First one in the shop. Very nice unit, un-modified. Really enjoyed the repair. Very nice built amp. Demo features a Les Paul guitar! Sorry I did not show the details of the repair. I have been very busy, time is a rarity.
This was my first amp…1957 GA40 that my dad bought at the same time he bought a lefty LPC wired like an ES5 (custom job from Gibson). He gave me the GA40 and it got stolen after a gig. But it had the best clean tone of any amp I’ve ever played…with a remote wedge foot switch for tremolo!
Sounds great. I must say as a guitar player for many many years, I’ve built and played dozens and dozens of fenders and Marshall’s, but some of these old Gibsons have a magic to them that can’t be duplicated. I just cloned a Gibson Skylark and it might be the best sounding amp I’ve ever played through the date. They knew what they were doing at Gibson back in the day for sure.
Definitely sound difference between the LP and Tele.......BUT I love the Tele.........another great episode playing by Tony and repair by Terry ! ! ! That LP amp sounds great also !
Thanks for all the great info. I have a question. I'm in the process of designing an amp from "scratch". I managed to get the preamp all working as well as the 6l6 but the preamp isn't connected to the 6l6 and I'm still lacking an output transformer. How do I determine how many volts AC should be coming out of my preamp and into the 6l6?
I’ve got a Gibson Maestro GA45 with different input resistors and a separate bass and treble circuit. Everything else is the same but I can’t figure why they did the treble and bass separate? I haven’t found out why they made this as a separate mode. Can you speculate on why they would have done this? And why the different input resistors? It’s a beast….a ton of sustain and sounds like no other amp I have ever owned. One problem with it is they have a bunch of caps on the backside of the board. I need to get in there and get them all on the front side. It’s a rats nest to work on. A very quiet amp though. It must be the 5879 preamp tubes that really gives its flavor. Please chime in on my first questions if you have a moment or idea. The schematic isn’t too hard to find if anyone has insight. You can really gain it up by bridge if the channels.
What fuse does it use? I am working on an GA-40 that is smoking with no sound. Wondering if I have a bad PT. Im an amateur and appreciate your informative posts.
Terry I have a ‘55 GA-20 that needs the original Jensen speaker re-coned. Can you recommend who can do this? You might recall this is an era amp where there is a choke mounted on the speaker. Thanks
Tony has never sounded better and I think this guitar has a lot to do with it. I was waiting for him to rip into some Jimmy Page licks lol crank it up loud and it will sing
@@stevencancel1727Ok.. my brother inlaw Had one back in the 1980s I put new capacitors in p/s And other sections Tuned up the tremolo As well worked good after that also I put some screen shielding on the inside of the upper back door. When my hand would get near the back door it would home a little show the screen shielding kept the amp more quiet
