used the stick i made with the help of this video to hike over Kearsarge Pass (15 mile rd trip) and Mt. Whitney (22 mile rd trip) over the last month- the rubber tips wear out, but at 4 for $3 i carry an extra- not only am i extremely happy with this stick and its strength and versatility vs a trekking pole, other people on the trail stopped me to ask about my stick and some were considering switching back. I'm putting links to this video in mine, This video saved me a bunch of money and trouble. I use a heavy broomstick, while my much smaller lady friend uses an aluminum broom handle- the plastic screw tip on it works great as is. The paracord wrap is the key, it is the difference between getting a blister or not and is very comfortable.

Very nice. It's an easy to make walking stick, but it has neat, finished look. I would have thought to make use of a wood handle, but that hollow rod with the threaded end offers a few more options. Really cool.

Like Jblazin says, go with the large dowel that's a tight fit, but more because it will make it stronger. And you might try using a little scotch tape to hold the loop still when first wrapping the paracord, it won't keep falling off while you wrap it and it won't get in the way either. Nice job for a stick on a budget, good work.

Human predators (especially in midle east and US, where are the mechanical and heavy millitary guns distributed in similar degree) are better reppeled by gun, or a squad of colegues with guns. Other thinks you may add to/inside your stick: - colapsible slingshot. In nature, your munition for that (rocks) is anywhere. If you want to go nasty in urban area, you may use steel haired ring attachement for stabilisation and add inside a handfull of small arrows even. Like four, knitting needle shaped arrows may suffice for a start, and if you made them with backhooks and coppy a way to attach a fishing line to them, you may use it pretty much for fishing, and/or small game hunting. With MUUUCH better chance of success than when trowing a spear on a rabbit, squirrel, or a bird. - If you consider small game, you may add some wiring there for easier way to make snare-traps. - When dealing with single dangerous animal you do not want to injure - a dog lets say, or when in indoor situation with hostile and armed human oponent, you may even consider use of few meters of steel-rope. It is as effective per flawless use/hit and as quiet as garotte, but with much safer distance added. Therefore may be use thru a shelf in a storage, or from higher position than the target walks - higher floor, scaffolding, etc. Also, may be used as ad-hoc climbing utility for scaling from lower floors to safer/ground level, or a way how to attach your steel-rope witouth anchor/tip on the end of rope to a (up to 2 meters) higher position. Also may be used as a base for picking tree-fruit, like apples. - Definitley add some filtering straw, few of purification tabletes, at least 2 ways how to start a fire and some kind of aluminium pack. Water is priority, you´ll have to solve tens of days before hunger will strike you and when you want to have a way to cook something, you will have to have something, that will fitt in your stick and may be used as surogate pot for direct cooking. And aluminium/covered bag from a camper-meal, wich is considered to withstand the heat anyway (when it may be baken ower the flame) is only possibility it comes to my mind. Some big piece of plastiq. May be used as basic material for a hut roof, for condensating watter out of digged hole from ground, like makeshift poncho, etc, etc. Black bag may be ussefull too, when you travel in winter, or snow covered area, you may stuff the black bag with snow and let doo the sun its work with liquifying it. It will need some purification, and/or boiling afterwards (of course not in plastiq bag), but will save some time and fuel for you. If you are in hotter area, you may use the black bag idea for makeshift hot shower before bedtime. - Try to add enough of thermo-foil to insulate yourself from the ground, even when not in forested or urbanized area, where more possibilities for insulation may be found - branches, grass, leafs, ruggs, palletes, etc. Thermofoil (when the piece is big enough and you have some ducktape) may be also used for makeshift thermoholding "cloathing", or with a TON of ducktape for a makeshift mocaseen/shoes. - If adding first aid stuff to your stick, do not forget, that for most broken bones in arms and leggs, you may use your staff parts with some bandage to fixate the injury. I mean, for others you may easilly find other stick, but when YOU are the injured, you will probably not be in a state to walk around, looking for a better stick. AND in areas like desert, steppe or inside a cave, you will not have anything better around in a MILES. - Consider adding inside (or as a custombuild handle) some tiny monocular (tele)scope. 1) - it may help you to set a fire in sunny area quicker than a magnifier and 2) - keep you informed about your closest "distant" area. I mean - it is better to keep your situational awareness as high as possible in any survival scenario, especially, when you have only a stick/spear to defend yourself. - You have a nice throwing javelin. If flexible enough, you may drill a hole in a bottom area (other end than the one with a blade). When needed, you may use your paracord as a loop thru there for some throw-help. I am thinking kinda surrogate altaltl here. - When you want to try some big game too, or when you need yourself to protect in forested area from predators (animals or humans), you may use a knife (even the blade of your javelin) to cut and clean some wood to make a bow, for wich you may use your paracord instead of string. Also, you may add some scalpel blades and superglue, for easiest way to make letal enough arrows. The superglue (if not have toxic materials in it) may be used as makeshift (but fast as a hell) laceration wound closener. Sorry for my english, i am not native speaker and it is 23:45 here, when i am writing this text down... :D

Great video. Love the walking stick.

Great walking stick, only thing I'd do different is get a dowel that fits snuggly inside the broom handle to minimize sound. You don't want to make that rattling noise in a survival situation...
@truegrit131
@truegrit131 10 лет назад
Thanks, I did think about that but I also live in bear country so I opted to have a little noise maker..
@jacobs9257
@jacobs9257 10 лет назад
That's understandable and it really is a good idea, I might have to make one now. Also, if you wanted to hollow the dowel, you could use it as a dart gun and the darts could rest inside it until you needed them as well.
@truegrit131
@truegrit131 10 лет назад
That is a great idea... I like it. I might have to add that..

If you do, you should make a video showing it, testing it, and maybe explaining how you did it so the video isn't short.

@@truegrit131 I had to. everything has it's own essence and my opinion doesn't define truths, that's how I define my likes and dislikes. simplicity allied to effectiveness is needed on this subject, and this stick is the one. ( "far north bushcraft", he's got the best bed and bench of all, and "survivesmart" has the best tripwire alarm of all) I like your "straight to the point" way of thinking. hope you end good when the second coming..ehem...shtf arrives. that by the way, maybe come sooner than expected, have you seen the last front cover of the magazine that usually predicts all financial collapses, "The economist"? just a black background and the number 2019 on it. not to mention the rate of escalation in severe climate, big quakes/volcanoes, animal mass deaths/global crop losses, during the past couple of years. it won't take another couple years to be serious enough for everyone to start panicking.

truegrit131 $3 for 4 rubber tips at hardware store, tested with my full pack i love it. Added an eye hook for my gravity water filter and a screw stud for a camera on top. The best Thing about the paracord is that piece running inside the wrap makes a bump that fits the hand perfectly! Even made a smaller one for the lady she's very happy as well

The correct name for a cap on the end of a walking stick is a ferrule.

Good job on the walking stick but not a fan of the Sog spirit . If you are doing this yourself I would get a different spear head and for the record I own a sog spirit 2,
