Y-you mean wisdom right? Or are you making a joke. "No no you see, I make an intelligence investigation check. Because I need to use my intelligence to put things together" "That's wisdom. In D&D wisdom represents intuition, rather than crystallised knowledge. The people who made D&D were high and decided to give the knowledge bit to intelligence for some godforsaken reason. Just pretend their meanings are switched if it helps" "Oh interesting. Anyway, what species is this plant? I'm very wise about such things so..."

@@sploofmcsterra4786 intelligence is your knowledge/memory, logical thinking, and reasoning, wisdom is your insight, perceptiveness and how attuned to the world you are. Insight, in this case, means your pure feelings; how you feel on something. Its your gut feeling on a situation in isolation, whereas if you are putting information together (logical thinking and reasoning) that is intelligence. To give a computer analogy, wisdom is your inputs- your mice, your microphone, camera, and intelligence is your cpu and hard drive. Wisdom in dnd has nothing to do with the real world definition and the real world definition is more accurately represented by proficency bonus. From the DMG: "A character with a high Wisdom but low Intelligence is aware of the surroundings but is bad at interpreting what things mean. The character might spot that one section of a wall is clean and dusty compared to the others, but he or she wouldn’t necessarily make the deduction that a secret door is there. In contrast, a character with high Intelligence and low Wisdom is probably oblivious but clever. The character might not spot the clean section of wall but, if asked about it, could immediately deduce why it’s clean. Wisdom checks allow characters to perceive what is around them (the wall is clean here), while Intelligence checks answer why things are that way (there’s probably a secret door)."

I mean it really depend from what the games is about, there is no wrong answer just different game design. In a combat heavy game, where investigation and social encounter are sparse, splitting perception into three skills could make those skills bad investment, reuniting the skills under one solve that problem, but in a court intrigue it might be the opposite having a skill capable of doing so much will make it mandatory and overpowered. Perception isn't even a skill in other systems, it is a base attribute like strength or charisma. This doesn't just apply to perception in a court intrigue do you really need different skill for weapons, maybe just one is enough. And using persuasion for nearly everything might be overpowered so maybe you could split it between persuading with emotion, and convincing with logics. Maybe getting people to like you might even be a different skill too.

I think a case COULD be made for using acrobatics (not just dex, but acrobatics proficiency specifically) for jumping. Like, an alternate rule could be cobbled together for it, not that its necessarily easier or a gimmie. Maybe make them make a higher DC check or make more checks, translate it to less feat traveled than strength does, something like that.
@J_BiggityBar
@J_BiggityBar Год назад
@@SolarFlairIsBestPony My issue with that is in 5E Strength is already considered weaker than Dexterity. Dex can be used for AC and Initiative. Dex Saves are by far the most common saving throw. I still remember the day I learned about perception the hard way. So we were in the basement of this mansion that we were running as a tutorial stage because most of us (including myself) were pretty new to dnd. Another player was trying to open the tombs in this basement, breaks all the fingers on one hand. I suggest that she uses the other hand to try again, breaks all of those fingers too. Now its my turn and I see a hallway that nobody has explored yet and instead of going to help that other player, I think, "ha yeah, its lootin' time baby" and I take one step into this hallway and fall into a 10 foot pit of spikes, land at the bottom with 1 remaining health point, and because it was a first time run our dm gave us all health potions to make sure we last the next few rounds without dying. So I spent the next like 10 rounds in this pit trying not to die until the rest of the party came to rescue me. Karma. Is. A. Bitch. Then after we got me out of the pit and we went on to explore the rest of the level I take the opportunity to go lootin' once again, trying to pick open a locked and possibly cursed footlocker. The two ghouls hiding in the room didn't like that... The moral is do your perception checks when neither you nor the character can tell what your DM is planning to blindside you with. Typically when you're in a space and can't tell whats around you.

Characters with high charisma seem more daring, more willing to take risky actions...even when they actually aren't. A big strong guy is clearly physically able to punch your face off, but you can't be sure he'd actually be brave or stupid enough to do it just because you aren't doing what he asked you to do. That takes hutzpah! It takes bravado! It takes a certain je-ne-sais-quoi! In short, it takes...charisma!
@SolarFlairIsBestPony
@SolarFlairIsBestPony Год назад
The basic books themselves make a case for helping out here. I think it might be the DMG, but I forget. Intimidation is literally the example given, with strength being the substitute. Basically, if it makes sense, the DM might very well allow it. Just, like, be aware of how you're intimidating. Looming, lifting, et cetera, pretty muscle boy stuff. But threats? Ehhh... maybe, but pretty 'charisma'-y. Another example I bet you could make a case for is Wisdom for various intelligence skills, depending on what you want to know. If you just want to know if something is safe or dangerous Wisdom is pretty good at interpreting the meaning of symbols and phrasing even without deep knowledge.

Other common skills are stealth if you're trying to surprise someone, athletics if you're busting down a door, or diplomacy if it's a social encounter that requires initiative

Jesus, I remember a player like that. Only instead of perception, it was intimidation. Seemed to think that the intimidation check was a Swiss army ability. This has either gotten his cover blown during a covert operation (because the person screamed out loud the moment he was out of sight), him targeted for being a threat to civilians, or just him getting straight clocked in the face for _thinking_ he could intimidate someone who's strong enough to not give a shit.

The last one I feel could be somewhat justified. I have a hard time explaining (or even understanding) the difference between Perception and Investigation. I've played a lot of 4e and PF and in both systems Perception was the catch-all skill for "Do I see/notice something?" So having two different skills for "Do I see something in general?" (Perception) vs "Do I see something when I'm actively looking through an area/container?" (Investigation) feels kind of weird and arbitrary.

Funny enough. That IS how perception works in Pathfinder 2e. Spotting signs of lying is a perception based action, investigating a room is perception based, initiative can use any skill with justification as to why, but most basic is perception for spotting an enemy before hand

This was really funny, the insight and perception situation was spot on. Now the perception vs investigation is a weird one, rules wise, like for example, according to RAW when you want to look for traps, you roll perception, once you foubd it you can roll investigation to see if you can figure out: what the trap does, what triggers it, and how to disarm/disable it. Unless any of these would be obivious, like every one knows how a pit trap works, it's a hole. Truth be told, investigation is an odd skill with way to specific uses, so I don't blame people for homevrewing it into "perception w/ scrutiny", but it can leave to some weird misunderstandings

Uh... Detect if the Wizard sense something." Wizard: "I haven't even rolled Arcana yet" DM: "OK, roll insight" Fighter: "Ah, well, I see where we went wrong, I want to see if it here is any magical traps" DM: "OK, good! That is actually a perception check. Roll for it" Fighter: "32" DM: "You see strange glyphs on the door." Fighter: "what do they mean?" DM: "You can use either an arcana check or a history check" Fighter: "Well, I try to perceive the meaning of the words..." DM' "...What? That is still a His..." Fighter: "look I don't know how to finish this bit and my break is almost done." DM: "Ok, let's roll with it."

99% of the time, I treat perception as a passive roll and only really use it as such. If you're actively looking, you it would be investigate. When it comes to active perceptions, I do this if a character is actively doing the thing it would require when the passive would be checked against. So things like if a character is guarding, then they would roll their perception to see if they see something at night. I'd also allow them to roll if they gain disadvantage such as darkvision in darkness, to accomodate them being extra vigilant.
