Oh yeah I totally agree about in-person being better. Back when I was in college we'd just use spare dice and a grid board and that alone made it more engaging compared to an virtual board.

I'm running a custom system based on an indie video game series I'm a fan of and something I've been doing is tracking a ton of random side plotlines and what groups or npcs are doing while the players are busy with their own jobs. The world is a sorta post apocalypse/cyberpunk-esque place, and the players are basically mercenaries, so whenever they do a job for certain groups I mark down that they have more or less of an association with said group depending on how the mission goes. A certain npc who's going to be the first major "bossfight" has his own note page for what he's doing and how far he is to becoming said boss, who's main gimmick is that he's going to copy the abilities or tactics of every single person or organization that the players as a group have harmed, this is manually tracked and is going to be the first big sign that every single action has consequences.
