I once made rogue-wizard, with necromancy specialization. I basically had wizard class mostly for touch spells, and i had homebrew gloves that let me enchant them upon rest with any of known by me touch spells at cost of +1 level spellslot. That allowed me for quite a variation for methods to use touch spells, but my favorite use for them was to stealthily cast either chill or vampiric touch, taking my target down without him making a sound or leaving evidence, like blood for example

@@d1oftwins You try to pretend to be neutral, but you obviously aren't. There are also several things wrongs. First the DM didn't look at the dice, just announced that it's a twenty. Second, You have to roll against something in this case the other player, a nat 20 isn't a wish spell. Third The barbarian never got his death saving rolls. And lastly, a 'poison' most likely a basic poison since she just started, only does 1d4 damage (which she also never rolled) and he is a at worst a level 1 barbarian hill dwarf with 19 HP. This is a bad DM who totally abused the game to kill someone he didnt like for a girl. If she tried this, she would be stuck fighting close range as a magic user (with a sword?) against a slightly wounded barbarian.

@Simon Theunissen I have and it is my favourite. But I couldn't have come up a deep involved back story on my first time out of the gate. Hell, even now I sometimes prefer to have a less complex background and fill things once I have a better feel for how the character is going after interaction with the group. There's no point trying to play the strong, silent type when the rest of the group start relying on you to do all the talking.

Yeah, in the skit, she was a new character and really just wanted to get started. I put a LOT of thought into my first character, but that's because I had a lot of time to do so while searching Roll20 for a good group in my time zone. If you're sitting down with a couple of friends and really just wanna try out D&D to see if it's something for you, I almost recommend skipping character generation entirely. Just ready a bunch of pregens, with all the items, spells and stats already noted down, possibly also a few notes on personality and backstory open for interpretation, let your player pick one, allow a few alterations and get started. The Starter Set has some excellent pregens and so does the official D&D homepage.
@LoreReloaded
@LoreReloaded 5 лет назад
@@oOPPHOo I think that's a bad idea to a degree.. I would say trying to fill out a back story to the mi-nute detail isn't necessary but to take what you said.. Do a Pregen but have a concept. When I have a new player.. I ask them what they like in science fiction.. Who would you want to play with? Again, 'greg' (cause that's what I am calling him ;P ) was way to over zealous but not imposingly so. If she's that new, the DM should have done a one off with just her.. I don't know.. She came to while the samurai was getting ready to *_execute his sworn enemy._* The ranger tried to yell him down, my pyromancer tried to plead him down, and his enemy was willing and ready to accept defeat. Typically didn't roll 1's on it that often though. But still. Quite cursed. And I used it with the original D&D and 2nd edition, where there's more variety in whether you need to roll low or high. Saving throws and skill checks are low rolls, attacks are high rolls. So, naturally if you have a biased die you'd think it'd do one or the other consistently. But no, of course not. I don't get the people complaining about too much backstory, he doesn't even once talk about any kind of backstory. Here is what the barbarian actually says and how much time it takes him : His name, class, and some brag - 10 Seconds His stats - 4 Seconds "Your stats are good for a sorcerer " - 4 Seconds "Make a backstory" - 6 Seconds "Your background determines details like what equipment fits you" - 9 Seconds "Could you please give a rat's arse about this game we're trying to play?" - 11 seconds So if the joke, as many people read it, is meant to be that he's a blathery overzealous RPer, the video doesn't make a good job of it. As a DM myself, I have to acknowledge new players may be into video games or fantasy fiction, but they may not have done much character acting. It's cool to create an edgelord warlock with a dark past right out the gate and give them a detailed history, but it can feel awkward and embarrassing to then have to *act* like an edgelord warlock. I prefer to start new players at level one with a pre-generated character that fits their taste and interest because their story develops organically from there. They can spend a session or two learning the base mechanics, and I always give them the option to make a new character if they show an interest in sticking around (that way they have a better idea of how their choices impact their character, rather than scaring them off with a deluge of information they won't remember) or fleshing out the backstory of their pre-gen. The burden rests on me to weave interesting things into the story for them to get excited for, and on the veteran players to show them how to adopt the persona of their character. Doing it this way eases them from the perspective of, "I am this person, and this is who I must be," to, "I **AM** this person, and my choices impact my life and the lives of those around me." I wouldn't even sit down and do stat rolls with a new player: I'd hand them my folder of two dozen or so 1st level templates (standard array) ranging from the effective to the silly to the, "This is Arya Stark from Game of Thrones, isn't it?" People fall in love *playing* D&D or *watching* people play D&D, not stressing over choices that could impede their character several months down the road.

I get that this was mostly for laughs, but... It seems to me that the DM is trying to make things as simple as possible for the noob while Hillblight was trying to show them the proper way. Both were trying to maximize the experience, but I'm more ticked off at the DM than I am Hillblight because the DM, for reasons unknown, assumes the noob won't want to or can't handle the full scope of making a detailed character. It's better to take them along the journey of making the character and see which parts of character making they're interested in, then if they start to show signs of disinterest or confusion, help them out or skip the process entirely. And if they just want to jump into the game, then simply give them a premade. Not only that, but the DM then, out of spite, railroads Hillblight's experience. Also, rolling a nat 20 would guaranteed a success in the noob getting the poison down Hillblights throat, but it wouldn't have guaranteed death.

@ArchetypeLuna
@ArchetypeLuna 5 лет назад
In the current edition, a first level Barbarian with 6 Con would have 10 starting hp (12 + con mod which is -2). Then if you are going old school, which is what it looks like they are doing (considering rolling 3d6 in order), they may be rolling HP at first level, in which case, said Barbarian could have really low HP. Either way, a critical hit from poison has a good chance of killing someone. The cheapest poison in 5E is Assassin's Blood which deals 1d12 damage, average 6.5, meaning on a crit, doubling the dice, it would deal 2d12 average 13 damage. Very possible that the damage would have been an instant kill at the time. Also to be fair, the barbarian was kind of being a jerk. There's also the fact that this is a comedy skit and is not meant to be taken seriously.
@ArchetypeLuna

@UCOXlju7bcS-FyiTKYPRzOMg It's more of suddenly forcing them to drink a bottle without them knowing what is in the bottle. They may just swallow on reflex. I don't think there is a clear ruling on that so the DM can just improvise. Plus if this is 5E, then it looks like there are a number of house rules as they are rolling 3d6 in order when the standard rolling method for 5E is roll 4d6 drop the lowest and allocate however you wish. The saving throw is a con save so I think they are going under the assumption he fails because 6 con. Also, technically possible she rolls 20 or more damage. They probably skipped the damage rolls for expediency. Technically, the highest amount of gold you can start out with is 200 gp if you have a class that can roll 5d4 x10 gp; also Xanathar's Guide to Everything has additional tables that can get you more gold at character generation.

@@nolin132 That's true in 5E. Remember, that they could also be playing an older edition, such as 2E (possibly implied by how they are rolling 3d6 in order for stats). In 2E, you picked your multiclass classes at first level and split the exp you obtain evenly among them.

Great DMing 101: Make sure to marginalize and discourage any player trying to engage with your story. Also a nat 20 should totally allow your players to kill each other ten seconds into your first session. Brilliant DMing. Top shelf.

Hilarious. For those wondering what the rules would say; 1) not an attack, so critical success isn't a thing* 2) this would be a contested check, so Greg the Drama Queen can attempt to stop the halfling from feeding him poison. 3) since these are starting items it's unlikely to be some super rare and extremely valuable poison, so Greg should be allowed to constitution saving throw so his body can attempt to resist the poinson. 4) again, starting items, so assuming he fails the saving throw it's likely he'd only get the "poisoned" status effect (disadvantage on attack rolls and skill checks) and maybe some minor damage that wouldn't kill a barbarian. Of course, pissing of your DM is grounds for having all those rules thrown out and simply being smote by some long forgotten power. Even then, I'd suggest taking the offending player aside and talk to them first. Then you can always have the ground open up, demons appear, and lighting strike. * When you make an attack roll (melee, ranged, and spell) a 20 on the dice is always a success and you get to roll double the amount of dice for your damage.

@@evanhuizenga8626 This is something that I feel is getting lost on the community. The New player wasn't 100% comfortable yet so DM was being kinda handwavy and skimming over details, while the Barb couldn't read the room and kept questioning the DM instead of just rolling with it. More subtle jokes being that the poison probably outright killed him because "his constitution is like 6", and that he says he'd "rather be playing with Dave" before getting stuck with that sheet.
@evanhuizenga8626
@evanhuizenga8626 5 лет назад
@@VoltageXXII Okay, but my question is, why would you skim over details and be hand-wavy with a new player, of all players? This should be the demographic that DMs are the LEAST hand-wavy with. The goal of this session was to teach the new player how the game works, was it not??? How does ignoring rules and discouraging actual role-playing help to teach a new player the rules, or how to role-play?
