I will show you how easy it is to revamp your garden or small outdoor space with pea shingle. Pea shingle looks great and is very easy to do all by yourself.
Great job Sabrina !!! It’s my first doing the garden and I was a little nervous about how to lay the gravel down! But you made it so simple !!!! Thanks
Good diy project, I am doing a small patch in my back garden today. Just a small tip perhaps using garden pegs or staples will help holding weed fabric well in place for longer.
I was going to make the same comment. 30 pegs will cost you less than £5 so it is worth using them to stop the matting form moving. Other than that, good demo.
This was really helpful thank you! I’ve ordered some weed fibre and pebbles from B&Q. I want to start laying them this week, once I’ve got the weeds out.
Very nice I will be doing my low maintenance garden this winter. Just to say this is not pea shingle, pea shingle is about 10mm stones. But the way you have done it is better because cats just love pea shingle. I have had a tonne bag outside my house for a couple of months now just ready to get on with it. I have 2-4 centimetre size stones. Thanks for video.
And I would add that a heavier 'weed membrane' or 'landscape fabric' does a better job. I see articles on line that state that landscape fabric doesn't work. I have two long paths at both sides of my house...like yours but mine have gardens on either side, and I have a sitting area at the back surrounded by invasive vinca. The side paths are covered in 'pea shingle' that in North American we call river stone and only when too much organic matter falls from trees onto the paths, do the occasional weeds grow in there. One minute maintenance per year! lol I used the lighter weight landscape fabric in the area at the back and with time some strong weeds/vinca pushed through it. I raked the stones to one side in sections, and lay down the thicker landscape fabric. Again, little weeds did not push through but occasionally grew on top of it between the stones when too much organic matter landed in it. We love it! And it makes the garden look so English!
Your garden is very beautiful and I did stone this year as well, and I have to thank you for the demo on weeds as they grow so quick. Lynn, USA Subscriber :-)
I did this a few years ago. The problem is, it does take long before the (light coloured) stones look dirty (and mossy if it's in shade). I had to take the lot back up again, bag it and take it to the tip - a bit of a pain. If I have to use it nowadays (usually lawn borders where I only want the odd shrub here and there) - I use black slate aggregate which comes in large pieces rather than small chippings.
Beautiful. Quick question - what work you have to do to prep the ground? Dig up 1-2 in? How do you ensure the plot is balance/even? How about if in the future you want to plant some plants/flowers 2-3 ft apart? Thank you.
Hi Sabrina. Thanks for this. Looking at other videos, they seem to dig down 4-6 inches (10-16cm), then above the weed layer material, use sand and/or bigger stones before then adding the pea gravel/shingles. I would imagine that they are going to such trouble to avoid weeds and make it last longer and not subside. I am wondering how your drive has lasted in the years since?
Thanks for this fab video! Can I ask did that membrane stop the weeds after all this time? Also would you happen to have the link to it as I have so many weeds I know nothing about membranes 🙈 You made it look so easy thank you!! Xx
This is exactly what I want to do. I just had a new deck to replace the rotted one. The backyard is very small. I want to do what u did on the left side but on my right is a larger area. I am wondering if I need to make a walkway somehow? I think the gravel looks very nice and it's little maintenance. I'm just wondering if I need to do something extra on the right where the area is a bit larger? Thanks
Sabrina Grant: Sister: You are forward-looking. I enjoyed this DIY project. This is just the thing I want to do with the similar area of the yard to the side of my house: A long rectangular strip, so to make a walk-through area to the back. I want to cut costs, especially regarding concrete paving and I was looking for a cheap way to do this. Exertion is no objective, since hard work is akin to a payoff, more so in this sense. Questions: Did you do any digging/excavation prior to laying down the stones? Is the drainage adequate? Do you have French drains with the perforated pipe and sock underneath? Is this walkable, to serve as a non-soggy footpath?
Thank you sabrina, what do you need to keep these in place looking nice like that? Over time I mean. Also what is better premium bark or these for front garden ?
Thank you! You made it look so easy. My husband and I will be doing this very soon. I always thought that the stones came only in huge bags. Where do you get the smaller bags that you used?
No not really, you must apply the weedkiller first and a decent membrane down...I've moved house now and will be planning to do the same in my new front garden...
I already have a pebble base like you have done on top of a weed mat but it looks so sterile. I want to put some gardensoil on top of it and plant my many different plants in the dirt. I intend to put a hardwood sleeper at the edge to hold the soil in. Will the plants grow in the dirt with the weed mat base or do I I have to cut holes in the weed mat before planting them thank you
hi looks great ive done a simular thing. how would you set them solid as I have some inside steps and dont want them loose and going everywhere? thanks karl
Hi Sabrina, Very helpful video. I have one question. I have grass in my front garden, so do I need to take them off, or I can just use the weedkiller, and then weed membrane? Many thanks.
Hi just wondering how you calculated how much of the materials you needed, it says to calculate the square footage however it is a border I’m doing around my grass and have not the first clue😂xxx
beautifully done...one question...I would like to plant some plants on garden with pea shingles. Can I do it considering a weed spray that I will be using.
You'd have to wait a bit for the weed killer to wash out (every weed killer I have used dies out after 7 days and the weeds start growing again 😡 😂 ...but to be safe maybe wait two weeks to a month after using), though to plant you would have to cut holes in the weed guard (cut a cross + instead of a hole, so you have 4 flaps to fold upward), then after you have done that just cover the bottom back up with the guard slightly overlapping the bottom of the plant (like the wall in this vid) and push the stones to cover around the bottom of the plant.
Hi Sabrina, my garden is 30ft long, I would like to pebbled half of the garden, do you think it's possible to put a table and chairs on top of the pebbles and be able to enjoy outdoor dining ? thanks
Georgia Bery hey! Yes you should definitely be able to have chairs and a table on the pebbles. You may have to move the stones around a bit so the table doesn't wobble. Good luck with your project. X
Kez Rashid hey, I did this over 3 years ago so I’m sorry I can’t remember...but you can google the cost of all the products from the Wicks website or I’ve recently done this again at my new place and I bought a ton of stones from a builders merchant for around £65
Sabrina Grant 1 second ago Hey sorry I've not been on here in a while, not sure about the grass... you may need to lay a thicker membrane or try lying down an old carpet first.
