black Messiah. I had that album running non-stop in my car for months. Still am not tired of it. Then I started listening to Voodoo. Same thing happened. I can't wait for another D'Angelo album. He has such a unique voice in the music industry right now. Here's hoping that it doesn't take another 15 years for the next album.
I heard Brown Sugar first, skipped Voodoo and went to Black Messiah. Always was liked D'Angelo, but when I listened to Voodoo? When I listened to Voodoo?! Literal tears from my eyes because I've never experienced something so beautiful. Hands down my favorite artist and album.
Best R&B/Soul album of the decade. A true masterpiece. Artists 20 years from now will be looking back to study Voodoo's greatness because it was ahead of our time.
Insightful. I wish they would have extended this - they could have made an interesting documentary from the material. I can't wait until D'Angelo drops his next album. I hope it'll be as good as Voodoo.
D'Angelo is gift 4rm God. I hope he can bless us with another album. I thnk he know how much his music affects our lives. I pray that we can get an album in 2010 because the world needs it.
The person who made the comment about D'angelo being overhyped must be jealous. So if he is overrated and overhyped why does his concerts sell out quickly. Stop hating.
Wow this album goes #1 and sells millions of copies which would be certified platinum prior to his "Brown Sugar" album which also went platinum When it comes to Michael D'Angelo Archer aka D'Angelo he just puts his jazzy roots in his music with a touch of neo soul🎶🎵🎤🎼🎹🎶💿
Shout out to D'Angelo being out of the USA and rocking the LAKERS jersey that's wassup! Ol Skool Kobe #8 Oh and you know you're in in the presence of a Prince fan when you see anything that says NPG on it! Rock On. LOL
It's a thrill to see a surprise guest, such as Eric Clapton turning up at the recording/mixing of Voodoo. Who would have thought?! Anyone can elaborate on how this came together at that time?
Also, Gary Harris (RIP) his first A&R and who also helped get him the Virgin Voodoo deal, helped him get into Clapton's rehab spot down in the Caribbean. That's probably where they might have first crossed paths.
SIMPLY PUT THIS DUDE IS A GENUIS....COME ON HE HAD CLAPTON HEAD BOBBIN, GAVE CHRIS ROCK THE STINK FACE AND HAD RICK RUBIN STATING "THATS THE SHIT". NAME ME ONE ARTIST NOW WHO CAN PROVOKE THAT RESPONSE.
it's recording engineer & record producer Russell Elevado. He's the reason why Voodoo sounds so great (he only uses analog gear and he must have great ears too!) and he's worked with Badu,Common,The Roots,Nikka Costa,Keziah Jones,Zap Mama...and also Al Green,Roberta Flack... Sound wise,he is THE shit !
There won't be another album like this for a very long time. Even D himself will find it difficult to surpass the ingenuity he had on Voodoo. To me, really, Voodoo is the very definition of music itself. And it should be no less considered on par with great soul/funk legends of 60's and 70's.
I pray James River will have the effort, passion and soulfulness of Voodoo. I've listened to Voodoo more times than any other record - and I'm still receiving new vibes from it. It will be hard to come close to its predecessor but if the soul is to the bone, the creativity will shine through. SR
THE BEST ALBUM IN MY HOUSE!!! AND I'VE Listening to music a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time. Great GR8 post. (I'd not seen this insight..thanks)
the new D'Angelo album is going to be a lot more funkadellic, prince experimental with rock elements. Harder but none the less musically interesting. Not so much the "baby making love" music. I guess it' s fair to say: he matured.
this is one of my favorite albums. I brought the EP essential cut on wax. I wanted to spin Spanish joint. Before you could just load it up in serato. Had to have the wax.
June 24, "The Best So Far" has some old, a few new songs on it and is a preliminary to his new album "James River", or whatever his goin' to name it......
EC being there sheds some light on his true character. Honestly I always thought of him as an overrated, overhyped guitarists who got a beautiful voice and plays the same solos time and time again - no real surprises. But here he proves he is looking for the unknown, new, fresh stuff - at least back in 1999.
Eric's a huge D'Angelo supporter; if you recall them VH1 jams back in the day, he plays on "Use Me" with D. i believe Eric Clapton was also one who helped D'Angelo get into rehab some years after Voodoo.
"Yoda's" already exponentially talented musically, but my baby-brother has got "big-brass-balls" Look around and listen to his little teaching session and speculate "where is he ?
Spanish joint and on some days Left & Right (cos of the rapping) are the only songs i do not absolutely love from this album. Mind you, the live version of Left & Right is the shit.
